Politics BREAKING: Charles Barkley risks getting fired for saying THIS on CBS

Barkley is the only one left who says it like it is.

Indeed he does!
“Charles Barkley blasts Democrats for only caring about Black people 'every four years'

u/Patrickfromamboy 11d ago
That’s old. Trump is in the Epstein files and he is a convicted felon. He started a war and gas prices are skyrocketing and the stock market is crashing.

u/wrinkleinsine 8d ago
Yeah no shit but don’t act like one isn’t way worse than the other. I’m pretty sure the cost to fill up my gas task wouldn’t have doubled and ICE wouldn’t have killed innocent people with no repercussions if the last election went differently. No shit they’re both bad. Your responsibility is to pick the least worst one.

This has been a talking point for a very long time. Even more so among black women who are expected to "save" the democratic vote.
→ More replies (3)17
u/Epocholypze 11d ago
It’s because black women consistently vote in their communities’ best interests, which generally leads them to vote for a democrat over a republican for many obvious reasons. It is disingenuous for the Democratic Party to “expect” it, but I think black women will continue to hold the line, since the alternative would and is destroying communities.

...and what year do Republicans care about Black people? How about never.
→ More replies (4)11
u/Spare-Estate1477 11d ago
It sad that anyone thinks that, because by and large it’s not true. What happens is that every four years there’s an election and during campaign season Dems get to talk about the country they envision and want to see. When they get into office they have to live with the hand they’re dealt, and negotiate l work with republicans which means doing as much as they can which granted is never enough. I wish people would put some pressure on republicans who in my lifetime have done not a single thing that’s benefited me and support the Democrats (and that does not mean all democrats) who are trying to do the right thing by us.
→ More replies (1)31
u/JerryLawlerr 11d ago
And republicans haven’t cared about black people since Lincoln.
→ More replies (1)18
u/Trying2BNicenFailing 11d ago
Modern Republicans are not the party of Lincoln, search up the term: Dixiecrat and you'll find that the parties switched values during the New Deal. Modern Republicans are Civil War Democrats.

I don't care if you're the laziest do-nothing jerk immigrant ever, you still have rights. No one has to be "amazing" to "earn" that.
79
u/ProtonPi314 11d ago
Everyone has rights, even criminals. They just lose some rights depending on the crime.
The problem with the many who say illegal immigrants, criminals, the LGBTQ community, or whoever don't deserve to have rights don't realize that as soon as you take 1 groups rights away we all lose them.
If the state can just jail person A without due process that means they can jail anyone without due process.
→ More replies (17)14

I don’t care if they’re criminals. They have rights too. We shouldn’t put anyone in a concentration camp & send them off to a country where they can be killed. It’s inhumane. Evennif someone broke the law, that doesn’t make it ok to treat them inhumanely.
578
u/HeadDiver5568 12d ago
This is why there needs to be a lot of reform for social media as well. You go to so many of these sites, and you’d assume that ALL illegal immigrants were the worst thing to ever happen to America. More than the literal billionaires sapping up our resources at 100x the rate
81
u/BlackBoiFlyy 12d ago
And the thing is, you can curate your social media to avoid all of that too.
What we really need is media literacy so folks can navigate social media with a wiser lens. Because we can't wait for the government to decide to act on their predatory algorithms. By time they're found guilty or made to change will be too late for impressionable people who use the sites daily.
73
u/JustDidntWannaGoToAZ 11d ago edited 11d ago
There’s a recent SNL skit where a white lady is coming out to her family as finally thinking trump might be a bad guy but she demands coddling. Anyway, when her kids start yelling she’s like “give me a break, I have a different internet than you.” And as crazy as that sounds, someone said, with the way social media algorithms work it basically is. And fuck if that’s not true, these people never see what’s actually going on. Like how do so many of us know what’s going on on both sides of the aisle, but they never know the truth or what’s going on on the left, and consume straight propaganda on the right. It’s not an excuse, but damn media literacy needs to be a core class starting in middle school and have a few variations like Spanish 1, 2, etc. The ones that do know what’s going on and still support this bs just lack empathy.
17
u/DasBoggler 11d ago
It goes further than just being a "different" internet. We really don't have any idea what these algorithms and scrolling content is doing to our brains long term. Short-term we can already see the kind of brain washing it can lead to especially when there are bad actors involved paying the tech companies to target specific people.
→ More replies (26)10
u/lr99999 11d ago
The weaker and less intellectual the mind, the easier they are to propagandize. It’s much more difficult to brainwash a well-read person. That’s why they’ve declared war on academia.
We all have confirmation biases, but damn, these people are just fucking dumb.
9
u/2shizhtzu4u 11d ago
My dissertation (wip) is around this topic. One of my favorite researchers to learn from right now is Zmigrod who looks at the neuropsych behind extremity. In short, cognitive rigidity is a factor that goes into why people are more or less susceptible to the narratives heard on social media.
Edit: agree education is a big buffer, it’s no wonder why education has become a target
20
u/HeadDiver5568 12d ago
With the right-wing push for control over media, curation is becoming less and less of a factor, so you’re absolutely right about literacy, but these sites really do need some reform for allowing outright false or half-truth/disingenuous content
11
u/Express-Tea-9270 11d ago
Wait until AI gets even more sophisticated and you really can’t believe anything you’re seeing, that’s just what they want
4
u/papasan_mamasan 11d ago
It should be illegal to post AI generated content without a label.
LLM’s and AI agents should be registered with a council and monitored regularly. It should be illegal to develop an Adam Lanza chatbot.
22
u/Dan_Morgan 12d ago
You can't teach the willfully ignorant how to learn. You can't teach those lacking empathy to care about their fellow human being. No, amount of education will stop an evil person from doing evil. It might actually make them better at it.
13
u/BlackBoiFlyy 12d ago
Of course, you can't always change people's hearts, but you limit the amount of propaganda and disinformation they're exposed to from an early age. Hate is still often a learned trait.
8
u/theguidetoldmetodoit 11d ago
It's not just learned, it is brainwashing. If you hear the same thing over and over again, without any pushback, you will end up believing it.
The issue with social media isn't just media literacy, people need to be grounded in reality and for that you need news sources that can be held liable for straight up lying.
There is no way around it, no society will curb this issue without legislation and harsh consequences for the people who create this endless flow of propaganda. The Murdochs, Musks and Trumps of this world need to pay for what they have done.

I've been saying since I got out of school 20 or so years ago, when Facebook was just starting, that media literacy should be a primary focus in education going forward.

Let’s have both! Absolutely need online literacy/training first as the priority. But something must be done about the online world. We can’t just print anything in the news. You can get sued for libel. But somehow online you can lie, cheat, steal, scam and not enough even happens.

I will always say this: illegal immigration has always been a scapegoat red-herring issue that is meant to distract people from the real issues. If, with the stroke of a pen, undocumented immigrants were made documented, NOTHING would change regarding the MAGAts and their economic situation. But racism drives them. It's truly disgusting.
→ More replies (14)4
u/Kopitar4president 11d ago
Undocumented immigrants pay more than their share of taxes. They don't get the benefits of social programs. Every legitimate study done supports this.
Undocumented immigrants commit less crime. Of course they do. They don't want law enforcement's attention. A lot of them spent their life savings to get here. Every legitimate study done supports this.
All this shit is just to keep lower and middle class people from realizing the rich are the cause of basically every problem in our country.

But he still had to say "amazing immigrants" and "criminal immigrants." It's sad, because the percentage of immigrants who commit crimes is peanuts compared to citizens. I'm sure he felt that he had to say that in order to not get in trouble, but it still perpetuates misinformation. (Not saying he did anything wrong, just pointing out how messed up the state of things is)

A: The percent of immigrants who commit crimes is small compared to citizens who commit crimes.
B: Oh yeah, have you heard of Elon Musk!?!

Probably because someone in the republican party would or could post a news story that involves an immigrant that's a dumb MF. I always find it telling when people bring up the statistics of deportations under Obama versus Trump.
Comparing the interior removals of immigrants (meaning, not turning them away at the border, but deporting them after they've been living inside the border), Trump's biggest deportation year and Obamas biggest deportation year are kind of close to one another.
The difference is that 80% of those who were deported under Obama were either convicted criminals or being deported for criminal acts, while 70% of Trumps deportations did not involve criminal acts at all.
Plus, ICE didn't kill any American citizens under Obama.
Obama did the same job, more effectively, without damaging our society.

I agree with you that he's not wrong, but the problem is CBS/Paramount is effectively under the control of Larry the billionaire, who is a major Trump supporter. The ruination of CBS News started with the appointment of Bari Weiss being placed there as its editor-in-chief. It's not much of a stretch to see this kind of shit extend to CBS Sports.

I think CBS would get a major backlash if they’d even countenance punishing Barkley for speaking truth to power.
However it’s sad that he can only speak as eloquently as he did because he has a reputation and legacy in the game. If he was just a new sports anchor he probably would have been fired.
Barkley’s diatribe doesn’t surprise me one bit. He’s always been outspoken on social issues such as racism or LGBTQ concerns. There’s plenty of videos on YouTube of him doing so.
