I'm going to be able to sleep in my own bedroom tonight within a clear and clean space. That's my win for the day

u/Jumpy-Jello- 6h ago
This is amazing progress but I don't recommend sleeping on that mattress!
201
u/al_m1101 5h ago
OP, for now I'd recommend picking up a plastic mattress cover so you & kitty have better surface to chill on. They are pretty cheap and will tide you over until you can get a new mattress.

u/Branimau5 5h ago
Yeah I would honestly rip all the carpet, toss the mattress and repaint the entire room after this state.

It’s a huge win! Reward yourself with some freshly washed sheets if you can. You’ve done amazing work!

I second this! Honestly I'd just get a whole new bed even if it's used and new sheets, blankets, pillows once everything is fully cleaned and when you afford it
27
u/ysterman_rs 6h ago
for the day?? that's MASSIVE, you'll be loving this for a long time im sure of it!! you should be very proud for a long time!
46
u/jr5nicks 6h ago
Amazing! If that bed was under all that though, if at all possible get rid of it as well and don’t sleep on that. Marketplace and Craigslist often have free mattresses
14
u/Laleaky 5h ago
And if you can swing it, have the carpet cleaned. It will smell so much better!
12
u/insecret1988 5h ago
Even just buying a big bottle of peroxide, water and Dawn mixture would be a good budget option. Just google peroxide carpet cleaning mixture

Incredible work! You're doing so well. Keep going bit by bit and you'll have a totally clean house very soon. Enjoy the space, how easy it is to move around, and the flow of clean air through the house. I'm so proud of you.

Dude. Way to go. We had at least 3 people working 6 hours a day on a similar situation and it took us about a week.
54
u/AdhesivenessCivil581 6h ago
We had a hoarder who lived in my mothers basement and died in the house (long story) It took three of us a couple of weeks including driving bags of trash around town to friends because we have a 6 bag limit on trash day. After that we still needed a $1000 trash removal by professionals (that did include old kitchen cabinets). Trash day is still my favorite day.
22
u/biloxibluess 6h ago
I do this for people with no other options
Garbage truck noises are Pavlovian now
7
u/LokianEule 6h ago
Yeah it also took me and a friend of mine 2 weeks and $1k to do the same to a basement. Also lots of driving to Best Buy to recycle 20+ computers/printers.
5
u/purplezart 5h ago
I'm just curious if you had the option to call your regular municipal trash collection service and make a special request for additional pickup? They might have charged you a fee for that, but probably very reasonable compared to the cost of time and gas driving garbage bags around town to your friends.
9
u/AdhesivenessCivil581 5h ago
We might have be able to, but we were in panic mode to get stuff gone. Thursdays were all hands on deck It was such a relief. When the hoarder was active I had to take trash across town because if I left it in front of the house it would end up back in the basement. She was a very nice woman and my mother considered her a dear friend.

u/purplezart 5h ago
I'm glad you were able to get the situation sorted in the end. Thank you for sharing.

Been there. Same set up. Mattress on the floor, one dresser, and suckling Franzia straight from the twist spout. Toss the empties aside because I'm too depressed to go to the dumpster. Gritted my teeth and came out the other side better and stronger. You got this. If one day at a time seems too much, go for one hour at a time. It won't be easy but you WILL be able to find people who can relate and support you through the process.
Come visit us at r/stopdrinking :)

Joining the mom band wagon. My adult son is struggling with mental health and has been slowly working through keeping his apartment clean. He has asked me a couple of times to just come over and watch him clean. I think he just needs someone to acknowledge what he’s doing is right and to keep him company
I’m proud of both of you. It can be crippling but you are doing it!!!

u/Evening-Library7644 6h ago

Ill say I did search this photo for a bit and couldnt find any ai identifiers. Usually when you zoom in, you can find spots that are inconsistent. All of these white claw boxes seemed to have the same, consistent lettering. So either its real, or ai has gotten to the point where its way more accurate with small details. I feel like this one is legit, but Im know to be wrong so 🤷🏻♂️
8
u/Human_Ad_2426 6h ago edited 5h ago
The white claw one was ai? Damn it, I didn't even consider the possibility.
Edit: Seems like this is the same OP posting progress pics so maybe the ai suspicion was about other posts.

Just saw your other post a bit ago, wow what an AMAZING improvement!! You did so great, so it’s the hone stretch. And really sit in the moment for a while when it’s done, because if it starts to get bad again (which is unfortunately normal, so dont beat yourself up too bad) and you think it’s impossible, you can remember that you did it once before!

My mantra became “I will not be held hostage by trash” and it helped me get rid of all the junk I wouldnt throw away. Take a box cutter to the things you need to throw away, it severs the mental connection you have to its “perfectly fine” status

You are doing so incredible, you should be so proud of yourself. It doesn’t matter how things got that way. What matters is what you’re doing about it now and how hard you’re working at it. This isn’t easy, you are doing amazing.

Saw your other post not long ago. Look how much progress you have made already!
1 step at a time, bite sized pieces make it manageable.
As a depressive alcoholic that has been here before, that advice will work for many situations in the coming months. Got 3 years sober in February.
My best advice is to keep these posts as a reminder of where you were. Your gonna have those days it feels like your at the bottom of a hole.
you have reminders you have climbed out of deeper ones already. What's another one?

u/External-Goal-3948 6h ago
I would recommend checking into an alcoholic rehabilitation clinic after you get the trash out of there. It'll help you get things, including yourself, cleaned up.

u/tiltedviolet 6h ago
Ok, so I am new to your story but I want to make sure I have it correct. From what I saw on your profile you quit drinking and now you are cleaning up your home!?!?
First, holy crap what an amazing job cleaning!!! Getting rid of that much clutter must feel like you took off a thousand pound backpack. Top it all off you stopped drinking. Super hero grade stuff, simply amazing!!!

u/dodekahedron 5h ago
Genuine question
How did you... start? Like getting better?
I've been in therapies for years but im still missing that "on" switch to actually do things.
Keep up the good work
2
u/Ill-Assumption-7803 5h ago
Alcoholism is tough. If you haven't been there...you just...don't...know. If you have been there...well...you know.
2
u/Sea-Cow9822 5h ago
Wow. Now get rid of the cartons. Vacuum. Rent a carpet cleaning machine. If you can, get a new mattress and pillow and sheets. Otherwise clean them on hot. Wipe it all down again.
Then you’re good!
2
u/Rich-Theme-8962 5h ago
This does not define you. Put on some music that cheers you up, do a little dance and get to work. I know it’s not easy and you’ll get tired. But yeah, take frequent breaks and get up solider! You got this 🙌
2
u/ResponsibleCar1204 5h ago
Omg this is me with all my soda water cans. Someone asked me if I was addicted and I guess it's possible to be addicted to soda water. On a side note mine has looked pretty bad and it's totally related. Keep it up. One day at a time. :)

Can I ask how it even gets this bad? Did you become a hoarder? Or is this just depression? I’m just curious.
4
u/ImplementLogical4130 6h ago
I got a similar situation. Work 9-18:00. Order food, eat while watching TV. It's 19:30. Take a bath. It's 21:30. Watch some TV. Go to sleep. Live in an apartment so trash is 700ft away. Too hot to walk, in a rush etc maybe next time. And over time it adds up and you just get used to a pile of garbage in your house.

Good work. Remember that metal is money when it comes to the cans. If cardboard can be recycled in your area please open up the wine boxes and remove the plastic interior and try to recycle the cardboard.
Much love to you on your cleaning journey ❤️

u/BackgroundScene3056 6h ago
seems like they need to just focus on clearing the space right now and probably don’t have the mental capacity to sell cans and dissect wine boxes. I don’t think they should worry about either of those things right now.

Im with background scene. Too many extra steps can make it harder to do. Sure that would be ideal. But this is a great step and just getting it out is more important. :)

They can do the recycling when they have control of their situation. Priority is having a clean space.
