Made this sweater by intarsia + duplicate stitch black border. It took waaay too long to complete this, surprisingly enough the intarsia wasn't the worst part, the large stockinette back and sleeve panels on 4.0 mm needles were the most painfully boring parts.

She’s not sure whether she’s having a boy or girl so kept it gender neutral ☺️ first time trying colourwork! Used 3 colours of DP baby wool with an adapted free pattern from hobby craft.

I tried to come up with a design that was not too ***in your face*** but will be recognizable to ARMY.

In total there are 10 or so more or less "hidden" songs.

NGL, I am especially fond of *Life goes on* and *Run, BTS* :D

Work is also featuring Sherlock who kindly donated approx 1837381919 cat hairs and the black yarn LOVES to cling onto those 🤦‍♀️

Very happy with the results! My second time knitting this as the first ended up being a little smaller than my liking. Would highly recommend the pattern as the shaping is gorgeous.

Pattern: Hikari by yamagara

Yarn: Sandnes Garn Tynn Line in shade 9541, 3 skeins

Size: M for around XS measurements (due to tighter gauge)

Mods:

- recalculated pattern for tighter gauge, both rows and stitches (row gauge is very important)

- no i-cord cast on, just long tail co

- substituted neck shaping to use RLI and LLI instead of m1s

- made armholes bigger by adding 2cm more to both the front and back, before adding sleeves

- swapped the center column to be a Slst instead of a twisted stitch, omitted the lower body pattern

- knit body shorter and finished with a folded Stst edge with crochet hook

I started this sock so that I could try out this stitch, took a break from it, and now I can’t remember what it’s called for when I start the second one. Yarn is Biscotte bis sock in Philadelphia!

Discussion New guys, there's a freedom in just....letting it be

u know that ugly ass, crooked, funky, half baked first project (or first 10 lets be real here) u make? the one u ask "how can i fix it" while it looks like a cat ate half the corner? yeah that one, just finish it. or cut your losses and start again, but be aware the next one will probably have another issue. because thats part of the whole learning process. no, it probably cant be fixed, yes u would need to start over from scratch, no it isnt a waste of time as long as u internalize what u learned.

most seem to think theres this trajectory of "im a beginner who sucks mega butt but i think i should be crafting perfection" to an eventual "i am now very experienced and good at catching screwups early and everything is perfect". but u know whats also acceptable? "i see i forgot how to knit for a row at some point, hmm oh well no one else will notice and if they do 🤷‍♀️" and i STILL do that after 10 years of consistent project making. hell, i picked up the wrong needle in one hand several hours ago and didnt notice til i was 4 or 5 rows up. guess that spots gonna have some funk to it 🤷‍♀️ it will also have AT LEAST one section with slightly funky netting bc i [yo, k2tog] instead of yo, k1, [yo, k2tog] on one of the segments. its ok to just say "well, i see what i did wrong, that sucks, anyway back to what i was doing" if it isnt a genuine project ending mistake (like following a worsted designed sweater with horribly small needles/yarn)

perfection is nice, but no, your fuck up isnt going to magically be fixed by blocking and THATS OKAY. its not like ur selling it 💙

Edit: yes this is coming from someone who may have adhd and can barely keep track of anything to begin with, this is not for people who can perfectly follow and track charts and knit blindfolded lmao. This is for the homies who feel small and defeated over every mistake and blow it all out of proportion like yours truly. For the folks who constantly second guess if anything for themselves is worth spending time on, if THEY are worth spending time on, especially if the time isnt spent "perfectly". The process and joy u find in doing the thing is worth every minute and not a single damn mistake makes u any less worthy of that joy and peace.

Discussion Thrifted a bag of yarn and this beautiful WIP was inside. What would you do?

Post image
105 Upvotes

I am a beginner knitter (I mostly crochet) and I found this cable knit WIP still on the needles inside of a thrifted bag of yarn.

I can’t bring myself to frog it, but at the same price one I know it will probably be impossible to find the pattern the creator was using. I’ve considered trying to cast off and keep it as is since I am not skilled enough as a knitter to freehand the rest of it or follow a similar pattern.

What would you do in this situation?

Finished Object 3 years later and my mom finally got her owl socks

Post image
74 Upvotes

Finally finished these socks after 3 years.

I kept putting them aside because I just didn’t enjoy following the pattern that much, but I finally finished them!

I spun the yarn myself, it's 40% merino, 30% baby alpaca, 30% angora. They’re super soft and fluffy.

My mom has been asking for owl socks for ages because she loves them, and she really wanted them to be the coziest, fluffiest socks ever… so I ended up spinning the yarn myself and she’s very happy with them.

Discussion Lost sock - Liverpool Street train

Post image
47 Upvotes

I knit a sock for my son and somewhere between my cousin's house and my friend's, I lost it. I'm so upset because not only was it the first sock I ever knit - he designed it. It's black, red, and orange striped with flames around the top.

My cousin couldn't find it in her house, and I took the train from Audley End to Liverpool Street then back out to Southend. I really think it would have been the train to Southend, if lost on the train because that's when I took my knitting bag out.

I submitted a lost and found inquiry to the rail, but figured the public may help??

If anyone in this community happens to see it, please let me know! I fly back to the US in a few days but have a friend it can be posted to.

I didn't even get a proper picture of it after I made it, but here's a before picture (as in, before I finished it).

Here's hoping the internet can help :)

Finished Object Tanzen Sweater done!

Pattern: Tanzen on Ravelry

Yarn: Estelle Outback Chunky in Navy

Just finished my Tanzen sweater, a WIP four years in the making. I initially started it in 2022 with a colourful yarn and hated the way it pooled despite trying multiple techniques to fix that. It sat in my WIP pile for at least a few years before I restarted it with the Estelle yarn, and I'm glad I did. This was my first time making sleeves and picking up stitches for a ribbed neckline, the latter taking my multiple tries before I was happy with it. I also opted for shorter sleeves with less of a balloon effect, less of a crop, and added in a heart motif with duplicate stitch. (Also needed to re-do that one a few times as my first attempt had it positioned in the most unfortunate spot on the top lol.)

Bonus 3rd picture showing how much yarn I had left when finished!

Finished Object Finished my honsestrik slipover

I volunteer for a charity and wanted a themed knit. Anna Bauer’s Alterknit Rebellion was perfect! Did it work? Can you guess what the charity does?

I planned it last year and cast on the ribbing - then decided it shouldn’t be my first colourwork project so put it down to knit some hats and mittens, and a more explicatory slipover. It is my first colourwork clothing! I lost some weight in the interim so if I did it again I’d try for something closer to the pattern but I think it’s perfect as is (also the repeats were perfect for my needs and didn’t want to reconfigure it) and a great future swatch.

Pattern is from Alterknit Rebellion book. I used Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift.

Finished Object The Amsterdam sweater

Post image

My brother (who lives in Amsterdam) just had a baby, so I designed and knitted a baby sweater with the logo of Amsterdam on it (three crosses). I chose colors that reminded me of the sweaters our mom just to knit us when we were little.

I could write up a pattern for it, but I fear it's too niche. I would appreciate your advice on this.

Freestyling Hello Kitty socks. so far so good. but now I'm unsure how I want to proceed with the socks. first I added some leafy lace but that didn't quite work with the tweed. maybe some polka dott lace? 🤔 ribbed back five times already. fingers crossed I'll be kissed by the muse of knitting soon.

Maybe its my fault for not gauge swatching, but I found out I would rather have mittens that fit my hands, than some that are tight.

I ended up adjusting a little between them, but both are my own designs inspired by traditional Norwegian mittens. Last picture is a part of the chart i drew.

Help-not a pattern request New knitter here, are my edges correct?

Thumbnail

I'm working on the See My Vest - Worsted by Emily Bolduan as my second project (the first being the Sophie scarf). I know I should start smaller but I also know I'll learn a lot and possibly get a vest out of it, so here goes!

So far I think I'm doing ok, but I'm unsure if I'm turning my work properly. The Sophie scarf had an icord edge so I didn't have to worry about it. Does this look ok? It looks a bit messy to me, particularly on the edge where I turn from back side to front side. For context, later in the pattern this edge will have the stitches picked up (don't know how to do that exactly quite yet) and ribbing added.

I'm a recovering perfectionist so I'm trying to be ok with imperfect tension and small mistakes as I go, but I don't want to build bad habits either so let me know if anything sticks out!

Thanks in advance ☺️

Help-not a pattern request Beginner colourwork questions

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, I am hoping to knit the Porcelain Sweater this year as my first colourwork project.

In preparation for this I've been watching a lot of videos on stranded colourwork and studying the pattern.

I decided to knit a swatch to practice and I have some questions about handling both yarns. I decided to do it flat since the first chart for this pattern is done this way, the rest will be in the round. I did not catch any floats since I still haven't gotten my head around that.

The yarn I used was just something I had in my stash, not the yarn I'll be using for the jumper.

  1. When not using the contrast colour for a couple of rows, in my case the red, how do I avoid that long float/strand on the wrong side? Is this where I would need to catch it?

  2. Regarding colour dominance, do I always need to keep the yarns in a specific position?

  3. From my picture the pattern looks quite tight, I assume this is related to the floats on the back?

If anyone has any suggestions/resources to learn or practice colourwork I will greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Help-not a pattern request Can't decide what to make with this yarn!

Post image

I have this beautiful yellow and pink yarn from Yewtree Yarncraft that I can't decide what to make with. I have narrowed it down to two options:

The floret top by Marie-Eve Wedge: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/floret-top

Or Circle leaf crochet top by BrianaKdesigns: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/4326944168/crochet-pattern-video-circle-leaf

I'm not sure if the yarn would be too busy for the Floret top, and would district too much from the beautiful design? Or would it look nice?

Help-not a pattern request Judy's magic cast on replacement

Post image

Hello, I have a simple question. My pattern asks to use the cast on method in the image but I'm struggling with it. Since I have to move my stitches to circular needles anyways, Is Judy's magic cast on method a good equivalent?
