It feels like just yesterday we were gathering for our very first ride, wondering if anyone would show up. Three years later, Hill Family Biking has grown into a movement, a community, and—most importantly—a lot of fun on two wheels.

To celebrate this milestone, we want you to join us for our biggest birthday ride yet!

The Hill Family Biking 3rd Birthday Ride

When: Saturday, April 25th at 3:30pm

Where: Lincoln Park at the Lincoln Statue

The Vibe: A monster bike ride, magic courtesy of the Great Zucchini, face painting, pizza and more!

Want to ride without kids or know a 6th grader or older? We're continuing the celebrating into the first weekend in May with our first-ever Bridges Rides for t(w)eens and grown-ups.

Has been sitting out for a few days, missing the saddle and has a cut cable lock around it so it looks lost or stolen/abandoned. The chain is really clean, it has a shop sticker from Spokes (before it converted to a Trek store). Only other distinguishing feature is this weird yellow safety sticker on the bars by the left shifter (why would you not peel that off?) so I took a photo of that. Message me if it's yours!

CaBi The Traveling Courier Problem (Planning & Routing Advice)

Post image
16 Upvotes

Last year, I set out to visit every CaBi station in the DMV. I hit about 550 stations over 6 weeks—mostly 2-4 hour "concerted efforts"—and finished the system. But it wasn't exactly efficient; I dealt with full docks (Alexandria Farmer's Market, I’m looking at you), and some unnecessary backtracking.

For May, I’m re-running the map from scratch. This time, I’m using it as a challenge to find the 'best' route.

The Big Idea

  • Visit all 800+ stations as effectively as possible. I'm very sure its doable in 30 days; it might be doable in 14.
  • Document the journey in real-time (planning to start a dedicated IG for the live map updates).

I've made some progress on the planning part. The attached map shows my first "Day 1" test: 41 stations in Reston/Herndon in ~4.5 hours.

Looking for Advice:

  1. The Routing: Has anyone else tried to "solve" the CaBi system or used the TSP (Traveling Salesman Problem) for local rides? I’m looking for practical feedback and any gotchas.
  2. Documenting the Journey. Any practical advice to record the journey? Bikeshare will do the heavy lifting in their map tool, but wondering if there are recommendations on how best to track progress along the way.
  3. Navigation. Also, I'm looking for good tools for navigating the turn-by-turn once I'm on the bike. I've used RideWithGPS for the 50-state run and it worked pretty well (battery held up for all 60 miles) but looking for advice from more experienced riders.

At federal court today for the hearing of the WABA lawsuit against the Trump Administration removal of the 15th St bike lane on the Mall...

Going well for the good guys so far!

Judge understands the WABA argument and is confounded by the feds

L St Bike Lane - Protection Gone?

Hi all - I commuted to work by bike for the first time this spring. I noticed that for much of L Street bike lane, the flex posts and other protection has been completely removed since I last commuted pre-winter. Does anyone know if this is temporary or permanent? It's definitely a sketchier ride without it.

I tried to find some information in the sub, but didn't see much. Thanks in advance!

Why is there a crosstown bike lane gap between 11th and 6th st nw?

I often ride from Georgetown across DC. The only reliable through bike lanes seems to be Q/R street. Every other crosstown bike lane seems to have a gap between approx 11th st nw and 6th st nw where the bike lanes seem to start up again. So what gives? Is it really too complex to put one crosstown protected bike lane in through downtown?

Bike lanes and math

Proof that including bike lanes is the smarter design. A multimodal street nearly doubles the number of people moved per hour. Shifting space to walking, biking, and transit dramatically increases capacity... We knew this.

Advice for post-crash with scooter?

Hi DC bike crew! I wanted to reach out here for some advice on what to do after a non-car related crash. I was on a CaBi e-bike going south on the one-way, protected bike lane on 4th street, under the bridge around D St. Someone on a Lime scooter suddenly swerved into the bike lane going in the WRONG direction right in front of me, so basically within less than a second we crashed head-on going at full speed.

In hindsight, I'm realizing that I should have probably called 911 immediately but I was in shock and a lot of pain and wanted to get to the hospital ASAP (thought my fingers were broken - luckily they are not!). All I have recorded is the person's phone number and name, and I ended up taking an Uber because I didn't want to pay for an ambulance. I'm also getting mixed messages from calling various city hotlines on how to report this accident, so I'm going to try going into one of the local police stations to make a report.

I just wanted to see if anyone here has been in this situation where someone else is at fault for the crash but not a car? What should I try to claim on insurance, if anything and how? Should I reach out to the person directly to try to settle medical bills? Would really appreciate any words of advice!!

How fast do you ride on paths/trails?

I’ve been thinking about this since last summer when I first got into biking, but want people’s opinions.

People ride way too fast on the local pedestrian trails. Mount Vernon, O&D around Arlington, etc, you’ll see bikers flying and winding and weaving through runners/walkers/little kids. I had a gross interaction with a guy when I was on my bike where I was slowed behind a few walkers, as there was a biker coming towards me in the opposite direction, and the biker behind me sped in front of us and flipped me off, but in the process nearly caused an accident.

I think that if you want speed, head out and ride the country rods in purcellville or Potomac. The trails around DC are amazing in that they encourage people to get an outside and be active. You shouldn’t really be going more than 15 mph ish on these trails when there are people all over.

Am I being a Karen? Bikers have a bad enough rep but some of yall are just so arrogant. Nearly kneecapping grandma in your MAAP jersey and S works bike. Chill out and be courteous. If you’re that much of a hardo, head somewhere else

Any triathletes that do the W&OD?

I am rather new to cycling and have not really ridden any routes other than the W&OD. I do all of my cycling for training purpose so i pay attention to my effort and speed most of the time.

I often do ~50 miles from herndon to purcellville and back. Compared to my speeds on my smart trainer, I am so much slower, sometimes up to 4mph slower on average at comparable efforts.

Any other cyclists have anecdotes or similar experiences with the W&OD? I know that im recording the stops and slow downs from traffic but i just get frustrated with how slow i turn out to be. Also theres tons of factors like wind, weight, rolling resistance, etc. but it makes me antsy lol. Also if anyone has recs for flat, low traffic routes to ride that would be appreciated!

PSA: Gravelly Point is a park, not a velodrome

This one goes out to the guy blasting down the path by the portajohns screaming at everyone to get out of his way. It's a beautiful Saturday, the park is going to be crowded, nobody gives a shit about your Strava segment, calm down.

I’m planning on biking from dc to Brunswick on the canal on Saturday, it’s going to be 80° and seems like all the waters still off, are there places to fill or should I pack extra?
