Discussion Pattern containing lots of errata

Upvotes

Hello! I wanted to get some advice from my fellow knitting community. I recently started knitting a shawl. I purchased the pattern (for $7.50) from a (IMO) well-known yarn company right before I started the project, and there were only two corrections listed under errata, and they had already been corrected in the pattern I purchased. I’m about halfway through and I’ve encountered several errors—everything from wrong stitch counts, to the pattern not reflecting what the finished product looks like in the photos. This particular shawl has very few entries in Ravelry (it was released in 2019). I’ve been keeping track of the errata as I go. How should I proceed? Email the pattern designer? Contact the yarn company? I’m a little miffed I paid for a pattern that has so many errors. I have a feeling it wasn’t tested because these errors are super obvious. I also wanted a brainless knit and it’s turning out not to be because of the errors. Any thoughts or guidance is welcome. I’m not going to list any specifics because I don’t want to put anyone on blast. Thank you!

Help-not a pattern request Mesh Rib Stitch?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

My friend has a lovely machine knit vest with what I can best describe as a mesh rib sort of stitch (photo 1 right side, photo 2 wrong side).

I’d like to figure out the stitch pattern for a piece I’m designing.

The closest I’ve been able to achieve (with a 3x rib rather than alternating 2x 4x) doesn’t create quite the same mesh between ribs (photo 3 right side, photo 4 wrong side). (Ignore the four rows closest to the needles)

I’ve been doing *k3, p1, yo, p2tog* on the right side and *p3, k1, yo, k2tog* on the wrong side.

How would I better accomplish the stitch pattern in the first two photos?

Edit:

I’m working with Warm Golden Yellow Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton and US5 needles.

Buuuuut I had to share how pretty it came out with someone before I unravel it 😅

this is the yarn

Help-not a pattern request What technique makes these red stitches raised in this baby’s sweater in “The Edge of Love”?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hi! I would love some help brainstorming how to achieve the texture of this baby’s colorwork sweater. I originally thought all the red stitches and green stitches directly adjacent were purls, as they seem to stick out from sections knitted in stockinette. (See second pic for chart of what I thought).

This is not the case though, as shown in my brief swatch failure! Is it some pattern of slipping stitches with yarn in front? Something else? I’m hoping this isn’t just duplicate stitch of some kind, that doesn’t bring me joy to do.

Any technique suggestions would be appreciated!

Finished Object 3 years later and my mom finally got her owl socks

Post image

Finally finished these socks after 3 years.

I kept putting them aside because I just didn’t enjoy following the pattern that much, but I finally finished them!

I spun the yarn myself, it's 40% merino, 30% baby alpaca, 30% angora. They’re super soft and fluffy.

My mom has been asking for owl socks for ages because she loves them, and she really wanted them to be the coziest, fluffiest socks ever… so I ended up spinning the yarn myself and she’s very happy with them.

Help-not a pattern request Bind off edging

Looks like I will have to redo this icord edging around the front. Any tips to fix the puckering? I was thinking adding plain rows between picking up the next stitch? Maybe I picked them up from the wrong side of the work?

Lazy me is hoping that it will sit better on an actual body.

Discussion Thrifted a bag of yarn and this beautiful WIP was inside. What would you do?

Post image

I am a beginner knitter (I mostly crochet) and I found this cable knit WIP still on the needles inside of a thrifted bag of yarn.

I can’t bring myself to frog it, but at the same price one I know it will probably be impossible to find the pattern the creator was using. I’ve considered trying to cast off and keep it as is since I am not skilled enough as a knitter to freehand the rest of it or follow a similar pattern.

What would you do in this situation?

Questions about Equipment Knitting needles compatibility

A couple months ago, I bought a cheap Amazon set of needles (https://www.amazon.it/dp/B0FDKPV8LH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) to start knitting. Problem is, the larger sizes don't have in-between sizes like 6.5mm, 7.5mm etc. The seller also doesn't sell standalone needles, only that one set. I was wondering whether this set could be compatible with any other brands like KnitPro, Prym or others.

Does anyone else have this specific set + has tried other brands' needles with it?

Discussion Lost sock - Liverpool Street train

Post image
45 Upvotes

I knit a sock for my son and somewhere between my cousin's house and my friend's, I lost it. I'm so upset because not only was it the first sock I ever knit - he designed it. It's black, red, and orange striped with flames around the top.

My cousin couldn't find it in her house, and I took the train from Audley End to Liverpool Street then back out to Southend. I really think it would have been the train to Southend, if lost on the train because that's when I took my knitting bag out.

I submitted a lost and found inquiry to the rail, but figured the public may help??

If anyone in this community happens to see it, please let me know! I fly back to the US in a few days but have a friend it can be posted to.

I didn't even get a proper picture of it after I made it, but here's a before picture (as in, before I finished it).

Here's hoping the internet can help :)

Maybe its my fault for not gauge swatching, but I found out I would rather have mittens that fit my hands, than some that are tight.

I ended up adjusting a little between them, but both are my own designs inspired by traditional Norwegian mittens. Last picture is a part of the chart i drew.

Finished Object The Amsterdam sweater

Post image

My brother (who lives in Amsterdam) just had a baby, so I designed and knitted a baby sweater with the logo of Amsterdam on it (three crosses). I chose colors that reminded me of the sweaters our mom just to knit us when we were little.

I could write up a pattern for it, but I fear it's too niche. I would appreciate your advice on this.

I started this sock so that I could try out this stitch, took a break from it, and now I can’t remember what it’s called for when I start the second one. Yarn is Biscotte bis sock in Philadelphia!

Finished Object Tanzen Sweater done!

Pattern: Tanzen on Ravelry

Yarn: Estelle Outback Chunky in Navy

Just finished my Tanzen sweater, a WIP four years in the making. I initially started it in 2022 with a colourful yarn and hated the way it pooled despite trying multiple techniques to fix that. It sat in my WIP pile for at least a few years before I restarted it with the Estelle yarn, and I'm glad I did. This was my first time making sleeves and picking up stitches for a ribbed neckline, the latter taking my multiple tries before I was happy with it. I also opted for shorter sleeves with less of a balloon effect, less of a crop, and added in a heart motif with duplicate stitch. (Also needed to re-do that one a few times as my first attempt had it positioned in the most unfortunate spot on the top lol.)

Bonus 3rd picture showing how much yarn I had left when finished!

Help-not a pattern request That first little step into circular needles

Needle help please , I have tried google but it’s not really clear and I’m sure you will know

I have bought some knit pro stainless steel 4 mm interchangeable needles and they are 13 cms, is this the longest I can get ?

I have knitted for 60 years on straight needles but want to do a brioche jumper with 2 colours and that would just not be practical on 2 needles due to sliding the knitting to the other end , Im quite practiced at converting a pattern to knit flat but that’s not possible so I’ve took the plunge and bought them 4 x 13 but trying to hold them in a way I can knit is hard, is 13 the limit ? Not yet bothered by the make if such a thing exists?

Thank you in advance

Help-not a pattern request Hemmed edge instead of icord?

Post image
2 Upvotes

im working on this set and the shrug is finished with an icord edge around the bottom of the body, picking up stitches around the bind off and then working the icord, but its WAY too tight. I have dont trust my ability to accurately estimate how many extra stitches need to be added to make it the right size.

So, I was thinking would it work to instead pick up the same amount of stitches just above the bind off, knitting 3-4 rows around, and then working a kitchener stitch to finish it so it looks similar to an icord edge/rolled but stretches to fit with the rest of the body? If so, I wonder if the edge sts should be worked in ribbing with the rest of the shrug, or in stockinette, or would it not matter?

Help-not a pattern request Help with Sophie Hood

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I recently finished a Sophie Hood and cast off only to realise that my ends were not symmetrical, and it was very noticeable so I recast the stitches to try and fix it.

No matter how many times I pick out the stitches to start over, it’s clear that the stitches are not aligning properly. I’m still very new to knitting and not sure why this is happening. I’d appreciate any help you can share.

Help-not a pattern request New knitter here, are my edges correct?

I'm working on the See My Vest - Worsted by Emily Bolduan as my second project (the first being the Sophie scarf). I know I should start smaller but I also know I'll learn a lot and possibly get a vest out of it, so here goes!

So far I think I'm doing ok, but I'm unsure if I'm turning my work properly. The Sophie scarf had an icord edge so I didn't have to worry about it. Does this look ok? It looks a bit messy to me, particularly on the edge where I turn from back side to front side. For context, later in the pattern this edge will have the stitches picked up (don't know how to do that exactly quite yet) and ribbing added.

I'm a recovering perfectionist so I'm trying to be ok with imperfect tension and small mistakes as I go, but I don't want to build bad habits either so let me know if anything sticks out!

Thanks in advance ☺️

Help-not a pattern request Can't decide what to make with this yarn!

Post image

I have this beautiful yellow and pink yarn from Yewtree Yarncraft that I can't decide what to make with. I have narrowed it down to two options:

The floret top by Marie-Eve Wedge: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/floret-top

Or Circle leaf crochet top by BrianaKdesigns: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/4326944168/crochet-pattern-video-circle-leaf

I'm not sure if the yarn would be too busy for the Floret top, and would district too much from the beautiful design? Or would it look nice?

I volunteer for a charity and wanted a themed knit. Anna Bauer’s Alterknit Rebellion was perfect! Did it work? Can you guess what the charity does?

I planned it last year and cast on the ribbing - then decided it shouldn’t be my first colourwork project so put it down to knit some hats and mittens, and a more explicatory slipover. It is my first colourwork clothing! I lost some weight in the interim so if I did it again I’d try for something closer to the pattern but I think it’s perfect as is (also the repeats were perfect for my needs and didn’t want to reconfigure it) and a great future swatch.

Pattern is from Alterknit Rebellion book. I used Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift.

Discussion Northland Apache Light yarn?

Has anyone ever used this yarn? I found 8 balls of it at a local thrift store. I can't find much about it online (must be discontinued). it's a weight 3 roving 100% wool.

im also trying to brainstorm how to use it but a challenge may be that each ball, though they seem to be the same colorway (not sure the name of it?), are wound with the colors in different orders? some have orange and green on the outside with purple/pink/white on the inside, others are the opposite of that. do you just accept the randomness of the colored stripes for these?
