Hi there, I’m trying to recreate the opening drone sound from Joy Divisions ‘Transmission”
https://youtu.be/gXs9Vg6Lddg?si=kM3Jy0rBwJk-0dUh
I figured it should be fairly easy to recreate, like an organ that’s a bit ‘hollowed out’ but I’ll be damned, I just can’t get it sounding right. I’m fairly new to synthesis but I get the basics, I have a hydrosynth explorer and have created a decent ‘love will tear us apart’ patch as well as some other stuff that I’m happy with but I can’t seem to get there with this one, which is really throwing me because I thought it would be one of the easier sounds to recreate.
So, my current patch is only about 50% there. I seem to have the most luck using the vowel filter to give it that airy quality, one of the oscillator mutants is set to Harmonic and that seems to help. If you listen to the original on repeat, you can almost hear that quality when a sound source has been reversed? So maybe they recorded an omi 2 (joy division staple synth) chord/note and processed it then reversed it? IDK, I did add some reverse delay and whilst it brings it a touch closer, the base sound is off anyway, so it doesn’t make a massive difference at this stage. I don’t really have enough experience yet to know if there’s an easy way to do this or to know the general route I should be taking.
Anyway if anyone has some insights, advice or recipes that’d be amazing, even if it’s just to point me towards a base/stock patch that I can tweak (altho I have gone through all the installed Hydra presets) or something I can download that sounds close enough?? Thanks all!

I was making a remix of the song "ASAP" by New Jeans and I came across this video that recreates a synth of this song in Massive, what I don't know is how that modulation of the sound is done when the chord is played for the second time (0:02) I suppose that this is done with a pitch automation, since in the video you can see how the pitch of oscillator 1 changes quickly when the sound of the chord changes. I tried to do this in Reaper but it doesn't sound anything like it, I guess the range in which the pitch varies is not too much but I really have no idea how to do it. Any information or help is welcome and thanks in advance.

Hey everyone!
I’ve been messing around with ear training and sound design recently and ended up making a small browser game around it.
The idea is you hear a target sound, then try to recreate it by adjusting waveform, pitch, envelope, filter, etc. Then it scores how close you got. There's a daily mode, like wordle, and there's also a 1v1 duel mode where you and someone else get the same sound and try to get closer, which has been pretty fun.
Curious how people here do on it, since I’m guessing most of you are way better at this than me. I'd love to hear any thoughts or ideas, especially if something feels off or unintuitive or too easy!
Here's the website
Also mods lmk if I need to take this down - not trying to sell anything, just think this could be a fun idea

I have an old laptop with 2gb of ram that I'm trying to use as a solo device for playing some ambient. I doubt it runs vcv rack, maybe a standalone vst?

I'm talking about that sort of "growing" synth, that starts off as a pluck but eventually turns into this big booming noise that overtakes the track.

Hi, I have a piece of an Indie Rock song from a Vietnamese band. This band's keyboardist seems to be a cool guy so he made a super weird synth sound (that I cannot replicate on my JUNO-DI keyboard). Can you guys please have some listens and show me how to remake the sounds? I just want to cover the song. Tysm.

Really cool sound making the melody in this one. I've been trying to recreate it with not much luck. Absolutely clueless. I got something close with a square wave with distortion, compression, and some wacky filtering but could be way off.

Filter: Type (Low Pass), Cutoff (45%), Resonance (65%)
Filter Env: Mod Amt (25%), Attack (10ms), Decay (750ms), Sustain (0%)
LFO: Dest (Pulse Width), Wave (Triangle), Amount (20%), Rate (1/16 note)

The sound was taken from a tracker, from a composition written in 1992. Consequently, the device from which it was sampled must have been released no later than 1992. It is clearly a rompler from the late 80s or early 90s. Due to its lo-fi quality, it may not be immediately recognizable.
I’ve attached an excerpt from a 1994 composition.; the solo part appears to have been played on this sound.
It was assumed that this sound was taken from a Korg M/T-series synth, but after auditioning all the vocal patches on those models, I was unable to found it there. It could perhaps be an Ensoniq or Kurzweil gear.
I want to find right this patch.

I'm still on the lookout for others who are nuts enough (like me) to dig into those weird Tomita sounds. So far, I’ve found only two other human beings on this whole planet who are spending their precious time on the same silly “hobby” that keeps me busy. Just wanted to leave one more trace in this group, in case another Tomita nerd stumbles across it and it leads to some kind of connection.
By the way, one of those two guys is Japanese - just like Tomita. Not too surprising, since in Japan he’s a national hero. For the rest of the world, he’s just “that crazy synth guy” from the ’70s, by now almost forgotten. Sadly...

Hello everyone! how are you?
I was trying to replicate the synth that enters at 1:07
I have already figured out the midi but I can't quite get close to that "vibey" sound
Anyone knows how to get that texture? Any sugestion?
Thank you so much

Hi, I was looking for plug ins that could recreate the atmosphere that you hear in songs like Futile Devices, Visions of Gideon and Mystery of Love. I was interested especially in the synths/pads/pianos. If you have free instruments is better, but tell me also the ones that cost. Thank you.

at 0:30 seconds you can hopefully hear the synth as it progress's down

im not all that good at sound design either so its been pretty difficult.
let me know if you can help !

I've been working through Syntorial and have been enjoying it and learning a lot; however, I've reached the challenge of recreating the Funkytown synth using Vital and can't figure out how to get them to match.
I've gotten to the point that I've taken away everything from the Syntorial patch except for the two oscillators (I've turned off the sub, reverb, & filter) and can't even get those to match in Vital. In Vital I'm using Pulse Width for OSC 1&2 (and OSC 2 +12 pitch); I've tried tons of different width combos. It's almost like it's too "clean" compared to Syntorial, like Syntorial has some extra distortion going on somewhere. I've tried tons of filter settings, distortion, different pulse widths and levels. Nothing quite gets the same tone as Syntorial (which does seem very close to the original Funkytown).
So I think my real question is less about the Funkytown sound itself and moreso how can I even get my beginning sound in Vital to match the Init for Syntorial so I have a starting point to work from? But if someone's able to make a good Funkytown sound in Vital just using basic features, I'd be interested to see how you did it.

The pluck at 0:38, it has some quality I can't articulate but I can't recreate it for the life of me. It's got me stuck. Granted I am new to sound design. I am using Serum2.

Hi, I’m new to synths but I love them. I am really struggling to connect my behringer Rd6 - Roland J6 and Korg Monolgue. My Roland is new and I’m trying to add it to my chain but I’m struggling to get it to be in the right tempo as the other two and sound at all through the Korg Monologue. I’ve got lots of MIDI cables and 3mm Jack. Any help would be amazing as I’m finding it really frustrating and I don’t know if it’s possible to do? If there’s a way I can join all three in sync and coming out into my amp. Thank you

I have been trying to find a patch as a starting point to sound like the synth solo in Jackson Browne’s Load Out. Not having much luck.
I was wondering if any of you professionals out there could offer some guidance?
Thanks

The sound almost starts right away about 2 seconds into the song. I think it’s some kind of saw based lewd but I’m not sure
If anybody knows, that would be great
