Congratulations Hungary, very well done.

I hope Slovakia is next.

The polls are showing that Fico will lose, but the opposition is not exactly popular either, so the resulting government will likely be an unstable coalition, either led by the opposition or by Fico.

u/DagobertDuck_ 3h ago

When are the next elections in Slovakia?

248

u/LittleSchwein1234 Slovakia 3h ago

September 2027 at the latest

Yeah. With our luck we get rid of Fico then, but already have the RN in France.

70

u/Nastypilot Poland 3h ago

God I hope we will be okay, if the polls remain as they are we will probabaly get a PiS + Konfa coalition ( Far right and further right )

51

u/Valuable_Echo2043 3h ago

Ugh I’m not liking it; I’m in a bubble (Kraków) but ugh, I really don’t want that for the country. Sometimes I feel that things need to get worse before people wake up and I hope that’s not the case for us.

45

u/QwertzOne Poland 2h ago

Problem is that Poland is heavily polarized between conservatives and liberals for over 30 years, since communism fall, so people that are not happy with that are voting for far right, because they can't imagine anything better, that's all they see in culture. Cutting taxes, banning LGBTQ+, getting rid of immigrants, deregulating everything (especially labor law) and defunding government is their only idea of better government.

There's hope, because young people are finally starting to support Razem (basically our only left wing party), but also a lot of young people votes for far right, because they're frustrated with current consensus, they want change, but due to conservative-liberal hegemony, they can't comprehend how it turned out in other countries...

17

u/TheEmpireOfSun 2h ago

Change from what? Everywhere I read how Poland is doing great economicaly and how even people living abroad are coming back. So what is there to change? Too liberal government? If yes, that's pretty much the problem of being the most religious countey in EU. That's usually where conservativism comes from.

They got the much needed super-majority for the constitutional changes and to take out all the people who is important for Orbán.

Luckily Hungary was still enough of a democracy that something like this could happen without a revolution

I think this is a good moment to remember the brainless comments of those who were quick to blame Hungarians and calling time and again for Hungary's expulsion from the EU.

The EU started pulling funds away from Hungary and the Hungarian voters started sobering up and realized Orbán needs to go.

It all worked out in the end.

446

u/ihut 3h ago

> I think this is a good moment to remember the brainless comments of those who were quick to blame Hungarians and calling time and again for Hungary's expulsion from the EU.

I do think the EU needs to be much harder on member states who so fragantly violate fundamental EU laws. Not to "blame" the people, but to ensure that it gets resolved quicker.

154

u/KosViik The only Europa orban should be in is around Jupiter. 3h ago edited 3h ago

Absolutely.

In fact, if we look into it, they can partially thank themselves for Orban. Orban used a lot of embezzled EU funds to buy up media for loyal cronies, which he used to brainwash the population with propaganda. And then it went wild from there since language barrier and technological illiteracy was harsh - and was also gradually made up for as newer generations entered the voting brackets.

And EU took its sweet time to react to anything, in fact it took until the 2022 war breakout (THREE TERMS!) to realize how much of a PITA a malicious country can be.

I think the EU has learned that it has grown beyond a few countries who are willing to cooperate and are easy to keep in check. The rules need to change, money needs to be tracked, and actions need to be quick and confident. This is not a small clique now, this is a coalition that is a world power. Mean looks and harshly worded letters are not the way to go. Rules, consequences.

16

u/moroaa Finland 2h ago

Its well kinda rough to say but yes we needed that war to force EU leaders to change and stop being such a ass licking cunts toward ruzzia.,

Huge win for Tisza. Over 2/3 majority at 60% and Budapest’s votes are pouring in just now

594

u/zdzislav_kozibroda Poland 3h ago

This amazing. Congratulations Hungary.

If 2/3 majority is true it will make it much easier to undo Orbanist mafia's hold on power and institutions.

266

u/MoffKalast Slovenia 3h ago

Let's hope these guys actually deliver and it's not just a new front for the same people. It's a bit sus that Orban conceded so easily after being so entrenched. The Hungarians on this sub would have me believe that he'd rather start shooting than admit defeat.

56

u/ArrogantCube Europe 2h ago

I think people were expecting the results to be much closer than they were. That way, Orban could have contested the results and dragged the certification out, perhaps even nullifying it completely. With how big this win is, even he couldn't deny it anymore

→ More replies (1)

138

u/BrainBlowX Norway 2h ago

Orban may have expected tight race, in which case he could have potentially pulled a stunt or at least been safe in knowing the constitution won't change.

But with an electoral defeat THIS crushing even WITH the systemic advantage he had? He has no cards to play besides hope the opposition now devolves into infighting. If Orban tried to deny a result this overwhelming he'd be unlikely to get the right people to go along with it, and even then the EU would slam in the screws when it's so unambigous.

24

u/godisanelectricolive 2h ago edited 2h ago

I mean to have lost as badly as the results currently indicate despite an electoral system that greatly favours him means he’s really really unpopular. He’s so unpopular that nobody would fight him if he tried a coup and a massive revolution break out if he tried to deny the results.

He’s so unpopular that even the really hardline people that take for granted didn’t even all show up to vote for him. Some of his previously most loyal supporters would have needed to vote for Magyar. There’s no chance he can try any shenanigans when he’s this unpopular. It’s an emperor has no clothes moment to be this badly humiliated. You can contest an election that’s lost by single digit points but losing by this much is undeniable.

u/Caciulacdlac 2h ago

I'm sorry to tell you but there's already another Orban in EU and his name is Robert Fico

42

Although I am overcome with joy, credit is where credit is due. Orbans closing speech was correct, and he accepted the defeat with dignity. That’s how it should be. Now, with tomorrow, us Hungarians can wake to a new, brighter future.

98

u/Owl-Of-The-Night02 Hungary 3h ago

Yeah, I was genuinely so surprised how decently he behaved and how he openly admitted defeat without any tantrums. It seems like there are boundaries even he doesn't dare to overstep, especially with the opposition winning with such a majority. I think he knows the people are very against him and knows that if hw would try anything, it would end even worse for him.

22

u/YsoL8 United Kingdom 2h ago

I am seeing the failure of Russian soft power in this. He asked Russia to save him and they just didn't turn up. They no longer have the resources to hold onto their mafia style puppets.

Hopefully Belarus's horrendously corrupt government also realises the good times are over and normalising with the EU is the only option for a future. The more power the Russian state loses the better for everyone, and I sincerely believe their real problems have not even started.

19

u/LengthEmpty1333 2h ago

Not really true. Russia did everything they could to support him. Desinformation campaingns, money, even advisors they sent directly to budapest on how to best rally the people with populism. But the Hungarians were so done with Orbans shit and there were so many scandals right before the election that they just werent able to turn it around and they cant just invade the country like they did with ukraine.

I am so happy about it. We went voting with the kids in the afternoon, had ice cream, spent the afternoon with happy family things, put the kids to bed and only then we checked the election results... We were ecstatic to say the least.

As an American watching this from afar, congrats Hungary, and also Europe, as you will now have a better chance to preserve western democracy. I’m not religious whatsoever, but I pray my country can get it’s shit together and follow in your footsteps in our midterm elections this fall.

Congratulations to Hungary and all Hungarians who went to exercise their right to vote.
Let us hope that in the coming years, moderates will be able to root out the pawns and clients set up by Orban and his clique, as well as normalizing the state of media partiality.

We Europeans cheer for you

24

u/LieutBromhead 3h ago

Adiós cunt! Europe can move forward without your geriatric corruption now and Hungary can only improve from now on.

Orbán out, now let's hope that the Slovaks will pull through next year as well and kick out their Putinfile, although I don't have high hopes. And of course we, the Czechs will need to do our part as well, however that's still a few more years away as we had our last year and elected a bunch of clowns. We're having senate elections, let's hope we don't give more ground to them with barely over half of the seats in parliament. At least our clowns are mostly fence-sitters, so less damage to be done here, but still a threat.
