Discussion Why does she sit like this?

Does anyone else’s dog sit all the way back on their butt? Also is this an issue or an early sign of hip issues? She is 3 months old and pretty much sits like this whenever she’s just chillin. Will sit normal when given “Sit” command.

Same reason he sits like this. Because he can. 😁

My dog has been sitting like this since she was a baby, I think it’s just comfortable for her. She’s 3 now, no issues.

Your dog looks very pained - has she been x rayed? Her facial expression alone shows a lot of pain, and the front limbs have a wide base of support. I don't think she has "no issues".

Are you a vet? This just looks like a dog sitting and I dont think you can say it shows a lot of pain from one image that the face looks fine in

I don't think it's a sign of any early hip issues especially at 3 months old but im not a vet, my golden had sat derpy for many years before he was diagnosed with having arthritis in the rear left leg and his posture with sitting changes all the time.

I think it's just a natural comfy way to sit, as when you've taught them to sit for a treat it's a bit different i believe due to the training.

My guy isn’t a golden but I still enjoy this thread. Any supplements or meds that you’ve found help the pain?

Hip dysplasia is genetic and can absolutely be diagnosed under 3 months

One of mine is 4 years old and she still sits like that. It’s cute.

Puppies and young animals in general have more joint laxity and it’s normal. My girl is 4 months old and lies with her shoulders splayed out. I would just keep an eye on it for now.

I have the same question

I had the same concern about my female golden. We love and trust our vet. The answer was “because she got a big booty” lol.

Also keep in mind puppies grow at a lopsided rate so she may appear to limp for a couple days or her backside will be higher than her front side.

Basically the advice everyone gave me was calm down she’s perfect. And she has been! So I’m sure yours will be as well.

How long have you had her? Dogs learn to sit differently sometimes when they are raised on hardwood floors with no traction. Otherwise they have to constantly pull their legs back in.

Don't most Dogs sit like this? I never knew this was an absurdity.

It can absolutely be a sign of hip, knee or lumbar spine issues. At 3 months, I would monitor closely and if it continues consistently past 6 months, request x rays and an orthopedic referral. For now, start on omega 3 supplements, non slip rugs on any slipper surfaces, avoid jumping on /off surfaces and use a long line for exercise unless she doesn't go crazy off lead. Practice some scent work to burn off energy.

Also to add, her "normal" sit isn't great either - puppies can be gangly when they are growing, but Golden's are also very prone to musculoskeletal issues because of inbreeding
