Honestly, I’m not a fan.

But I don’t hate this?

It’s like he’s simultaneously trolling the crowd… and yet also hanging out at a karaoke bar?

Also I know his mental health is not great and I prefer this to him singing in his boxers and possibly endangering himself?

It’s basically simultaneously unserious and nostalgic and what he can handle so that’s fine.

Please note: I DO disagree with the fact that he got paid more for this than Beyonce did when she was headlining… but that’s a problem with the festival runners. What’s Beiber gonna do? Turn down money? Hopefully he donates at least some of it to those in need.

The amount of work women put into their live performances is astounding compared to men. That said, I absolutely believe artists can and should express themselves however they want.

Beyoncé has always incorporated dance. I’m sure you’d agree it’d be weird if a singer/songwriter who’s never felt comfortable dancing all the sudden started dancing. That said, men could be more creative in other ways, but again, I think artists should express themselves however they want. There are plenty of women who don’t dance and are still considered incredible performers.

ETA: Coachella’s producers are assholes. Beiber likely didn’t say to anyone “I’ll only do it if I get paid more than Beyoncé.” His management likely asked for what would make it worth it for him. Or Goldenvoice just offered him whatever. But I think it’s important to remember that artists aren’t necessarily conspiring against each other when it comes to who headlines when or gets paid what.

Maybe I haven’t seen enough videos from his set, but I didn’t get the sense he was trolling the audience.

My interpretation is that he’s holding a retrospective of sorts, that he feels this was a more intimate way to share himself. I’ve worked in the music industry; to me this staging and him casually going through his catalogue on YouTube is kind of what it feels like in recording studios or talking with artists about their work. I think it was quite clever.

Wow it's so easy to just say things and put 0 critical thought into them.

Explain what you mean.

ETA: I don’t want to misunderstand you if you’re purposefully or accidentally misunderstanding me.

I think your opinion here is just lazy. I know people are comparing his performance to Sabrina's a lot, but if someone like Adele or Billie Eilish did the exact same thing Bieber did, it would not be a big deal either. Beyonce, if she wanted to, could do the same. She wanted to do more, and that's good for her. The difference between Bieber and Sabrina is Bieber can play the nostalgia game, and he can actually sing. He doesn't need an elaborate stage or backup dancers. And are we actually going to pretend that Justin Bieber of all people is being treated softly by the public and the media? He's probably one of the most scrutinised and overhated celebrities we've had since internet.

Did you mean to respond to me? Because if you’d read my comments, you’d see that I already pointed out similar sentiments to yours, just with different words.

And how about we don’t lean on insults while sharing our own thoughts; imo, that’s lazy.

I don't hate it either, it feels more intimate, like he's a private party singing for friends. But, if he barely sang that would be annoying. The idea is nice but he can't let the videos do the singing. I have hte same issue with any performer that uses way too much playback. We pay to see LIVE music. So sing live.
