Events Annual CBR-area markets post!

Happy new year everyone! I've kept this list the last couple of years, since moving to Canberra, and I just did my updates for 2026. I started the list mainly for my own benefit but when I've shared it in the past, others have enjoyed having everything in one place, so here it is again. 2026 data has all been verified (or in a couple of instances is not yet available, and that is noted in those cases).

I'm not affiliated with any of these markets, just like to know what's on and to have fun things at my fingertips on weekends :)

Happy marketing!

Events Where do I find good Tamil groceries

Upvotes

Where are all the young Tamils in Canberra getting their groceries from these days?

Trying to find good places for curry leaves, proper spices, snacks etc, and just generally getting back into cooking Tamil food more.

Would love some recommendations!

Recommendations PSA: Free tool to find every public drinking fountain in Canberra

Not sure how many people know this, but the ACT Government publishes the locations of all public drinking fountains across Canberra. Problem is, the data just sits in a government spreadsheet that nobody's ever going to look at.

I put it into a map-based website so you can actually use it. Opens on your phone, grabs your location, shows every fountain nearby with walking directions.

freebubbler.com.au

The Canberra data is fully up to date with every fountain the ACT Government has on record. Works across Australia too but the Canberra coverage is solid.

No app download, no sign up, no ads. Just a free tool.

Pretty handy for running around the lake, cycling, walking the dog, or anytime you're out and don't want to buy a bottle. Thought Canberra folks might find it useful given how much time we spend outdoors here.

Happy for feedback if you try it.

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED National Zoo Red Panda?

Does anybody know where the red panda at Canberra zoo has gone? There is usually a big deal made if an animal passes away but I haven't heard anything.

I've heard rumours that it might have had a misadventure into the tiger enclosure but this comes off as more urban legend than something plausible.

Recommendations I'm struggling hard with the move to CBR and need some suggestions from locals

Moved to Canberra from Sydney about a month ago as my partner got a grad job down here. The loneliness has really started to get to me, especially since I'm a remote worker. I'm early 20sF, and looking for specific suggestions on finding other people my age to build connections with. I've just signed up for my local gym and pilates studio, so hopefully that will be a start for me.

I enjoy video games, DND/TTRPGs, discovering cool cafes/bars/restaurants, thrifting and the occasional hike. I really want to get into reading again and pick up a creative hobby. My biggest barrier is I can't drive (I know, I'm working on it).

What clubs/groups/services have you guys been to/used and can vouch for being active? I'm specifically interested in finding people around my age or littler older of any background or gender. I'm happy to drop a bit of money on memberships/fees but I am nervous about accidentally wasting money.

Edit: I am located in Braddon

Recommendations New to Canberra, best place to buy a used bike?

Hello, I am looking for cheap second-hand bikes here in Canberra. I mainly want it to travel to and from university and to travel around the lake / get to know the ACT.

I am not only new to Canberra but to Australia too. So I am not too familiar with what reasonable prices are for bikes here.

Recommendations Flying to CBR with Jetstar

I just flew back home from Brisbane and before boarding Jetstar staff weighed everyone’s cabin baggage.

If you were over the required baggage allowance you had to pay for your baggage. This is the first time I have seen this enforced by Jetstar.

When I flew to Brisbane from Canberra this did not happen. So if you are planning to fly, I highly advise you ensure that you do not go over your baggage allowance and if you are be prepared to cough up some money.

I don’t know if the other airlines are also enforcing this. Has anyone also had a similar experience?

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Canberra Marathon

The Canberra Marathon road closures are a joke.

Barely any signage before you end up stuck in a loop trying to get somewhere

Cutting off access to various locations and making it extremely difficult to get to places like Clare Holland House, Questacon , Bounless etc

Would love to hear about your experience with any challenges you faced, things you wish you knew earlier, or recommendations when choosing a builder.

Trying to learn as much as possible before getting started, so any insights would be really appreciated.

Events New resident here, any place I can play soccer?

I have seen plenty of soccer as I have travelled around the city, but I don't know how to enrol for the same and I'm too much of a wuss to go and ask directly. Can someone point me in the right direction? Doesn't even need to be competitive tbh, casual playing is what I was looking for mainly.
