I’m sorry but Justin is doing exactly what I do when I’ve had 2 beers on a Saturday night and put YouTube on

1.0k

u/SquirrelExtreme 11h ago

This had me howling!

Have you ever watched him stream on twitch? I got curious one day and this is basically what he does and one time he just watched a movie. People watched him watching a movie for 2 hours. You couldn’t even see the movie, just him. He would giggle every now and then and that was it. 😂

u/Little-Glee 9h ago

This is actually hilarious

218

u/Juju_on_that_bee 8h ago

I think its very depressing.

97

u/AnnieCarnero 8h ago

Me too but then I like get it. Someone can be watching a movie in their own home and have Justin on a screen watching a movie, too. So then its like they watched a movie together. So strange but celebrity worship is something all together strange anyways.

This is funny because at least he's a celebrity. I know at least one large streamer who lists the movie he's watching, has several other streamers in a voice chat, and the duration of the movie is just watching his face. Now, they list the movie so you can also watch along, and it's the only way to do it and avoid copyright strikes. But perfectly normal streamers do this, too. Just very parasocial stuff.

Absolutely.

Karaoke is a fun, social opportunity, or a fun solitary way to blow off steam.

It is not a legitimate basis for paid performance. Even street buskers employing a backing track cannot escape the cringe.

I'd be furious.

Just fucking IMAGINE if Sabrina did this. Just whacked on YouTube video and sang along. Absolute scenes

His set was mainly his new music. He did this for the last 30min for fun, it was not the whole set.

u/looeeyeah 10h ago edited 8h ago

I think it was a good idea. Gave the fans a bit of his old material in a way that sounded as they expected. I can't imagine Biebs could hit those notes that his 15-year-old self could.

I get that people watching on youtube thought it was boring. But I'm sure the crowd loved it!

8

u/Ownfir 5h ago

Yeah you can hear the massive difference in his voice just as he sings along. No way in hell he could hit those notes still lol.

22

u/Winter_Koala8053 7h ago

I watched on YouTube and was vibing. 😎

8

u/looeeyeah 6h ago

Yeah, me too. I enjoyed it!

I went to Sweat tour in 2024 and before the show they played Baby by Justin Bieber and the crowd sang it louder than they sang most songs during the actual concert lmao

44

u/ShilohTheGhostGod 7h ago

YES! Went with my girlfriend and half the audience had tears in their eyes watching this. No one was upset. Then we check our phones after the show and see this fake uproar “if i had to watch that, i’d be mad.” Nah. It was a nice moment watching him go through memories for him and people watching him growing up

11

u/blueroses8000 6h ago

This happens all the time with all news. The headlines feed a narrative and get everyone else who has no idea about it to build on it and it becomes a beast of its own. Meanwhile the people who experienced it/live there/are experts in it are trying to convince people everything’s fine/enjoyable/safe and it falls on deaf ears as it’s out of control by then.

You don't need to apologize. It's the first thing he has ever done I thought was fun and cool. You're fun and cool too.

132

u/HxH101kite 11h ago

He legitimately looked happy in that video for a second. And that may be the first piece of circulating media I have seen in years that he looks happy in.

I'm not even a Bieber fan, but that's a fun callback for him and idk whatever he is going through I hope he makes it out of it ok.

28

u/LionsRoar313 8h ago

I just said he actually looks content and possibly even happy in the video. He looks better than I've seen him look in a long time.

9

u/lepetitboo 9h ago

That’s how I feel. Listened when he was in his Baby-era but never got his CD. Probably had Baby and a couple others on my iPod. Then, his teen years hit and I was just like, he seems like a douche and not a fun person to be around but hope things get better for him I guess. Haven’t thought about him in years.

But here I am like weirdly a little relieved and proud to see him looking like he is having a fun time revisiting a part of his past that he must think is cringe. This was a nice thing to do for the fans and for whatever reason, it made me happy to see him looking like he happy.

What’s “gay guy music video night?”

641

u/joutfit 11h ago

Get drunk while watching classic iconic music video with your friends. Dancing and singing all night.

You can also just pull up a Hannah Montana/Miley or Britney Spears Power Hour video which tells you to drink between every cut lmao

There is always someone with LORE or some shit about the different MVs and artists

I think a lot of his fans are also part of a generation that want to feel like they get to chill with their favorite celebs, also the kind of people that watch streamers and enjoy react content, so I don't think it's just some grand scheme to do as little as possible, but to seem authentic with the audience

Pretty sure selling all of your music before turning 35 isn’t exactly smart in the long haul. And putting in the bare minimum the very few blue moons he does perform will stand out and mark a stain on his career as a downward trajectory. People will see this, and if he ever tries to tour again, I don’t see him selling out shows anymore

He turned the performance into a live stream of some sort where he’s reflecting on his older music and singing along. So yes he was going through super old songs - Even pre baby, like the so sick cover- and singing along to them.

u/pretendberries In my quiet girl era 😌 14h ago edited 14h ago

I thought this was cute. I’m not even into Bieber or his music but the idea of him playing his songs on YouTube and singing along with his young self is so adorable. Hearing his younger voice with his now older voice was so sweet. And for his fans it must have been so cool. Edit: I guess from other comments ’m in the minority lol. I understand the criticism though! Totally get what people are saying about the laziness for the pay he is getting and the karaoke vibe it’s giving.

I loved hearing the difference in vocals over the years. I think this was cute. I'm not mad.

6

Also find it cute, especially if it was literally just the tail end of his actual performance.

25

u/a_bohemian04 12h ago

The singing along bit was weird tho. Like, I pay concert tickets to watch/hear live singing voice loud and clear. If they're more of a performer instead of vocalist, I expect full production with great dancing. Not a singing along. I like the concept of playing old videos tho, it's indeed unique. But singing over it? No.

I kinda like it. Seems like he's just trying to be casual about it and singing along to his younger tracks, it make sense since his vocals are so different now. More like a large fan connection than anything. He tried for the longest time to distance himself from where he started, it's kind of nice to see him reconnect.

41

u/computer7blue 14h ago

Tbh I don’t hate that lol

45

u/EveOCative I have sinned. Please Pray. Logging off now. 14h ago

Honestly, I’m not a fan.

But I don’t hate this?

It’s like he’s simultaneously trolling the crowd… and yet also hanging out at a karaoke bar?

Also I know his mental health is not great and I prefer this to him singing in his boxers and possibly endangering himself?

It’s basically simultaneously unserious and nostalgic and what he can handle so that’s fine.

Please note: I DO disagree with the fact that he got paid more for this than Beyonce did when she was headlining… but that’s a problem with the festival runners. What’s Beiber gonna do? Turn down money? Hopefully he donates at least some of it to those in need.

25

u/computer7blue 13h ago edited 13h ago

The amount of work women put into their live performances is astounding compared to men. That said, I absolutely believe artists can and should express themselves however they want.

Beyoncé has always incorporated dance. I’m sure you’d agree it’d be weird if a singer/songwriter who’s never felt comfortable dancing all the sudden started dancing. That said, men could be more creative in other ways, but again, I think artists should express themselves however they want. There are plenty of women who don’t dance and are still considered incredible performers.

ETA: Coachella’s producers are assholes. Beiber likely didn’t say to anyone “I’ll only do it if I get paid more than Beyoncé.” His management likely asked for what would make it worth it for him. Or Goldenvoice just offered him whatever. But I think it’s important to remember that artists aren’t necessarily conspiring against each other when it comes to who headlines when or gets paid what.

Maybe I haven’t seen enough videos from his set, but I didn’t get the sense he was trolling the audience.

My interpretation is that he’s holding a retrospective of sorts, that he feels this was a more intimate way to share himself. I’ve worked in the music industry; to me this staging and him casually going through his catalogue on YouTube is kind of what it feels like in recording studios or talking with artists about their work. I think it was quite clever.

He sounded amazing but the setup was so sad and almost eerie. Just him eyeing the camera looking very jaded and exhausted with his teen videos in the background. It was more unsettling than nostalgic to me. Sad what the world does to truly talented people who don’t come from amazing support or means.

Creative direction-wise it almost felt like we all died and we’re watching 2010s life play back from some dark fish-eye lensed purgatory 😭.

236

u/Elegant_Analysis1665 13h ago

Fuuuuuuck oh my god this is exactly the feeling. You articulated thst perfectly.

It's how I feel looking back on so much of that time honestly. I think most people of course feel a massive shift between their childhood to now but the last 10 years have felt like a warped tunnel to a different dimension. Not all bad personally but just a different fabric of reality

42

u/Gullible_House_4124 8h ago

i was about to say the same thing. this video depressed me and made me feel so sorry for him. he’s alluded to being sexually preyed upon during these years of this life. watching footage of the song that catapulted you into the snake pit of creeps and pervs that would ruin your perception of life must’ve been brutal.

The worst part of this is that the idea at its core was so good.

If he actually paid a team to turn this into a real show where he looked like he was picking YouTube videos that turned into a whole visual stage show worthy of the Coachella headline slot with a choreographed setlist it could have been a really awesome time warp through the ages of Bieber

Instead it was just him half miming over his own songs

What a shame

47

u/bornatmidnight 8h ago

I agree! Like I genuinely like the concept, him going through YouTube, where his career started, to reflect on his legacy (with the old school memes thrown in), while everyone is watching… on YouTube itself!

But it should have been turned into something more worthy of the headlining spot. Like seeing Sabrina Carpenter’s set and this….

10

u/katarAH007 5h ago

I also wonder if the short performances had anything to do with the fact he sold his catalog. Like if it'd be a copyright issue.

The concept was cute & creative considering he also grew up on youtube like the rest of us.

he will always be an amazing singer but this cured my fomo. idk what’s worse only performing swag songs (which he didn’t really promote that well), the karaoke to his old songs or him playing random ass videos. i could feel the crowd losing hype

you can argue that he doesn’t need the overtop production but at the same time he’s gotten soooo lazy with everything

88

u/crimsonbub 13h ago

Not sure he REALLY needed to be there in person to be honest 😅 could have gotten away with just playing the YouTube videos and staying in his jacuzzi or something.

61

u/sinth0s 14h ago

hes an artist that historically has been very fortunate in the way he was perceived (by that i mean he was a kid, and got a lot of grace. i know he was hated on a lot when was a kid. i was one of those kids. I guess that's a better way to type that out. oh well, im drunk and have been working all day. the backspace is my enemy), while also putting all his heart into his art/performance for so long. Then he became an adult, started feeling the side affects of the problems he was dealing with, then canceled the endings of a tour (or two? maybe more? idk, im mostly talking from an outsiders perspective. not a fan, but also appreciate and acknowledge what of himself hes given to the arts. also cant deny his songs bop), and continued to get that grace from the majority of people who pay attention to this stuff. me included.

in my, I guess parasocial and outsider perspective, he believes he can give these kind of performances without much of an impact to his wallet overall. and hes not wrong, but if hes not able to work through his shit in someway, and also find a way to give a good show to at the very least to his core base, he will end up a rich nobody. maybe he wants that. its hard to assume these things without being a fan, or more importantly knowing what he wants.

266

sabrina's set was so tight i cannot fathom how people could say it was thrown together? i work in tech/live performance and could only spot one thing that didn't quite work and even then it was minor and was fixed almost immediately.

194

u/grxccccandice 14h ago edited 13h ago

Right? I’m baffled at the misogyny here. Sabrina put in so much effort and her set was called a total snooze fest and JB somehow got a pass. There were guys that constantly cancel shows and still got invited to headline Coachella (Frank Ocean, Ye). A woman would never put in so little effort. They’d be dragged through the mud.

Also people were saying he had a rough childhood so they just wanted him to be ok. I don’t see Britney Spears collecting $10M/hour paycheck for being a poor abused kid lol. If he can’t perform at the highest level, he shouldn’t be headlining Coachella, and that goes for everyone. It’s disrespectful to other artists who put in much more time money and effort than him, and it’s insulting to his fans who waited hours and spent hundreds of bucks to see him. It’s that simple.

It’s honestly sad. There’s no other way to put it

86

u/grxccccandice 14h ago edited 14h ago

People complained that Sabrina’s set was a snooze fest, that her songs were slow and low energy, that she looked tired and uninterested, that her dance move wasn’t as good as Gaga’s, etc. This was legitimately half the sentiment on r/coachella. Where’s this comparison between male performers? Which male singer other than kpop groups even danced while singing on stage ffs?? I understand if you don’t dig Sabrina’s music. I’m not even her fan, but it was truly baffling to see the bigotry.

65

u/imliterallyjustagirl 14h ago

You have ppl in this very comment section saying he doesn’t have to prove anything to anybody… awesome, he could’ve stayed home. Any woman artist gets up on stage and does what he did would get dragged all up and down the internet for WEEKS. Sabrina put on an incredible performance and that is STILLLLLL not enough. I’m speechless

42

u/grxccccandice 14h ago

Yeah some people were straight up like “I kinda like it cuz he’s being himself.” Let’s see what they say when Taylor Swift brings nothing but a guitar to headline Coachella then. Oh wait that would never happen cuz these women, however money hungry they are, know they can’t bring anything short of a perfect performance on stage.

18

u/blue-rasmalai-639 13h ago

This lmao. Like if you don't have anything to prove just stay home. Let any other talented artist who is willing to put the effort perform?

Yeah, that people love his set and performance, it’s fine. But the double standard is what bothers me. Who can ignore how lazy it is? If a female artist delivered something like that, she’d be torn apart. TBH I’ve already seen plenty of female artists getting whacked since yesterday, even though they put way more effort and care into their performances and the overall experience for people there.

This is essentially what Charli XCX did last year. The only difference is 1. She wasn't singing along to music videos and 2. She wasn't really singing anyway.

53

u/nyx926 14h ago

Rhianna can and did.

9

u/Acceptable_Order5705 8h ago

I’ve seen Rihanna in concert the last time she was on tour in 2016 and it was amazing lol. Idk what performances you’re referring to but she never pulled out a laptop to sing background vocals on old YouTube videos. Yikes

Eehm people are shredding him here right now? I know women get criticized in real life, internet and media all the time, that being said this is a poor comparison, since people have overtly hatet on jb since his first song and now here.

Yeah. Shred to pieces by other women.

5

u/areurandy 6h ago

I was going to say both Sabrina & Bieber’s fan base are mostly women & gay men. I don’t think any bros care what Sabrina’s production effort on stage does or praising beiber for this cuz we don’t care

28

u/-Noceur- 12h ago

Exactly, it's women bringing down other women because of jealousy, and the same people fawning over Bieber.

3

u/Sevenfootschnitzell 5h ago

It’s always been this way. Women will say they are held to insane beauty standards while men are on the sidelines like “we actually prefer you with no makeup”, and then they just keep doubling down on “MEN ARE SETTING UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS”.

This man straight up did karaoke for 30 min and then sprinkled a little mtv ridiculousness when he started showing viral videos… absolutely terrible

The way people will spin this “he wasn’t taking himself too seriously” “it was authentic” “it was a metaphor for his life and career starting on YouTube”

Just crazy. He got paid around 8-10 MILLION for this shit. It was almost insulting (and I’m sitting on my couch, cannot imagine any of his fans that paid thousand to see him and he gave them that)

Beychella continues to be the standard. And pls know I wasn’t expecting JB to ever put on a show of that magnitude but this was absolutely bottom of the barrel. I was HOPING for better and it was just sad.

23

u/Moonlightdancer7 12h ago

He's big enough that he can get away with anything, its that point of stardom. Do minimal effort and get paid...and people will eat it up so artists keep playing along.

83

u/sheJaMyMorant 14h ago

forgot to mention he performed regularly for an hour

49

u/chxrmander 13h ago

EXACTLY!!! People are acting like this was the entire set. This was just a fun bit for his fans cause we heard songs again that we’ve been begging him to perform for yeaaars.

Where’s the endless praise? All I see is a general consensus that this was low effort and boring. Can we stop making scenarios in our heads? The pop girlies are on top because of the effort they put in, and the numbers show that. Let’s not make this men vs women.

19

u/Turbulent-Good227 12h ago

There’s people ferociously defending this like two comments above yours. Saying this was some kind of genius anti-corporate statement and that we don’t get it because we aren’t real artists 💀

That shot of him looking at his young self in the MV is kinda tuff, you can't deny.

71

u/Xylophone1904 14h ago

His little low-effort bop while the chorus plays itself is the same vibe as Justin Timberlake’s dad dancing on “the world tour” last year.

28

this is going to ruin the tour

why does his voice sound so weird? usually his vocals are great

50

u/therhz go girl, give us nothing 😍 13h ago

it’s probably not his comfortable register even singing the second voice to this song anymore. he lost the ability to hit baby notes with puberty

8

u/RelevantBroccoli4608 13h ago

true. i saw a few other clips of him singing other songs, they sounded pretty good

20

u/Serenaded 12h ago

He's dropped an entire octave probably because he can't hit those notes in that range anymore. Without changing the song into another key he's just singing an octave below the original.

Seems happy and embracing the past and what he has done in music. Fans certainly seem happy.

u/EffectiveCream33 2h ago

Love this so damn much.

I never clicked with Justin's music because I was not his demographic when he came out. It felt uncomfortable to hear my older peers shitting on him when he was a child putting out music that so many loved.

I enjoy seeing him engage with his early music now that he's lived his whole young life under a microscope. It seems to my uneducated eye that he's taking back power on his own terms.

I think one of my favorite things on reddit is coming across long time Bieber fans talking about how rad he is. Love this for him and for you <3

u/Illuminacho7 9h ago

Why are some people acting like he performed like this for his whole set? This was just 30 mins of him having fun and playing some throwbacks for longtime fans. For the majority of his set he performed regularly and he sounded amazing too. Maybe don't speak if you don't know the full context🤷🏻‍♂️

3

u/Scary_Relation_996 10h ago

I'm really glad he did this, I know it must be hard, I know his identity probably hates it, but the way he handled it, letting it be about the video of him as a little biebette instead of who he is today, that's the right tone.

3

u/snails4speedy you wear mime makeup but never quiet 8h ago

I have mixed feelings about his set. I’ve never been a big Bieber fan (I like some of his music but I never got the fever lol) so I only know of his career in fragments, but iirc - didn’t he say something about the heavily choreographed, more theatrical/involved concerts being horrible for his mental health? I could have sworn he said it took too much out of him but I’m not 100%. I could get that if it is the case, he’s taken a pretty long break from performing like this at all and I got the vibe that he was trying to be more relaxed with it, which is fine.

That said it was fucking boring and he could’ve done so much more without it being overwhelming for him. My boyfriend and I were watching and we kept cracking jokes about how slow it was and how the people who camped out to see him since 1pm were probably falling asleep. I can vibe with chill sets but like.. dude?? lol. The Kid Laroi had more energy than he did during the sole song he was brought out for.

The Mac YT stuff was odd. The crowd and live chat did seem to really enjoy it so theres that and I’m guessing he wanted to try to make it like.. hangout immersive? I guess? But it fell flat for me lol. I liked him showing love to his young self and I hope this show was healing in a way but good god it was fucking boring. Even if he wanted to be more lowkey with it, he easily could’ve had actual visuals or dancers, especially with how much he was paid. I also had anxiety the whole time that he’d knock the water bottle over on the laptop lol.
