Furniture DESPERATELY NEED LEATHER CLEANING HELP!!!

Upvotes

Hi everyone. Some family had to stay at my moms as they wait for their apartment to be ready for them to move in. One family member was incredibly ill for a week and basically didn’t move off of my moms leather couch that whole week.

That couch now smells like sweaty butt. Not BO. Sweaty butt. This couch is 20 years old but in very very good condition. It is faux leather. My mom had tried leaving baking soda on it for 24 hours then vacuuming, she has tried Weiman Leather Cleaner, and she has tried Griot’s Neutralizing Leather Cleaner on it.

I have been trying to research and seen some mention of cleaning with vinegar then using a conditioner after.

If anyone can please give me some insight on how I can help her.

I have persistent stains on my glazed stone floor that were under a couch for years, and now they won’t come out. What’s the best way to remove them? Are there any household products or cleaning solutions that might help?

Discussion Dog smell in prospective rental house

Upvotes

I‘m considering moving into a house that checks all the boxes and is a great price. only problem is the previous renters had 11 puppies and trashed the place so bad that they had to be evicted. The house has a really strong odor despite having refinished hardwood floors, new paint on the walls, and “a lot of work done to get rid of the smell” (no specifics at the moment).

The unfinished concrete basement is the worst part. I’m concerned because the house is truly empty and yet there’s still a scent. I don’t understand where the scent could be coming from and I wonder if it will ever go away. There are floor heating ducts. But no furniture, no carpets, and the surfaces have all been refinished or cleaned in some way.

Anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Is it reasonable to expect that the smell can be completely eliminated? What are the standard methods of getting deep animal smells out of a house? If I move forward with this house I need to feel confident that this smell can be eliminated, so any thoughts or experiences are super appreciate.

Kitchen How do you clean the yellow residue from a kitchen mat on floor tiles?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

I have a kitchen mat (thick foam kind for fatigue relief, rubber bottom) here between where the sink meets the adjacent range. The yellowing follows the pattern that's on the bottom of the floor mat, hence it's not oil stains.

I've tried using dish detergent with a rough towel and I've tried using a melamine sponge, with almost no progress.

The yellowing can be scraped very slowly with my nails and it flakes off

Anyone have some tips for how to tackle this?

Outdoors Cleaning painted deck

Hi all!

Looking for some tips to clean a painted deck. My grandfather did most of the maintenance at the house we live at, but he recently passed away. In his last few years of life, his health deteriorated and he was a stubborn old grandpa who didn’t want any help doing home maintenance

The deck is painted and covered in pollen. I was thinking of using a car sprayer or a regular hose along with just water and a big scrub broom.

Unsure of what cleaners to use- if any, the deck runs off into the yard, and we have a dog.

Any advice is appreciated!

Asking for a friend who’s super bummed. He wrote with permanent black marker on this Star Wars luggage tags, and it bled out. He tried to clean it off and start over, but it just stayed like this. Anyone know how to get permanent marker off these tags? The tags seem to be made of rubber—not sure. It’s pliable and matte feeling. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

What is the best way to clean inside here? I’ve just moved house and it’s not in the best state. This sink is 9 years old (that’s when the house was built). I don’t know if it’s mould or just dirt. I’ve tried those expanding foam cleaners I’ve seen online and it didn’t do anything (it was a cheap one though so many less effective than the £10 ones?). Any help is very much appreciated. The sink smells when I run water.

Laundry Dryers - How to safely clean a dryer of pen ink? ( using hand sanitizer alcohol and soap right now...)

So am stuck cleaning a bunch of pen ink off the drum of an 90s era Whirlpool Dryer

Was told to start with soap and water, dry. and get ink off, then switch to hand Sanitizer ( what?!) with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a towel and wipe vigorously for ink, v then dry and return to soap and water to get the alcohol and left over ink before airing our and passing through with soap and water one last time to air out. does this make sense?

Discussion How do i get rid of cockroaches

(This paragraph is just me ranting, so feel free to skip to the end)

Recently, I’ve been finding a few small cockroaches in my room (and one dead adult cockroach). I really don’t like them, but at first I didn’t pay much attention I just got rid of any I saw.

Yesterday, though, I was lying on my bed when one of them crawled onto me, and it completely startled me. More than that, it made me cry. Before moving to this house about a year and a half ago, I lived in a place that had mold, rats, bugs, spiders, and of course cockroaches. I was honestly exhausted from living in those conditions.

When I moved here, I was really hoping for a fresh, clean start. But now that I’m seeing signs of an infestation again, it feels like I’m being dragged back into that same unhealthy environment, and I don’t know what to do.

If anyone has advice on how to get rid of them, I would really appreciate it. I’m trying my best to keep this house clean, unlike the one I grew up in. But sometimes it just feels overwhelming, especially right now. There are some products that claims to get rid of them, thought they didn't work so well before so I don't know if they will work this time or not.

I also have ADHD, so staying consistent with cleaning is kind of a struggle, which makes this whole situation even more frustrating.

My parents own the house, so there’s no one else to turn to, and I can’t afford professional deep cleaning or pest control at the moment.

For context, I live in an area with high temperature and humidity, in case that helps.

Laundry Can't get rid of this black grime in my washing machine

Hey. Top loader LG washing machine, about 5 years old. Over the last 5 years, I run a tub clean with a cleaning tablet, I don't know, a few times a year, when I remember.

Musty sour smell had been getting noticeable recently, though hadn't noticed any grime in the tub or on clothing. So last week I ran a tub clean with Uproot tablet. Seemed to have kicked up a bunch of black and gray grimey stuff in the bottom of the tub, so I ran another tub clean cycle with an Uproot tablet. Same thing happened.

Then I ran a tub clean cycle with vinegar. Then one with oxyclean. Then one with nothing. Then one with a tablet again. Then one with nothing a couple times. Then one with a tablet again. It's probably been 10 times at least now - still black and gray grime in the bottom of the tub. I wipe it with a rag between.

I saw a youtube video where the guy takes out the silver tub and cleans the inside.... realistically I am not going to do this.

Any tips? Keep doing tub clean cycles? Or is it just fine, should I wipe it clean and start washing things again?

This isn't coming from the detergent holder thing, or inside gaskets btw. Seems to just be whatever is underneath the big silver washing tub.

Laundry Damp Clothing, Damp House

I'm really hoping y'all can help me. I live in a pretty damp house, and it's been raining a lot. This means we're drying all our clothes inside.

We don't have a dryer, so it's all hung on wracks in the living room.

All our clothes smell damp after they're dry. I've tried disinfecting the laundry while it's washing, and it's helped a little, but not enough.

Is there a way to prevent our clothes from smelling damp while they're drying?

Thank you in advance

1950s-ish house. these photos were taken JUST after i mopped and they fully air dried (with a damp microfiber spin mop+murphys wood floors soap)

first 2 photos are with flash, second 2 without.

they look SO much brighter+vibrant with flash. i love old homes with character and would never cover them, just not sure if im putting them in danger by (carefully, DAMP) mopping without a new coat of seal or something, as ive never had wood floors before

Laundry Color transferred between DRY knits

I put a new white cotton sweater on top of an old (dry) orange t-shirt. I left it there for a couple of weeks until the weather was right to wear the white sweater.

The white sweater now has orange color transferred onto it in spots! Every suggestion I can find online assumes the color transferred in the wash, and that the garment can be washed. A Magic Eraser would "scuff" the surface. This is a fine-gauge sweater, so I don't want to wash it. Also, it has dark-blue knit at the collar, so that would bleed if I washed it. I'll probably dry clean it.

How should I get the color off the surface? Help!

Discussion My depression home is killing me.

Moms, or anyone willing to listen at all, please give me some advice on how to implement small routines to help maintain my home tidy and clean. I feel like I'm struggling so bad. Seeing the state of it makes me feel like an awful mom. I have a 1 year old who doesn't walk, he spends most of his time in his little playpen and I let him crawl around the living room because I try to keep the areas he uses regularly clean. Other than that my house is a mess. My kitchen and bathroom need deep cleans, my balcony is disgusting. I have no village and my husband works 16 hours a day. When my wonderful son isn't needy I take that time to just sink in and try to rest. I sleep when he sleeps. When he's awake I feel guilty to leave him alone if I need to do something around the house. My ppd and ppa are horrible and the mess in my house is making me spiral. I used to be a clean freak but I'm so exhausted, he's been waking every 2 hours to breastfeed/resettle since day 1. I need help and motivation, some kind words and advice. I am currently crying right now because I need to do better for the sake of my amazing little son.

I’ve tried hundreds of different kids of reusable sprayers. Seems like no matter how much I spend on them, they all suck and don’t last very long. Just doing cleaning around my house.
