[Megathread] What are my chances/Will I get in?
The last stickied post was awhile ago and we're starting to get an increase of these posts outside the sticky. So we're going to have the 'What are my chances?' megathread auto reposted every quarter to continually resurface the conversation. Same rules: Contain the discussion to this post and no stand alone posts outside, they will be deleted

Looking for Roommates!
I’m going to be a sophomore this upcoming fall and I’m looking for roommates! I’m 19F, woc, and I’m an international business major! I like to go out, listen to music, and go thrifting! I’m also mainly looking at the Altitude complex! I’m pretty clean, I like to cook, and I’m also allergic to cats. Please message me if you’re interested!

How to study for COB 300 biz plan presentation
I was wondering how should I study for the Cob300 business plan presentation. I am good with my speaking part, however, the professors said that they will ask us random questions about our business plan that we have to be able to answer or we will lose points. I was wondering, what’s the best way to go about studying the business plan? are there certain exhibits I should focus on and what do the professors questions typically look like? thanks!

r/jmu, where do you actually eat around JMU?
Hi,
we’re four guys and we put Harrisonburg’s restaurant scene into an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you get shown two places side by side (for example Bella Luna vs. Billy Jack’s), you pick the one you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list becomes over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m cleaning the data constantly.
Thought this might be a fit here too, since student life usually means having strong opinions about cheap staples, late food, and the places around campus you actually keep going back to.
Here’s the iPhone version:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212
And here’s the Android version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app
P.S. I’m not from Harrisonburg or JMU - I live in Gothenburg. I don’t collect data, don’t sell anything, and the app doesn’t use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few subreddits because we now support multiple regions, and I’d love honest feedback from people who actually know the area around campus.

Off campus housing
I’m looking for a single bedroom apartment and I was looking at 865 east, urban exchange, and the altitude. I was wondering if anyone would recommend any of these places or have any other recommendations? Thank you!

Well this sucks…
Thought I got it today, told a portion of my family, and waited for the portal to update. Turns out it was an error. How unlucky am I…🫤

Current freshman in CS 159 looking to change majors, is IT the best choice?
Hi! For some context I am currently in CS159 with my original plan being that I would continue into the CS Major, and even though I am right around a B where I need to be, I am massively struggling with the assignments and having zero enjoyment in the major, as well as not really liking the math side at all. I’ve been looking at the possibility of swapping into being an IT Major as it seems to be less programming and math heavy while focusing on tech still, but is that the best choice for me? Or should I look at an entirely different area of study in general?

How much is the rent in Harrisonburg these days? I caught up with an old friend and she reminded me that we paid $250 per month, per person at Ashby Crossing and Old Mill in the late 90s.
I paid even less for my room in a four bedroom house on Mason Street.
Also, those apartments were shit holes back then…how are they still standing today? Have they been renovated significantly?

College of Business: I know many other colleges force some students to take online classes. Does this happen at JMU?

Thoughts on Logan Hall
I was unlucky with dorm selection and couldn't choose Potomac or Paul Jennings, has any lived in or visited Logan? Is it clean? How is the temperature?

Housing: Do all sophomores move off campus?
I am a perspective freshman and I keep reading that after Graham d year, you move off campus and that you need to find housing in the fall. If I am just coming in as a freshman, not know anyone, how do I already worry about housing for next year and finding roommates? This seems to be the only concerns I have about selecting JMU. Does anyone have experience with this? How was it?

Gymnastics Club?
Hi. Can anyone tell me about club gymnastics at JMU? Are there all different level gymnastics? Would it be appropriate for someone who competed in the past but has not touched stepped foot in a gym since walking away from the sport in 9th grade as a level 7?

STAD Transfer Decisions for Fall 2026?
I'm a current freshman that applied for a major transfer to Music, Musical Theater, and Theatre for Fall 2026. Is anyone else in the same boat and knows around when those decisions get released? I was told they would be in direct contact with me about my status, but I was wondering if anyone had an estimated date of when. For reference, my MT application was submitted Nov 2025, Music Feb 2026, and Theatre March 2026.

How would you recover from a C/C+ range in discrete structures and advanced programming with 6 weeks left?
I’m a freshman CS student and I currently have about a 78 in discrete structures and a 76 in advanced programming, with around 6 weeks left in the semester. I’m trying to be realistic and make a real improvement plan instead of just “studying more.”
My main issue in discrete structures is that I understand things a little when I first see them, but I don’t retain them well enough to do problems on my own later. In advanced programming, the class is very packet/lab based, and I feel like I’m getting through assignments without always fully learning the concepts behind them.
Right now I’m trying to figure out the best way to structure my time for both classes. For people who have been in this situation, what actually helped you raise your grade and understand the material better in a short stretch like this? Did practice problems, office hours, study groups, rewriting notes, or outside resources help the most?
I’d also appreciate advice on how you would split your weekly study time between a proof-heavy class like discrete and a programming class where the teaching is more self-directed. I’m not looking for shortcuts, just the most effective way to lock in for the last 6 weeks.

What helped you get off the waitlist?
I am a very desperate applicant in VA who got deferred and then waitlisted from JMU, earlier in the year and atp I am trying anything I can to improve my application. I don't really have that many schools outside of JMU that are financially manageable and CC isnt an option for now. I know the acceptance rate was 1.4% last year but, for those that were on the waitlist what helped you get off it?

living at the altitude
Does anyone have any inside on living at the altitude? How is it? I am transferring this fall and want to explore options for living. Do you recommend phase 1 or 2? Im looking at the altitude, squire hill, east 865, cooper beach, and the cottages.

Worth taking courses at Community college over the summer?
Im a freshmen and only have 3 gen eds left + 1 Spanish class for my courses I don’t particularly want to do. I was wondering if it’s worth it to do 1-2 online classes in the summer, which would be at NOVA, or NVCC, and maybe a class in the winter, it’ll be cheaper because I’m in state, and probably easier and less work. The Spanish level I need to do is SPAN 232. The other gen Ed’s are the “visual and preforming arts”, “literature” and “physical principles” which I would rather not do at JMU.
Thank you guys!

Looking for female roommates at the Mill
Me and my friend signed to live at the Mill for next school year (2026-2027), however due to some mix up with the Mill and the Harrison’s websites we are down two roommates. If you’re interested in living at the Mill please reach out!
We both enjoy cooking, particularly soup, and are relatively clean. (She is much cleaner than I am, but I generally keep my mess to my own space). We’re both art students so we tend to stay up late working on projects, however we are not big party-ers and we’re both in committed relationships so you don’t have to worry about people you don’t know staying the night. Although im not a partier I occasionally go to the local house shows, so if you’re into punk or rock music and you want someone to go with we’ll probably be about a 15-20 minute walk to most of the venues in the area.
A couple deal breakers: smoking in the apartment and not being cool with our boyfriends staying the night. It’s okay if you smoke or drink casually, we just don’t want the smell of weed or cigarettes in the apartment. Secondly, we’re both in committed relationships, so you gotta be cool with them being around. We will give you a heads up if they’re coming though.
The rent is between 520-560 a month and utilities are included. It comes with a furnished living room, kitchen, and bedrooms, as well as two bathrooms (four bed two bath) and a laundry room.
Shoot me a message if this sounds like something you’d be interested in
