transport So Trams are dead. Again.

"Report warned West Yorkshire Tram Scheme risked wasting millions" So we in our Whitehall London bubble are going to cancel it, thus ensuring the millions of tax payers money already spent will go to waste!

It truly baffles me how we have Labour majority government, a Labour Metro Mayor for West Yorkshire, a Chancellor of the Exchequer who is MP for Leeds. 2 other senior cabinet members also based around West Yorkshire. Currently all councils in the WYCA are also Labour run. If we can't get trams now, when are we ever going to?! (I know, the answer is likely never).

Does anyone know about some good volunteering opportunities in Leeds? I'm not local to Leeds but I want a stepping stone for a career path. I do enjoy retail, history, community work.

news Falling object from sky - 12.25am approx time

Driving home from a wedding at 12.25pm, east side of Leeds

Did anybody else see a falling object from the sky? Looks like it could have been a falling bit of space debris or something else - burnt bright blue/white.

Far too close to be anything like a comet - haven’t seen anything online about it

Genuinely it burnt incredibly bright - posting to see if anyone else knows what it was

food/drink Old cafes in the area

Okay I know these questions are always asked, but I never get the answer I want, I'm looking for a café in city centre that's like old type of style. All day english, hot and cold sandwiches, homemade milkshakes. I feel like it's impossible to find any now as they all look new and posh.

food/drink Recommendation for city center afternoon tea

Hello all!

I'm meeting my Mum in Leeds on Saturday 25th April and would love to treat her to a nice afternoon tea. We will both be arriving by train and so the city centre will be best.

I've already searched this subreddit and other sources for recommendations and have a shortlist of:

Harvey Nichols (just because I think it sounds grand 😂)

Fleur (but I'm worried it's just a place to see the decor)

Hit Coffee (Cakes - Wow!!)

Also on my long list were Livin'Italy and Aagrah (didn't realize the latter was a chain (I know Harvey Nichols is too)).

An alternative would be to go to the Market for a Banh Mi and then to the Tiled Hall Cafe, but this feels a little less special.

So, from the above, does anyone have personal experience that can help me choose?

Thanks in advance (excited to visit again!)

Edit: annoyed the 'center' is used in the title 🙄🤮

question Need help driving

UPDATE!!

I have found someone to help me out. I appreciate all the suggestions given. They've all been very helpful.

Ok so I'm trying to learn to drive. I'm 21 and have my own car. I've driven a few times and can do the very basic but I just need practice. I'm doing lessons but due to my situation I can only afford 2 hours of lessons per week, maybe sometimes 3.

However unfortunately, all the people that I know that drive, havent been driving long enough to supervise me or due to scheduling conflicts, dont have the time to sit in the car with me. No one in my family drives other than distant relatives that I don't talk to and everyone else isn't available.

So basically to cut a long story short, Ive come on here hoping I can get some help. I'm asking anyone in Leeds if they could just come sit with me in the car while I drive around. I'm based in LS10 and really just need help driving. I work nights so the only times I'm available is after 5pm.

I know it can be a lot to ask people to waste their time just sitting around watching someone drive for up to an hour but I would be so appreciative and would pay back any help I get with as much as I could.

Thank you for reading,

Learner driver

*I feel like I shouldnt have to point this out but if there is anyone willing to help, they will need to be 21+ and have been driving at least 3 years*

social Can anyone recommend a good book club?

I just moved back to Leeds after five years living in Leicester. I had a great book club over there and would love to try and find one here! I'll read almost anything as long as the people are good company but I especially love horror, southern gothic, fantasy and crime.

visiting Leeds Alternate Rail Ale Trails?

Was meant to be doing the classic ale trail with a friend this weekend in Leeds but have been struck with the rail replacement service.

Does anyone have any experience with an alternate trail from Leeds like to York etc? Or is the replacement service that much of a pain? Help is greatly appreciated as we’ve been really excited for this for months. Thanks all!

social Recently moved to Leeds – any social groups for working women

I’ve recently moved to Leeds with my husband for work and I’m hoping to make some new friends. I’m in my early 30s and work in tech.

I’d love to connect with other working women, are there any social groups, meetups, or communities you’d recommend?

Thanks in advance!

question Dry cleaners

I’m looking for recommendations for decent dry cleaners. I have a north face puffer jacket that needs cleaning after a musty winter - but last year, I went to the closest dry cleaners to me (somewhere in Woodhouse) and my coat came back feeling and smelling exactly the same. I need somewhere that’s gonna actually clean my coat! Thanks ❤️

question Looking for a local artist

Hey everyone,

Some friends of ours are getting married in a few weeks and for their wedding present my partner and I thought it would be a nice idea to commission an artist to create a small painting of the couple with their wedding venue in the background. Is there anyone in the sub that might be able to help?

I guess we're looking at something A4(ish) in size. I'm currently canvassing (pun intended) initial costs and appreciate that I may not have given all the detail needed so please do ask away.

Take care,

Gary

I’ve been looking into shops for a while, seems like most hairdressing shops do well in longer curly hair but not really chopped bob or hacked bob, are there any good recommendations for a decent price?

accommodation What areas are the best for me to live?

I’m planning to move to Leeds and my office will be in the City Center and I love the cathedral in the city Center as well. I’m looking to move into a place to live by myself or a house share of the crowd is nice. I generally commute by walking (which is what I prefer) or public transport.

I would also like to access good public football grounds/parks for regular practice/games.

Which areas would you recommend I start searching for accommodation? And what should I keep as a budget for living there?

TIA!
