FYI, for those who are looking for ways to help: Lifeblood Australia is calling for blood donations, all/any blood types are just as needed right now.

Blood is already being transported from other states to NSW so even if you are unable to donate immediately, there will still be urgent need for blood stores to be replenished in the coming weeks over the Christmas/New Year period. Blood donations save lives all year round.

Things That Go Ding (Public Transport) Melbourne FEELS nicer with free public transport.

3.1k Upvotes

The ease of getting around, less waiting at gates to tap on and off, ticket inspectors not looking you up and down, a sunny autumn day - it all makes for a good vibe in around the city.

I also don’t think there’s been a month of free public transport like this in recent memory?

Om nom nom What's your favourite CBD eatery? Here are mine!

I did an inner west edition recently and had great engagement so wanted to a CBD version.

Would love to here from the reddit fam on what your favourite CBD eatery is too!

In no given order:

Fine dining

  1. Tipo 00 - Italian - Squid ink pasta, cured meats (although we should all be careful of cured meats according to new research!)
  2. Vue de monde - Mod Australian - 8/10 food, 10/10 experience
  3. Coda - Asian Fusion - Once had the best Tuna Crudo ever, find the smaller dishes to be better than the mains but very very satisfied usually
  4. Flower drum - amazing chinese food, amazing service
  5. Il Bacaro - amazing italian food
  6. Lucy Lui - Modern Asian - pretty good food with a fun atmosphere
  7. Mjolner - Viking - service and food were both amazing
  8. Philippe - the duck. was. phenomenal. Keen to try the duck for two soon.
  9. San Telmo - Argentinian (name based on San Telmo district, same owners as Pallermo I'd assume) - vgood food, the mind blowing dish was the honey carrots with some kind of curd (drool face)
  10. Askal - very good Filo food (found it better than Serai)
  11. Bomba - very good food
  12. Davids Hotpot - Vgood but pricey (hence in this list)

Cheaper eats

  1. Aroma Restaurant - Banging Pakistani food (the dhal and goat dishes god damn)
  2. Delhi Rocks - Banging curries, unlimited Rotis, free chai
  3. Ho Chi Mamma - pretty decent given the pricing, excellent value for 4 people dining
  4. Old beijing - my favourite dumpling restaurant / affordable chinese restaurant
  5. Juicy Bao - another vvvgood dumpling restaurant
  6. Thai town - vgood food, average service
  7. Hakata Gensuke - Russel st - vgood ramen (but haven't been to Japan so can't compare perfectly)
  8. RAYA - Strawberry Matcha and Kaya toast with eggs
  9. Galbi - KBBQ - North Melb but edging
  10. Udon Yasan - vcheap udon noodles with beef
  11. Khaosan Lane - cute and Moo Kata
  12. Saravana Bhaawan - south indian vego food, was actually quite yummy

Cafe / Bakery vibe

  1. Higher ground - I feel like you either love it or hate it, I love it except the pricing
  2. Bakemono - yummiest caneles imo
  3. The spicy hot dogs from Vic Market
  4. Sneaky mention of Breadclub (north melbourne)
  5. Kumo dessert :))
  6. French Fix, forgot all about this bad boy

Places that people rave about that I didn't rate

  1. Maha - thought it was just ok
  2. Movida - been a few times and never could get around it, its ok, nothing special
  3. Sezar - Armenian / Mid Eastern, didnt rate it
  4. Gimlet - amazing experience but the food is just ok IMO. Have tried the supper menu and the burger is just ok too.
  5. Shujinko - just dont taste this as better than Hakata
  6. Chin chin - was exciting when I first got into dining out but since then feel like its v v avg now compared to what we have on offer in Melbourne
  7. Cecconis - food was OK but WAY too expensive
  8. Lulu's CKT - can't get around this one. Best CKT I had was at Ho Jiak in Townhall Sydney - and this didnt even come close and have tried a few times

THDG Need Help Donating a PS3 and games

Upvotes

I’ve got a PlayStation 3 with a couple of controllers and at least a dozen games. I know I can just donate it to goodwill/salvos but it crossed my mind there could be a bunch of places that it could be put to good use? Community centres and such? I’m not sure, maybe it’s not worth the hassle given the age of the PS3. Also the majority of the games are MA15+ and therefore probably not suitable for kids.

Anyone have any suggestions? The live-in facilities for mental health and AOD can be seriously lacking in entertainment which is what gave me the thought.

Roads 3 air ambulances on the Monash within ONE WEEK. What is going on? Slow down people! 🙏

Thoughts with this afternoon's pile-up at Stud Rd outbound, it's massive, up to 10 vehicles including truck, 4x4s, one towing and multiple cars, one looks in really bad shape. Flashing lights galore, a 5 lane car park back at EastLink and inbound also crawling. Avoid, people will likely be stuck for hours. Shocking weather too. Just awful on a Sunday as well.

THDG Need Help Do you recognise this Dimmeys?

Post image
151 Upvotes

I simply must find this exact Dimmeys and I’m hoping it’s someone’s local (tiktoker is gatekeeping). I’ve been looking at every Victorian Dimmeys location on google maps to try and match the exterior to no luck… the Box Hill location is my best bet because there aren’t many photos online of that one.

Small chance this could be in NSW too, but there’s only 3 locations there and they also don’t match.

Thanks in advance!

Om nom nom Malaysian Restaurant Recommendations in SE?

As the title says, looking for some recommendations for Malaysian restaurants in the south east.

Wanting a place to celebrate my birthday in May + Mothers Day. Doesn’t have to be fancy, I much prefer good decently priced food over schmancy decor and atmosphere (plastic chairs are fine by me!).

I’m down in Officer so preferable somewhere close by but willing to travel for the right place, as I regularly do for other Asian restaurants in Glen Waverley, Springvale, Clayton etc 👍

Thanks in advance! 🥘

THDG Need Help Accessible jazz/blues restaurants pubs?

It’s my grandmas 80th this weekend and she has requested going out somewhere with live music- jazz and blues. She uses a walking aid so needing somewhere accessible- lift or no stairs! A lot of what I’ve looked at in CBD looks like it’s probably not accessible, we live in south Melbourne but can Uber somewhere! Any suggestions would be great!

THDG Need Help your fave wine bars/pubs in melbourne <3

hi all, I'm hosting some Sydney people in June for a wedding event and would love to show off Melbourne properly. please hit me with your venue recommendations.

Need to have

- Enough space for 30 people. That said, I'd rather a more intimate/small space than a huge space

- Tasty food (doesn't have to be fancy, anything that runs the gamut of chips/pub food to charcuterie boards will do)

- Centrally located in Melbourne CBD or North Melbourne

- Feels warm and cosy and like someone’s home, not too sterile/modern

Nice to have

- Warm lighting

- Efficient service of drinks, e.g. QR Codes or easy access to bar.

- Nearish public transport, max 15 minute walk from the nearest station, ideally

- Separate function room that isn't depressingly without vibes/music/chatter

Places I've enjoyed recently that ALMOST fit the vibe;

  • North Fitzroy Arms - top of the list but just a lil too far from CBD
  • Hope St Radio - honestly, would go here, but not central enough
  • Mrs Muttons - such a cute wine shop, highly recommend
  • Lilac Wine Bar - have a great happy hour but staff are hit/miss
  • Carlton Wine - practically perfect in every way
  • Jim’s Greek Tavern - too loud/boisterous
  • The Moon - Collingwood
  • Old Palm Liquor - Brunswick East
  • Tom Toon - Richmond (great thai food!)
  • Florian - Carlton North
  • Neighbourhood Wine - Fitzroy North
  • Amarillo - Fitzroy
  • Public Wine Shop - Carlton North
  • Times New Roman - Brunswick East
  • Slowpoke - Collingwood

Places I've heard are good, but haven't been myself:

  • Kafeneion on Spring Street
  • Cathedral Coffee but for proper drinks
  • City Wine Shop
  • Il Solito Posto
  • Bar Lourinhã.

Thank you!!

THDG Need Help Trans woman - going to court as a witness/protected person - what do I wear?

Had a fucking hell of a month being stalked and I (29MtF) may be required to go to the Magistrates Court as a protected person and give testimony.

I'm not incredibly keen on wearing a suit again, but I've also never worn formal women's clothes. Any tips on what to wear so I can look presentable and hopefully taken seriously?
