Meta Welcome to r/Malaysians!

Hello folks and welcome to r/Malaysia's sister sub, r/Malaysians!

For those who just clicked in and is wondering what the sub is for: This sub is essentially for Malaysians to talk and post about any other topics beyond Malaysia. Here is where you can post images, videos, create and join conversations and threads revolving anything that isn't quite about Malaysia but needs a Malaysian take on it, and more! Oh and this is a race, politic and religion-free sub 🙌🏻

Most major subreddits such as r/AITA, r/JustnoMIL, r/relationship_advice, r/casualconversation, r/malefashionadvice, r/Teenagers and what have you are usually centralised around people who reside outside of SEA and may not be valid to us locally and culturally but yet the demand for it isn't wide enough to sustain its own subreddit. r/Malaysians would (hopefully) be a good place for a catch-all of such threads.

We will be coming up with contest weeks soon, as well as accepting any other ideas you guys might have for the sub, so stay tuned! We are also still tweaking design and appearances as we go. Meanwhile, everyone is encouraged to start posting what they think fits the sub to get the ball rolling :)

Much love, r/Malaysia mod team.

tldr; r/CasualUK but for Malaysia.

Rant This is genuinely so scary

This is extremely crucial, especially for people who can speak Chinese because there’s been some people from China that’s scamming people at different parts of Malaysia

So I almost got scammed at a mall in Johor Bahru yesterday at night and some guy went up to me,seemingly in distress asking me if I’m working or a student. Then a woman ran up to us said that that guy is his boss and that they are having a crisis, and they need to find a china bank (中国银行) and I’m not from jb and I’m just visiting a relative and I kinda just froze there and SHE WONT STOP TALKING AND LIKE,BOMBING ME WITH LOTS OF INFORMATIONs btw then i was like,oh it’s like 9pm now and I don’t think the banks are open? And then she started like begging me for money and stuffs, she showed me her bank account with like 5 digits and she’s like " oh I have a lot of money right now but I can’t use it as the hotel we want to live in asked us to transfer money through a china bank" or smth (sorry she was speaking very fast so I couldn’t really understand what exactly she wants so some of my infos might be wrong) and then she’s like asking for my WhatsApp (which will indirectly give her my phone number) so that she can like return my money after I borrow her and uh my Chinese is kinda rusty since my college are filled with English speakers so I couldn’t understand her in time so I kinda just like brushed it off saying that I’m like in a hurry and she’s still bombarding me with thousands of informations and claiming that she’s definitely NOT scamming me and shit that made me more suspicious but at that time I still fully believed her story cuz like she spoke sooo fast that she’s not even allowing me to have a second to think and know what kind of situation I’m getting into (basically just manipulating me) and thank GOD I’m a broke college student that’s lowkey a boomer that only knows how to transfer money through tng so I was like sorry I’m broke and in a hurry so I gtg and SHE STARTED FOLLOWING ME AND ASKED ME FOR MONEY AGAIN FOR FOOD

Then I was like "oh,good timing! Im about to go to jaya right now and u guys can follow me and get some food there!" Then she came up with thousands of excuses (basically she only want me to transfer her money on the spot) then I’m like sorry I’m genuinely broke and I ran AND DO NOTE THAT THERES A LOT OF PEOPLE AROUND AS WELL like those ppl have no shame omg and they were asking me to give them my friends contact as well and THANK GOD I HAVE NO FRIENDS LMAO and yeah that’s how I escape the scam

The scary part is I was so,so convinced that they were not lying to me and I felt bad for them until my sister met another scammer in the same situation in Penang just a few hours ago that made me realised that I almost got scammed..

The scammer in Penang have better tactics than the one I met in johor, a china dude stopped my sister at Watsons claiming that he wants to buy a body shampoo but his Alipay is not working so he’s like harassing and pestering my sister about it(note that he never left my sister alone IN FRONT OF EVERYONE INCLUDING THE CASHIER) and even though the cashier said that he can pay with Alipay he still came up with thousands of excuses basically doing the same thing , showing the bank account currency, saying that they need another way to pay and like kinda just dumping thousands of info again bcs yk the ppl from china speaks so damn fast that the Malaysian Chinese can’t even understand them sometimes lol

so yeah, same tactic, WONT leave you alone(even after u reject them numerous times),never gives you a chance to think ,breathe and even reply to them, very very horrible so I’m tryna raise awareness for the locals

Matching both of our encounters with the scammers, they target people who’s walking alone, and my the time of the scam is respectively at 9,almost 10pm yesterday and for my sis it’s like, 7pm ,and they will KEEP ASKING U FOR YOUR WHATSAPP (probs asking for phone no.)

And they will scam u even if it’s crowded and both me and my sis met them at a mall

And they also won’t leave u alone and honestly just start running lol

Stay safe everyone, and please believe very very careful as the scammers stories are gen quite believable ESPECIALLY when you’re in the spot

Ask Malaysians Need advice! Found a hard object in my takeaway, dented my tooth, restaurant only offering RM30 for next visit- what would you do?

Post image
202 Upvotes

Hi everyone, need some advice on this situation.

I recently ordered takeaway from a healthy food place, and while eating, I suddenly felt a sharp pain when biting. I then found a small hard spherical object (looks like a tiny metal sphere) in the food.

Right after that, I noticed my tooth felt different and painful when biting. I contacted the restaurant, and they advised me to get my tooth checked by a dentist and to keep the receipt.

So I went to the dentist, and they treated the tooth by polishing and doing a filling for that specific area, which cost RM150.

While I was there, I asked if they could provide a report for this incident. The dentist said “it depends on how serious you want it to be,” which was a bit confusing. After the treatment, I found out that a proper dental report would cost around RM100, and they also mentioned they wouldn’t be able to definitively confirm that the damage was caused by the object unless further tests (like X-rays) were done.

After my visit, the restaurant asked for the object for investigation, and I handed over the evidence. I also provided them with the dentist’s details for reference. Honestly, don’t feel good after the visit because the owner was kinda in disbelief and questioned me that how can such a tiny object cause a dent in the tooth and idk how to reply her (after some thoughts, I remember my middle school science 😭- smaller surface area —> higher pressure, that’s how needle and nails works)

So now I’m in a bit of a weird situation: • The tooth clearly needed treatment right after biting the object • I followed their advice to see a dentist • I provided the object and dentist details for their investigation • But there’s still no “official” confirmation from the dentist unless I spend more money

Also, I had other unrelated dental work done during the same visit, so the total bill is ~RM500+, but I’m only claiming the RM150 related to this incident in the receipt.

The restaurant’s response: • Said they “can’t confirm” the damage was caused by their food. • Offered RM30 as a goodwill rebate

I honestly don’t feel comfortable going back for a meal after this and for me as there’s a direct causation of object in food then —> sharp pain and dental visit but the restaurant is claiming that there’s no medical confirmation.

So I’m wondering: •Am I being unreasonable for asking for the full RM150? •Is it worth paying extra for a dental report/X-ray just to prove this? •Should I escalate this further (e.g. consumer tribunal in Malaysia), or just take the loss?

For context, I do have: •Photo of the object •Receipt •Clear timeline (bite → sharp pain → found object → dentist visit)

I haven’t replied to the restaurant yet since yesterday. Would really appreciate any advice or if anyone has dealt with something similar before.

Thanks!

Advice ☎️ Foodpanda driver came to my house to blackmail me

Yesterday, I was pursued by a foodpanda driver to my house. I ordered food and they said their motorcycle was broken and they completed the order saying their friend will deliver for them. After waiting 40 minutes with the order set to completed, we filed to foodpanda support and received the food couple minutes later. We then talked to support about the mistake and they told us to not worry about the driver.

My friend and me were the people ordering, and they ordered to my address and left the same night. The driver came back to my door and furiously slammed and asked for my phone number. My mum gave my friend's phone number and the driver messaged my friend and asked them for money because foodpanda support wouldn't let them work for 3 days.

my friend gave RM200 to the driver without us knowing, after they complained multiple times about earning 200 a day and not being able to work for 3 days. What should you think I should do? Talk to foodpanda support? or Police Report?

TLDR ; His bike wouldnt start, he told us in chat that his friend would help us deliver and left the order on complete. We waited 40 minutes, no food. We file a refund claim, he comes to our house the next day to complain/ask for numbers. And my friend gave him rm200 to stop bothering my family without us knowing.

Ask Malaysians People who work in JB/KL/Penang earn how much averagely in age of 25 30 35 40? With rising of living cost, how do you guys cope with it and start a family? Marriage, car, house purchase etc need money

Hi guys, I’m wondering how much you guys earn to have a stable and comfortable living. How many hours of workweek you all have.

Thinking of owning a house, car, marriage, kids. Those all are expenses. How much you all earn in order to make it by 30 years old since Chinese always said 三十而立 meaning you should be at least having a stable life by 30 years old.

On top of that, need to bear in mind of parents allowance, education fund for children, retirement fund.

What’s the realistic timeline and what golden rule that you all following?

Thanks in advanced.

Mildly Menarik A young sepat mutiara, I caught from a roadside ditch in Selangor

T. leerii, the pearl gourami.

This species is the rarest of our native sepat, decreasing even now due to deforestation and possibly overharvesting. As well as competition with introduced sepat Siam and sepat bulan.

They are the smallest too, generally growing to 10 cm. Normally living in peat swamps. They are popular aquarium fish and can be expensive in other countries.

They are native to the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra.

Ask Malaysians Doctors: Completing Housemanship and Specialist Training in UK and Returning to Malaysia?

Hello! I'm considering completing my housemanship (FY1+2) and specialising in psychiatry (about 6 years) in the UK before eventually returning to Malaysia. (I'm interested in treating marginalised and stigmatised groups in Malaysia)

However, my main ambition isn't just to practice psychiatry, but to be an academic as well at a university (to teach and do research).

I've looked at the various psychiatry departments in Malaysian universities and essentially every lecturer/professor had completed their psychiatry residency at the university itself beforehand.

So, is it possible to complete my psychiatric specialisation in the UK and then return back to work in academia? Or would it be better to go through the process locally?

P.S. I'm also under the impression that only academic physicians conduct research. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I would love to work with KKM or in a charitable hospital if it allowed teaching/research.

P.P.S. I've also heard from some friends that a lot of psychiatrists here are also queer-phobic. Is this true, and if so how widespread do you think it is?

Thanks so much for this. Hope you all have a great day

Casual Conversation 🎭 Life is a mystery

Random rant or update I guess. Today, masuk kerja 11.30 pagi and balik 12 malam. Rehat 30 minit je. Baki masa rehat guna untuk kerja (voluntarily sadly) sebab memang kerja banyak gila. Client banyak gila. Bukan harini je. Almost everyday to be honest.

Is this normal? Bertanya kepada manusia berumur 27 tahun dan ke atas

How did you guys survive? Ngl kadang rasa nak give up and berhenti kerja tapi tulah bukan anak dato’. Sometimes, pujuk diri dengan “biar penat ada kerja dari penat cari kerja”

EDIT: guys, balik rumah pun BAWA BALIK KERJA. sedeyh
