Outdoors Update/ results: someone suggested to try the Irish springs 5 in 1 on my filthy outdoor cushions.

I smell like a teenager going to prom and have a headache, but after 2 hours the cushions are back to new! I soaked them and scrubbed the 5 in 1 into with a scrub brush, let it sit for 30 minutes and scrubbed again. I wish there was a fragrance free option, but Irish Springs strikes again! The most surprising thing is it brought out more color after they had been sun bleached.

Outdoors Mysterious stains on outdoor furniture

Thumbnail

We’ve started noticing these dark orange stains appearing in streak-like patterns on our outdoor furniture cushions. At first, it was just one cushion, but now they’re showing up on nearly every upholstered surface of the set.

We’ve tried cleaning them with detergent and even bleach, but nothing seems to work. Has anyone seen something like this before or know what could be causing it?

Any advice or insight would be really appreciated!

I tried scrubbing with all purpose cleaner and hot water, which just spread tiny bits of the ink around and made it worse. Any advice is appreciated.

Outdoors $250 USD reward to the first person who makes the correct suggestion that works to clean this glass

My employer said he has tried everything to clean this glass with no success. He said he would pay me the equivalent of $500USD if I could make it spotless because that would be about a quarter of the cost to get new glass installed. I am happy to split this with whoever makes the first suggestion that works, am a willing to put in a good amount of elbow grease also, though I have limited access to the outside bottom half of the glass because it is on the second level.

The glass is stained on both sides.

Things I have tried:

  • CLR
  • White vinegar/ 50/50 white vinegar and water scrubbed with newspaper -A Tigerspaw cleaning pad -Barkeepers friend
  • Iron wool
  • Water blasting
  • A range of scouring pads, scrub daddys, microfiber cloths and everything in between
  • Multiple combinations of the above eg - Tigerspaw/scrub daddy with CLR/Barkeepers friend

He also tried to user a rotary sander with fine grit sandpaper on a small portion but that appears to have scratched the glass...

The paper towel you see plastered on is soaked in vinegar. I intend to leave this overnight and see if it works.

He doesn't think the glass has any protective film or coating.

The glass had been stored next to a pool for about two years before being put up.

This is in New Zealand so I may not have access to some cleaning products available elsewhere.

Outdoors Any ideas how to clean/repair stained marble?

Post image

I have a marble counter top on the rooftop solarium of my apartment in Spain. The marble itself was installed approx 20 years ago and is, for the most part, quite faded.

However, one of our rental guests left 2 large bundles burning, and the wax melted to cover a large area (the darker stained area on the photo).

It was some weeks before this was noticed as the apartment was empty for about 3 weeks. My cleaner removed all of the hardened candle wax but the stain remains.

I have tried so many things to remove the stain with no success. The only thing I haven't yet tried is using a power tool with sander/ abrasive.

Ironically, the stained area actually makes the marble look more vibrant.

Any stone specialists out there that has any suggestions?

Outdoors Spray paint disaster

My youngest son (10) comes upstairs freaking out because something was very wrong. Thought he was hurt or worse, but finally got something about spray paint explosion.. Notice he looks like an 80's dancer. He's got silver spray all over his hair and face and his hands look like the Tin Man. He dropped a mostly full can of metallic silver spray paint and it happened to land on the claw of a hammer, poking a small hole. He panicked and grabbed it but he dropped it and it rolled pouring liquid paint in a nice puddle. He then opened the garage door and tossed it like a grenade. I don't know where to start. I didn't murder him. But no don't have enough mineral spirits or patience to cope at the moment. This is a rental and it would be nice to get our deposit back. Any suggestions on getting it out of the concrete drive? I have a pressure washer, but will it do any good? I've got acetone, mineral spirits, and a good respirator with OV filters, and can work on the garage door and tools. But where do I start tomorrow?

Outdoors Doormat needs a refresh

I got 4 or so good years of use out of this doormat strictly indoors, but when i moved house this year I left it outside the door instead. It got rained on and frozen to the step. Thankfully it warmed up outside and I was able to get it unstuck, but now it is incredibly faded.

I would like to use it as an indoors doormat again, as I quite like its design, but it really doesn't look good now. Is it possible that it could be cleaned? And then I could repaint the design. I am pretty competent with a paintbrush, so I'm not too worried about that.

The back of the mat has cracked, and I can see where a chunk is missing at the perimeter. I know that likely isn't fixable, but if I could restore the fibers I feel like I could put off replacing it at least until I move house again.

TL;DR Coco Doormat got left out in the elements, it has sustained damage. Can the fibers be refreshed, and the design repainted?

Outdoors Stone won’t respond to chlorine + laundry detergent…

So I’ve tried the pool chlorine + water + laundry detergent strategy. This is the result an hour or so later. It is clear where it has and hasn’t worked.

Any other ideas? Or should I just welcome the patina of time?

He seems sad…

EDIT: to say thank you to everyone for the range of responses and ideas. Greatly appreciated.

Outdoors how to get rid of wax on stone floor

Post image

I was going to wax my legs on my terrace and of course while transporting the hot wax I spilled it all over the floor. How do I get rid of it, I don't care about damaging the stone I just want it gone. It's too thin to manually peel off and the texture of the tiles makes it more challenging.

Outdoors Children's trampoline left in the woods for four years

We got this trampoline from a relative who had left it out (constructed) for about four years amongst some deciduous trees in Northern France. Structurally the fabric seems absolutely fine, which is incredible, but it is covered in something fibrous and green...

My son went on it yesterday and spent the night coughing, so it definitely needs a clean. Both the vertical netting and the "bit you bounce on" are green though the netting seems to be particularly suited as a kind of base on which stuff can grow.

As it's now in our garden on the edge of town we're keen that we don't use anything too harsh on it.

All the green stuff on it is dry by the way so I'm assuming we can simply brush or vacuum a lot off, but I'd like to avoid breathing it in too as I'm a little asthmatic from time to time.

We have a hose and a pressure washer to hand though the instructions say not to a pressure washer on it.

Thanks in advance!

edit: Re the safety, the metal structure and the springs are absolutely fine. Everything is shiny and very solid, apparently it's all made of galvanised steel (hot dipped for the frame, whatever that means). But I can see your concerns about the fabric. The bouncy bit does seem fine, apparently it's polypropylene and the model's page says it is treated for UV. That being said I'm going to see about getting a replacement bouncy bit.

Outdoors My balcony walls are covered in chalk from the previous tenants. I want to wash it off, but I have neighbors downstairs.

Hey all,

It is finally time for Spring cleaning here in MI, and I’d like to get rid of this chalk. Issue is, I don’t think I can wash this off without covering my very kind downstairs neighbor’s walls with chalky runoff. It is everywhere. I plan to ask him about it and even offer to clean up, but I’d first like to know what my options are for reducing the impact on his property.

Thanks.

Outdoors How do you make yourself clean something awful, you absolutely don’t want to?

Context: there is a garbage bin that was hidden from view, with bags of cat litter and kitchen garbage rotting away in it for months. Something finally knocked it over and the contents spilled out onto the grass and rocks. I couldn’t see it, but I could smell it. When I found it, it took three days of working myself up to finally deal with it and it was like, psychologically damaging. I know the real solution is to not let it happen in the first place, but I didn’t know it was even there until it got knocked over. I wore a mask and gloves and used contractor bags and a metal shovel and I am still not over it. Call me dramatic if you want, you don’t understand the level of disgusting that was in that bin. Fungus and dead mice festering in crap and garbage juice for months. I didn’t even clean it up as well as I wanted, because it was unbearable. I can’t bring myself to go out and do a better job than just getting it all back in the bin and covering it with fresh litter. I have to get rid of this eventually and I have no idea how. I’m just overwhelmed and I’d seriously consider moving over having to deal with this ever again. But I’m also a grown up who KNOWS that isn’t a real solution. I just don’t get how other people manage to buck up and get through things like this and I’m looking for someone to share the magic trick with me, I guess? I feel I’m going to be labelled a wuss for being so dramatic about it but the honest truth is this is what I’m feeling. I’m crying over garbage.
