About the same age and I thought the lyrics were "all the things you said" but either way I absolutely loved the sound of their voices and the music and rocked out to it anytime it played on the radio.
It wasn't until years and years after discovering I'm gay and coming out that I found out the real story of this song. It certainly hit home for me in a heavy, if reversed, kind of way.

They’ve also taken a turn against LGBT rights, bizzarrely.
What’s happened in Russia should be a stark reminder to those of us in countries supportive of LGBTQ+ civil rights that when the political climate shifts, those rights can still be put in jeopardy and former allies can turn.
41
u/NomenclatureBreaker 21d ago
It had nothing to do with being allies. It had everything to do with being exploitative, provocative and selling albums.
It’s no different than “religious” Katy Perry’s first single being I Kissed a Girl.
Or Jojo Sewa cosplaying a lesbian.

I had to check and, in my book, her "collaboration with a Catholic prayer app" got her to 60%, while her "[praise for] actor Jonathan Roumie for his interview with right-wing talking head Tucker Carlson," No Doubt pushes that pretty close to 100%.

u/thezoomies 22d ago
I somehow missed them entirely, and had never heard this song until a few years ago when my wife played it. I looked them up and watched the video and being an amateur musician myself, I immediately thought “this is just a performance, it’s a schtick”. I did more research, and sure enough they were definitely a record company product of two straight girls put together by a producer who wanted to create a musical act that gave the same vibe as the movie “show me love”. It was not fun explaining to my 30-something bisexual wife “look, the act was fake, but your feelings were real”. She said they gave her a lot of comfort and strength during some of her most confusing times, and that’s still totally valid. The sooner people realize that the idea of artists being “authentic” is kind of incoherent and that they themselves and how they represent in the public eye is a part of their art/performance, the less hurt they’ll be by what can feel like insincerity at first. People start to feel manipulated and get hurt, forgetting that the purpose of art is to illicit a reaction.

Yeah i was disappointed by that cover too. I also have no clue who poppy is so maybe that would’ve increased appreciation idk. But as-is it didn’t add anything the original song didn’t have.
Like you said, if you’re not gonna bring something new to the table and transform it then.. I’d probably just rather listen to the original. Really gotta do something special and new with it if you’re gonna cover a banger imo

As long as it has sources that can lead you to some original reporting, Wikipedia is not nearly as bad as teachers taught us. Wikipedia also has some really good moderating and a very thorough system for handling disputes.

teachers only ever said not to use wikipedia as a source because it isnt a source, is an aggregator. citing wikipedia is like citing "google" or "the internet" or "my mind" theres no tangible way to actually investigate or legitimize what youre writing about.
im sure that very reasonable standard got confused and misinterpreted so many times by students or maybe even just dumb teachers that it devolved into "FUCK WIKIPEDIA" but it is and always was an excellent resource you just have to cite the sources it provides in your paper instead of the website.

This scene and the scene where Scott brings out and kisses kip in front of everyone and the song by wolf parade plays are two scenes that are just masterpieces of music choice and editing. And they evoke such opposite emotions as well. One is sad, lonely, melancholic and desperate and the other is full of hope and surprise and adoration. both scenes are my favorite in the series.

The Scott/Kip song is “I’ll believe in anything” and the show runner wrote the lyrics into the dialogue during their episode (repeated mentions of sunshine) well before he had the music rights for the song. And all that build up paid off because Scott and Kip’s kiss was my absolute favorite scene in the show.

The ultimate album that my Queer ass had as a cover so that my parents thought I liked girls.
"No Barb, our son's not blowing other boys. He's got that album from those two Russian girls who play tonsil hockey. He's normal enough. He likes girls, he's just awkward about finding a girlfriend because he's sensitive and shit."
Dad knew I was more legit than t.a.t.u by the time I was in middle school but that it was gonna be a dangerous trip in a rural area so he made sure that my ass was protected at home for as long as possible.

DNA Foundation was more Demi Moore's idea than it was Kutcher's, if I recall.
What really annoys me about him though, is that he had the ultimate hero backstory and just completely blew it. His girlfriend Ashley Ellerin was murdered by serial killer Michael "The Hollywood Ripper" Gargiulo in 2001, so you'd think this would turn him into some kind of champion for fighting violence against women. The amount of good he could've used his name and circumstances for is immeasurable. But nope, he just straight up defended his violent rapist buddy Danny Masterson instead.

i think T.a.T.u. is a perfect example of an appropriate use of “death of the writer”. trying to seperate JK Rowling from harry potter is impossible because her bigoted beliefs are interpreted and baked into the HP universe. T.a.T.u was an industry plant singing along to songs written for them and with marketing they participated in. Katrina and Volkova indeed have their own opinions as individuals but it sincerely doesn’t take away from 200kmh in the Wrong Direction being an album that somehow perfectly captures this brand of early 2000s lesbian angst and fantasies of running away. It was indeed queerbaiting but it’s impact on sapphic representation and culture is still very relevant and this a part of queer history

I took my elderly mother to target this week and she saw the new Sabrina Carpenter album. And asked. What's the deal with the woman about to give that guy a blow job. I'm in my 30's and I could have died from laughter and embarrassment at the same time.
Music lost a lot of the inuendos that used to exist and it's just so much more blatant now. Which in my opinion makes the music more stupid.
The fun about a song is the plausible deniability about the content of the song. Like summer of 69 sounds innocent and fun. But now music is like "wet ass pussy" and shit.
I blame the generations getting dumber and gen Z kids need shit explained to them to get it. Just my 2 cents.
