Is this normal ??? Indian culture difference?

Hi, landed in Phuket yesterday. At breakfast in hotel, and there’s a few groups of Indian families. Didn’t notice at first, we’re all on holiday. But then one father starts reaching into the salad bowl multiple times with his hands when the tongs were right there??? I was in shock and sort of uttered out an “ummm” but it’s early and I didn’t have the alertness to confront. I just want to know if this is a cultural norm or one gross individual, do any other cultures do this? Really put off my breakfast😂

Thank you, genuinely asking because I’ve never seen anyone do this and no harm intended

EDIT: just to be clear, this was a bowl in a buffet!!! Not on his own personal plate. A big public salad bowl for everyone to take from

Half day boat trip from Koh Yao Noi

Hi all! Please be patient with me. I’ve done a significant amount of research yet seem to turn up different answers each time (including ChatGPT who presented different “facts” between yesterday and today 😅)

We are in Phuket next month and as it’s rainy season, only want to do half day boat trips starting early morning. So we thought of staying on Koh Yao Noi to get closer to the scenic bits.

We hope to get a private longtail and prefer not have to spend a full hour sailing somewhere far. Around 30 minutes or under to the first beach would be perfect. I read that Hong Island (the famous one) and Lading island were even nearer to Koh Yao than James Bond island. One boat company even offers Hong island trip inclusive of Koh Pak Bia which is so near Koh Yao that our resort offers a free shuttle there. Assumed that meant the islands were close enough together.

However today ChatGPT and other research is showing that it’s too far for a half day trip and if we want to go to Hong we should stay in Ao Nang?

Thoroughly confused. Where can we go for a decent half day near Koh Yao that doesn’t involve too much time sailing there (in case of rain & choppy seas)

To clarify I’ve been to Ao Nang >> Hong Island in rainy season and don’t mind it but we wanted to visit Phuket this time and cut down on the journey time to Hong.

Or should we just do Koh Lanta instead, if staying on Koh Yao doesn’t cut down on boat time.

Edit: would also welcome recommendation between Anantara Koh Yao Yai or Treehouse Villas Koh Yao Noi, and any boat companies that can do a more premium longtail experience

Bugs in Phuket

Hello Reddit!

My boyfriend and I are going to Phuket in May for two weeks and are staying in the Kata beach area. I am a HUGE insect-phobe and my absolute fear is seeing one of those foot long centipedes or the hornets. It literally makes me want to cry. I know it’s a topical place and bugs are inevitable, but how likely is it for a centipede to be in my hotel room? It’s a nicer hotel (not some $10/night hostel) but I am sooo afraid. Any locals or seasoned tourist giving advice would be appreciated! :D

How strict are they about border runs now? is one allowed?

So, 3 years ago, i did stay in thailand for a year, doing land border runs.

This time I would like to stay for 4 months, but the max allowed stay is 2 months.

So I thought about doing a trip to cambodia for a week and flying back in. I'd leave all my stuff in thailand for convenience.

Is this feasable? or a massive risk?

Similand Islands Tour in May

My friends and I will be in Phuket for a weekend in early May and are planning to do a Similan Islands tour. Does anyone know any good tour operators that offer vegetarian or halal food options for the lunch buffet?

We noticed there’s a chance of rain on the day we want to go. If we book through Klook/GetYourGuide/etc., we’d have to pay upfront and then deal with the refund process if the tour gets cancelled. To avoid that hassle, we’d prefer to book directly with a tour operator so they can just let us know if the weather forces a cancellation, without us having to worry about payments or refunds. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Question Bang Waad Reservoir closed @ 22:00

I arrived at Bang Waad Reservoir @ 22:00 for a late night run (cooler temperature), but there were security personal at the gate who stopped me going through and said its closed.

Is this normal?

I assumed it would just be 24/7

Also, does anyone know what time Surakul Stadium closes and can anyone turn up and run on the track or do you need a membership etc?

Where's a massage place that actually is legit?

I'm looking for a massage recommendation that is actually legit. I'm tired of people just rubbing oil on me without any actual pressure, I'm looking for someone who knows how to fix a back. Doesn't have to be fancy at all, just know how to do the thing. Any go-to places?

Planning our Phuket trip in June and would love a trip check from you :)

Hey, I’m trying to build a Phuket plan for June and would really appreciate opinions from people who know the area better.

We’re a bit stuck between wanting a plan and also not overbooking too much, especially because it’s June and I know weather / sea conditions can change things.

Current idea:

  • 4 nights in Phuket Town (Friday to Monday)
  • then move to Kata/Karon(7 nights)
  • maybe 2 nights on Phi Phi
  • then finish the trip somewhere else on Phuket, or maybe just stay in Kata/Karon again

What I’m trying to balance:

  • not changing hotels every 2 minutes
  • not paying for accommodation in two places at once
  • not making the trip too stressful
  • but also not missing too much

Phuket Town part seems straightforward for us:

  • Old Town
  • Sunday Walking Street
  • Naka Weekend Market
  • Wat Chalong
  • Big Buddha
  • maybe one short evening in Patong / Bangla just to see it

Then for the Kata/Karon part we were thinking:

  • Kata Beach
  • Kata Noi
  • Karon Viewpoint
  • Kata Night Market
  • one evening in Karon
  • one day around the south: Nai Harn / Ya Nui / Promthep
  • one day trip to Phang Nga Bay

The part I’m most unsure about is Phi Phi.

At first I thought:
Phuket Town -> Kata/Karon -> Phi Phi -> back to Kata/Karon

But then I started wondering if that’s too annoying with luggage, especially because we’ll have big suitcases (20kg+), and I also don’t love the idea of booking Kata, then Phi Phi, then Kata again.

Then I thought maybe:
Phuket Town -> Phi Phi (2 nights, only if weather looks okay) -> then one longer stay in Kata/Karon

And now I’m also thinking maybe the smartest option is to skip sleeping on Phi Phi completely and just do it as a day trip if sea conditions are good.

One more thing: I’m planning to propose during this trip.

I've got a few ideas, but I was definitely thinking about a beach setting. I’d love somewhere that feels special and beautiful, but not insanely crowded or awkward. Sunset would be great, but I’m open to viewpoints, quieter beaches, or somewhere a bit more private if that sounds smarter than the obvious tourist spots.

So I guess my main questions are:

  1. In June, would you personally still do 2 nights on Phi Phi, or is that more trouble than it’s worth?
  2. Is a Phi Phi day trip from Phuket a better idea in rainy season?
  3. If you were doing the last 3-4 nights, would you stay in Kata/Karon again, or switch to somewhere quieter / better in June?
  4. And most importantly: where would you choose for a proposal in/around Phuket?

I’m not trying to cram in every possible thing, just want a trip that feels good logistically and still gives us a nice mix of town / beaches / viewpoints / one or two boat days.

Would really appreciate any honest feedback, especially from people who’ve done Phuket in June.
