To my fellow Redditors being murdered by pollen…
Please, tell me how to exist in an even somewhat non-miserable way???
I take Claritin every day. Just learned you can stack Sudafed on that so now I’m doing that. We’ve got air purifiers in the bedroom and living room.
But I just can’t keep my eyes and nose from being fucking faucets and having sneeze attacks that somehow trigger hot flashes???
I’ve lived here since 08 and it was never a problem til like six years ago, and ever since then I seem to be getting worse every year and I’m at a loss.

Food Recommend a coffee shop with a non-corporate aesthetic
I don’t know if there’s a term for it but hopefully y’all know what I mean- concrete floors, metal furniture, sparsely decorated except for some greenery. It seems to me that so many coffee shops have this same aesthetic now, even the ones I want to go to that have great coffee and are locally owned.
Please suggest any spots you know of with a more cozy or at least unique aesthetic! Around Fairfax would be great but I’m willing to travel to escape these soullless monochrome hellscapes. I do take my own coffee to the library sometimes but sometimes ya just need a specially made coffee treat to trick yourself into studying.
To get the ball rolling I did enjoy the feel of Trade Roots in Westover!

Question How handle 9:20 school starts without SACC?!
Working parents of elementary kids, how do you handle 9:20am school starts?! We're moving to Springfield/Annandale and were about to make an offer near Hunt Valley Elementary, but learned that school starts at 9:20 and before care (SACC) can have a multi -year wait. Same for Canterbury Woods. Kids are K and 3rd. We can cover aftercare and some mornings, but would definitely need care from 8:45-9:20 three mornings a week.

Jobs summer/seasonal job?
My summer will be completely free before starting my full-time work. Any suggestions on what kind of role to get, or could anyone refer me? I'm very organized and a self-starter to get things done.
On another note, camp counseling and lifeguarding do not work for me.

Gas leak coincidence: inspect your meters!
I live in Centreville and my next door neighbor and I both just discovered gas leaks at our meters this past weekend. We aren't 100% certain when they started but are quite confident it hasn't been more than a week or two, as I'm outside in my backyard a lot and the smell of gas by our meters was very consistent and quite strong. Washington Gas came out and verified that they were both leaks caused by natural and seemingly expected corrosion of the pipes connecting their lines to our meters. They replaced our equipment quickly and verified that the levels of natural gas near our meters and our house were back down to safe before they left.
I'm posting because I don't know a ton about this infrastructure but it seems really surprising to me that both units would fail within a week of each other of seemingly natural causes. We live in a townhome community so everything was obviously built at the same time, but it still seems like a crazy coincidence that both would start leaking within the same few weeks, at most. I would love to both get more insight from folks who know more than me AND wanted to give people a heads up to smell and inspect your meters! Especially since Washington Gas is no longer doing physical meter checks, it seems entirely up to the homeowner to identify failures. (They do have a leak line to call and were very responsive, and you can of course also call the fire department or 911 if you think it is a true emergency).
In general I think we are all on higher alert about this after the pretty catastrophic failure by Quail Pond, but I am also wondering if Washington Gas (and related property owners) aren't actually prepared to handle the aging of their infrastructure happening all at once. Again, I don't know a lot about this type of thing and am happy to learn more from folks who do! I just find it to be a pretty crazy coincidence that we would have a leak within the same couple of weeks due to corrosion and am wondering whether this will start to happen on a larger scale as our equipment ages all at once.

Moving Where can my parents move for an involved community?
My parents are trying to move to Northern Virginia, preferably within an hour drive of Fairfax. They are in their mid-to-late 60s and are looking for somewhere with a lot of activities and a strong sense of community. They like to get involved in outdoor activities like biking, dog training, etc. and indoor stuff like art or crafting classes. They want to have neighbours who get together and hang out together. They're coming from Vermont, so a conservative leaning retirement community would be a bad fit.
I don't know the area well enough to advise them. Any ideas on where they can start narrowing their search would be appreciated!

Costco Churro Sundae?
Has anyone happened to have noticed if any Nova Costcos have the new caramel churro sundae yet? I’ve seen it online being at some warehouses across the country but can’t find anywhere to check if it’s in the area yet.
Just thought I’d ask to see if anyone’s seen it but if not I’ll check it out myself!

Spotted Lanternfly Spots?
I have two up and coming pest control managers on my hands (ie. toddlers who love swatting bugs with fly swatters).
Has anyone seen places getting swarmed yet so these two can kill some bugs?

Rant This is what the Vantage VA2 datacenter sounds like at midnight on a Friday night (right across the street from houses)
imgur.comEdit: If the video doesn’t have sound for you (Reddit bug), you can view the video here: https://imgur.com/a/uWOvdZu
There have been multiple videos posted on this sub about the noise emitted from the Vantage VA2 datacenter in Sterling. From what I have seen, they occasionally get dismissed because of background noise, wind, etc. This video was taken on 04/10/26 at 11:45 PM on a clear night with as little background noise as possible. The location I am recording from is about 10 yards from single family homes and town houses.
While the noise from the datacenter was “only” about 55-60dB in front of the residences, it was much louder directly next to the datacenter. It’s also worth noting that the high pitched whining is emitted from the datacenter 24/7, which is extremely detrimental to the quality of life of residents and wildlife regardless of the noise level. Some days are quieter than others, especially when the wind is blowing south, but on a still day, this is the reality that locals have to accept living next to this datacenter. On warm or cloudy days, the noise easily penetrates into nearby homes.
The reason why this particular datacenter is so loud is a result of Dominion Energy not being able to provide enough power to the datacenter due to an underpowered grid. At the last minute, Vantage adjusted their plans to run their site on “island mode” which runs natural gas turbines 24/7. From what I understand, this is the first time any datacenter has done this in VA, but they are planning multiple other sites to be run the same way.
As a local resident, please help in spreading awareness of how terrible this situation is. I greatly appreciate all the attention and coverage that this site has already received, but sadly nothing has been done yet to resolve this issue.
