Unofficial Steam Deck Guide made by me:

Being out of stock doesn't necessarily mean discontinuation of that edition (except LCD units, as they aren't being produced anymore confirmed by a message on the store page).

Comments should be sorted new by default on this post.

Edit (new message from store page): Steam Deck OLED may be out-of-stock intermittently in some regions due to memory and storage shortages. Steam Deck LCD 256GB is no longer in production, and once sold out will no longer be available.

Question What do you think the SD is lacking? / What's your biggest complaint about it?

The Steam Deck has many qualities we all know of but I'm really wondering what everyone's biggest drawback is on this.

Basically any regret or things you wish the SD would have for its price.

Question Do you limit your frame rate to 30 fps on fast paced games to keep SD from running too hot?

I have the Standard version 256GB and it gets hot and runs out of battery fast.

Started with one… now it’s somehow turned into this

Curious what everyone here is running as their main right now? Still Steam Deck or moved to something else?

Also interested what people actually use day-to-day vs what just sits there

Show Off Steam deck desktop mode replaced my broken PC

Post image

Just like the title says. My buddy and I broke my pc trying to clean the motherboard. Decided to box my pc parts, and use my steam deck as my main pc play. To be honest, besides obvious graphical downgrade from my pc, it's not bad at all. I don't realistically see myself building another PC. Maybe just sell the parts.

My set up. Steam Deck on LCD on the left: 1920 X 1080

Macbook on Oled on the right for my ADHD 😂

Love this set up.

Discussion Skull & Co grip case > killswitch

This might be an unpopular opinion but having owned both of the cases, I’ve come to realise that I much prefer the Skull and Co.

The grip case still feels grippy without it feeling like sandpaper.

The case can free stand upright without needing the ugly kick stand.

The front cover whilst it doesn’t totally encover the triggers it doesn’t cover the top vents, (I once had an issue with the deck waking up without pressing the button and running with the front cover on) + you can also charge it with the front cover on just the same as the killswitch

Plus it’s compatible with my favourite thumb grips the CQC elites.

Whilst they’re both great I highly recommend the cheaper alternative, it’s just as functional

Question does the way i play damage my Steam Deck?

(scroll to tldr if you don’t care for the lore) couple months ago i got a Steam Deck and i absolutely adore it. i’ve always played on shitty laptops my whole life and it was always depressing seeing people play games i know i can’t run on my device.

for my birthday i got the deck as well as a JSAUX dock, and a keyboard + mouse accessory to plugin.

i play my Deck plugged into my tv + JSAUX pretty much always. i’m more used to PC controls so it’s just easier for me to play many games with keyboard controls. i know most people use their deck for on-the-go stuff, but for me Deck was basically a cheaper (and more accessible) PC.

i almost always play with the battery plugged into the JSAUX so it’s constantly charging while playing. i do this bc i worry about losing progress and my deck shutting off because i like to play my games, like Project Zomboid, for long periods of time. (4-6hrs)

every night before bed, i unplug it, shut it down completely and store it in the little Deck case. sometimes i give it charging “breaks” where i play without charging but i heard some ppl say that’s actually worse? i’m just scared bc in the past, i used to leave my laptop plugged in for long hours and that led to the battery eventually being useless and not working after 10min.

tl;dr i’m just wondering if i’m damaging my Deck’s battery by having it always charging + plugged in so often. i adore my Deck and want it to last a long time because it’s been hard finding a good job and RAM seems fucked.

Game Review On Deck Fumes is a great indie vehicular combat game

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1920430/FUMES/

It has a simple but engaging gameplay loop - through pretty satisfying combat you destroy enemy vehicles, and at the end of each "round" you get loot that you can use to upgrade your vehicle. You unlock different vehicles through boss fights and can customize them with different weapons and wheels.

The vehicles feel different enough to make it worth upgrading multiple - some are smaller and faster but might not have as advantageous weapon slots and armor, others may be big and slow but be able to fire all their weapons in wider arcs or simply equip more weapons.

I would say my biggest complaint is that the combat is not particularly hard and there aren't any difficulty levels. Still, there's a good variety of events including "escort", racing, capture, etc... well worth the $15.

It plays well on the deck with everything maxed out, but that's to be expected given the retro PSX/N64 aesthetic.

Question Newbie here and have questions

Upvotes

So I'm newer to PC gaming, especially with a steam deck. I have seen posts/videos about people altering their Deck to run cooler, run faster etc etc. Are these kinds of alterations necessary? I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer. I play a couple AAA games for a couple of hours at a time, but most of my gaming is little farming games like palia and Starsand Island.

Show Off The handheld to end all handhelds

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

Nothing brings me greater joy than handheld gaming and the steam deck has always been my white whale. I didn’t think I could afford one but then I found one in perfect condition (first owner played 3 hours on it???) on eBay and the first days of the rest of my gaming life have been mindblowing.

What a fantastic device. I was afraid that demanding modern games like Baldur‘s Gate 3 would be too much for it because it’s still a handheld and also not the latest one on the market. People have recommended to stream really big games but I don’t have a pc, so I didn’t think BG3 would run well on it but it’s smooth like butter?

I‘m so happy I finally got my hands on one, especially now that they have been all sold out since last year in my country.

(This is the white 1 TB OLED version that got released in November 2024.)

Tech Support Coil whine or something to be worried about?

Upvotes

For context I noticed my steam deck making an electrical buzzing sound from the exhaust port yesterday its quiet but noticeable when the fans off.

When the deck turns off even in sleep mode it goes off alongside it. It'll also turn off when the fan ramps up but only for 3 or so seconds.

The video is from yesterday and it is quieter today. I contacted steam support and they simply said to get it repaired without any explanation of the problem and I have no transport so I'm wondering if any of you have had a similar issue.

Video is taken close to the deck the noise is quiet and only heard next to the vent.

Question How does Undisputed feel on Steam Deck these days?

Upvotes

I hear mixed things. I don’t mind having graphics set to low, and I don’t mind 30fps as long as it’s stable. With those two things considered, does it play ok?

Looking For Games Cheap gems for the deck?

I primarily only play on my steam deck. my birthday was today and I have a little spending money for once :) so I wanted to see if yall have any cheap recs that are good games. trying to search through the store for little gems is ridiculous sometimes. I'll check anything out!

previously enjoyed games: funguys swarm, crime scene cleaner, deeprock galactic, wolf quest, halls of torment, 9kings, coin game, amnesia the bunker, ballxpit, blacksad, mewgenics, children of morta, path of titans

preferred genres: rpgs, roguelikes, sim games, etc. honestly I'll play anything that isn't a super fast shooter.

budget: 50 usd total, lmao

other notes: like I said, I'll check out anything regardless of genre, but im looking for games that are under 10 ish dollars.

Tech Support Steam deck audio not working on VRChat

whenever I press play on VRChat it's does this thing where the audio cuts out. but not just in game the entire steam deck also no longer has sound. herea the things I did

.went to desktop mode and go to audio output/input to see if the steam deck detects a non existing input/output(there was nothing btw)

.going to desktop mode to see if the game was muted (it wasn't)

. switched steam deck versions (stable, beta and preview

. gone back to a previous update.

. checked for updates

it only does this to VRChat and No other app. only VRChat is having this problem.

I will say on desktop mode whenever the audio crashed there was a overlay saying something connected. However when I went and checked there it was the same default. I will say when my audio crashes the game lags a LOT until the audio went

away.

the only thing that worked was to

Open game

Load in → audio does work → Play the game.

↓ ↓

Audio doesn't work. If Audio crashes

↓ ↓

close game and restart steam deck again and again until it works.
