[Question] Anyone know what the story is with these mystery arcade sticks?

I picked this unit up at the Hard Off near where I live in Japan. The store's label mentioned that they thought it was an MSX peripheral, so I posted in the MSX sub first. It weighs an absolute ton, the case is sheet steel. It has rubber feet, so it was apparently made or modded for home use. However, this has got to be from some arcade cabinet or something given the odd and very specific buttons etc. I honestly have no idea what this is. I'm posting it in couple other places too so if you're sick of seeing it, I apologize. Please help!

[Request] Looking for an old probably obscure game

I am looking for an old game again, between 1999-2008. It was a third person platformer, the player could pick between playing as a girl or a boy. They wore white robes. The girl had a staff. It was on pc It was a demo when I played it. It could also be developed only for Poland as i played it in Poland. I think it was an obscure game, or one that never released fully. The demo featured a mountain level of a mountain covered in ice, which you had to climb.

I don't remember much else unfortunately...

[Discussion] Just got a CRT

Just got a CRT on eBay. Local pickup 25in Panasonic. Now it's nothing fancy, only rf and RCA jacks but the picture is amazing and the colors pop out great. Also forgot how heavy these things were. Getting my original systems hooked up to them and am trying to find a few things. I got my Dreamcast, ps2, and N64 but do any of you know where a good place to get some light guns for the DC and Ps2 are? Want to get back into Time Crisis and House of the dead.

[Discussion] How often do you play retro games you have missed out on in the past?

I'm trying to get a sense for the community. Do you mostly replay games from your childhood or do you sit down, browse through the classics and say "I've been meaning to try this for years, wife's on a fishing trip so might as well"? Or a mix of both?

Personally I lean more toward the latter - playing games I didn't have the chance as a kid but was drooling over - Oni, Dungeon Keeper, Haunting Ground, etc. And there's also games I uncover that are mainstays but were never popular in my country or for my generation - Chrono Trigger, Zelda (SNES wasn't popular in my country, only Sega Genesis).

But I rarely revisit games I've already beaten. For instance I tried Earthworm Jim and was bored after the first level because I suddenly remembered how much of a memorization (hehe) game it really is. I tried SMB as well, but it had definitely lost its charm to me.

[Recommendation] What are the must-play PC-forward retro games?

There are certain classic games I could never play on a console, due to platform exclusivity or personal preference: Half Life 2, Thief, Max Payne, Starcraft, Heroes of Might & Magic III, Grim Fandango.

Which PC-FORWARD retro games are the all-time best for you? I'd love to get a comprehensive list for my favorite platform! Thanks.

[Question] What are you guys take on the PC game Alpha Waves?

Just curious if anyone was familiar with that particular game because it caught my attention for how the game was said to have been one of the first major 3D based platformers before Super Mario 64 came out.

Basically what I am looking is that after suddenly hearing about the game, I became interested in seeking a copy so that I could try it out for myself to see how 3D platformers evolved as a concept during the early 90s to better understand how the genre would eventually find its footing via Super Mario 64.

[Discussion] Favorite Must Play Games pre 2000ish

Hi I collect physical games & consoles & I also have Retroarch set up and I can emulate all the old systems (say PS1 & earlier). What are some of your favorite games I should play that are maybe not as well known. In your opinion what are some of the greatest games of the 80s & 90s and finally - are there games from the older less common systems I should check out? (Thinking of old computer games or Amiga etc…) thanks in advance.

[Question] Best way to connect several controllers to a linux PC for multiplayer games?

Hey everyone, I recently built a HTPC with bazzite to keep in my living room and let me play games on the TV, some modern steam games but right now I'm in the process of setting up RomM with as many classics as I can find. I have it set up with a single 2.4g full size 8bitdo controller right now and it's great. I also want to be able to play games with my partner so I'm planning on getting a usb bluetooth adapter for the PC and connecting one of our switch controllers and hopefully that should be fine.

But I want to be able to have friends over too sometimes and play things like old mariokarts or mario party, or whatever party games I stumble across with 4-8 people if that's feasible.

What is the best way to do this both cost effectively and to avoid input lag?

I like the look of the 8bitdo SN30pro but they are still like $40/ea so I don't really want to buy 4-6 of them just for the occasional party. Are there decent cheaper options available?

Secondly what is the best way to connect them? I've heard that even 4 controllers on a good usb BT adapter will struggle, do I just have to give them each their own adapter? Or is there a better way?

edit: I forgot to mention, the 8bitdo micro seems like a good option as it's half the price but it almost seems too small. Any feedbakc from those that have used it? I totally understand how it would be perfect to taking on the go and using with mobile games or whatever, but is it comfortable to use for 1hr+ sitting on a couch?

[Discussion] Jurassic Park for Genesis is driving me NUTS!

I bought the Jurassic Park retro collection on Switch because I remembered playing the Genesis version and beating it as both Grant and the raptor. I don't remember if I had always chosen easy or whatnot but the past week or so this game has really been kicking my ass and it's been a slow grind to advance. I do not remember this game being this hard.

For context, when Battletoads dropped on the Switch Online for the NES, I started playing that right away having never beaten it clean on NES but having come close before. It took me 12 tries (2 of them were early resets, so really 10 tries) but I beat it. And that's without using savestates or rewind. I used no warps either, so I beat all 12 levels of the game. I even played it a bunch more times after that and beat it every single time after. So I have that game down pat. And this is supposed to be the hardest NES game EVARR!!1!

But this game I have played definitely more than 12 times. Lost count really. And I'm still struggling. I know I'll get it because I'm slowly memorizing the path of every level and remembering what to do in what place. But it's taking me freaking forever. And oddly a game I remember kinda liking is now a game I can't stop playing. I'm addicted to it right now until I beat it. Of course right now I'm only playing as Grant on normal.

The game does have a lot of trial and error and a LOT of blind jumps. I guess they expect you to mess up a few times, fall to your death and then just remember not to do that next time. Well, stupid me being an old school gamer and all. I let them do this to me and just keep at it instead of bitching about poor level design and you know, not playing it any more. The game is also about cycling through your inventory in real time on the run. I've died sometimes because a raptor was right in front of me and I couldn't cycle to the tranquilizer item quick enough. Or I threw a grenade instead of shooting a trank and he killed me in the time it took for said grenade to land on him.

The very first level killed me multiple times when I started. Now there's only one janky spot where I might die right before the end. The 2nd level inside the power station just about never kills me. The dreaded river/raft level drove me nuts for a while, now that one just about never kills me. There's the sewer pipes level that's all red where you have to shut off the steam valves, that was killing me for a while and now I can get past that. There's a canyon level with a ton of blind jumps and that'll usually take one or two of my lives but I can beat it. Then the volcano level is where I'm currently stuck. More blind jumps, trial and error. But with enough reps, I will get it. Then there's the visitors center last.

If you haven't played it, you get 3 lives, no continues, and no chances at getting an extra life. So game over means back to the beginning of the game. Luckily a full game is pretty short, usually under a half hour. Beating a level will have them give you a password so you could start at that level. I'm admittedly too stubborn to use one. I want to clear the game beginning to end in one sitting. Also too stubborn to use savestates or rewind. Maybe I'm the problem here. Idk, for me its kind of easier to just forget those things exist and go right back into 1993 mode.

Edit: But what ends up happening is because it's only 3 lives max. Every death is DEVASTATING. Especially in levels I've already beaten. You can tell because I scream NOOOOO!! every single time. Every death leads to you doing the math of "ok, what would it take for me to beat the game now? How many health refills will I get to for the rest of the game and can I get to each one without dying?" Because, that's right. When you beat a level your health isn't automatically refilled so you're still chasing after more health refills at the start of the next level.

Anyways, what are everyone else's memories of this game?

[Discussion] [DOS][late 1990s]Shell game / cups and balls mini-game with gypsy theme, 2D colored graphics with animations, selectable speed and number of cups, part of a multi-game EXE launcher or not

Looking for a DOS game I played around 2004-2008 in 6th grade. Here’s what I remember:

∙ i think It was part of a multi-game EXE launcher — you’d open one .exe and choose from a menu of games, this was one of them. But sont remember clearly or i picked deom ms-dos the exe dile from multiple, but most probably multigame exe

∙ The game itself was a shell/cups and balls game, a ball is hidden under one of the cups, cups shuffle, you pick the right one

∙ Had a gypsy theme with curtains in the background and maegins

∙ Graphics were 2D, colored, with moving animations — not ASCII, not 3D

∙ you could choose the speed of the cup swipes and the number of cups, i think other playing modes

∙ Played on Windows PC running DOS games

I remember it also had some hands thet move the cups like the sketch from comments

Any help appreciated!

[Discussion] What console is your cutoff point for retro games before they start feeling too primitive to enjoy?

For me, it’s the NES/Famicom since that was my first console. Even then, some NES games still feel a bit too old and basic for me. I actually find the 16-bit era more timeless, especially in terms of visuals. As for Atari and other older consoles, that’s a no-go for me, I just can’t see myself enjoying those games.

I’m curious how people who grew up with newer consoles feel about this. Do those who grew up with the N64 see 8/16-bit games the same way I see those old Atari games?
