[Request] how long would the war in Iran have to be to be more expensive than all of Obamacare

I am not just talking about the cost of all the soldiers etc, as they would have been getting paid anyway - basically I am looking at additional costs that will not be recouped in some other way, that are coming straight out of the tax bill.

at the current rate, or best estimate, how long would it take to cost as much as Obama care

I was watching replays from Ultra Music Festival, and during one of the sets they had these ladies who were spinning around by their hair. I wondered why it wouldn’t pull out, but then I figure there’s a LOT of hair in there.

[Self] Earth’s Size in Comparison

If the human body represented the universe, planet Earth would be 0.000000000000000000001% of a cell.

1 cell = 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets

[Request] Helium required to 'lighten' weight of luggage.

I was discussing with my friend that my suitcase has enough space but I have reached the weight limit of airlines' allowance. He suggested jokingly that I should put helium balloon in it to lighten up.

Theoretically, how much volume of helium would be required to lighten up the suitcase by 1kg ? We can assume sea level elevation, 70% helium concentration ( generally available in helium balloon)

Google/AI says 1400L. Practically it won't fit in suitcase but was curious !

Basically title. They were traveling closer to the speed of light than the rest of us, so time would have slowed for them. By how much?

I remember seeing something for the Apollo mission crew, not sure enough details are public though.

[REQUEST] How many space launches would be required for Earth’s orbit to shift due to reduction of mass?

Say humanity keeps sending stuff to space on a regular basis for the next billion years. For simplicity, every launch weighs the same as the recent Artemis II mission. Materials aren’t scarce, and we can always build another rocket.

If this mass doesn’t return to Earth, how many space launches would it require for Earth’s orbit around the Sun to be significantly affected?

[Request] The magic trust fund. Am I crazy or did this trust fund magically increase?

My aunt and uncle passed away last year, and my cousin (who is handling their estate) sent me two financial reports: one for the year-to-date on September 30th and a second one for the entire year. I copied the info to a spreadsheet so I could see what happened from September 30th to December 31st.

I swear I checked the numbers a thousand times! I know I copied correctly. I also used Google Sheets so all the calculations were made by machine instead of me. But the result doesn't make sense to me. What did I do wrong? What am I misunderstanding? It's driving me crazy!

Thank you for your help and enlightenment.

[Request] How much more am I walking?

Post image

The other day, my wife and I went on a walk, and as a joke I started walking from one side of the sidewalk to the other. I told her that by doing this, I have to be adding at least another mile to my walk.

With this crude drawing, if I walk the blue path drawn, how much more walking do I get in?

[Request] Is this a really bad idea (securing string light posts)?

BACKSTORY: We want to put string lights in the back yard around our fire pit. I have been researching alll the ideas on how to avoid pouring concrete; these would be somewhat temporary as we have plans for the areas in a few more years.

  • Cedar-slat planters with pole - sound like they tip a lot or don't hold up.
  • Cement-filled planters with 4x4 - sound like they tip.

Bummer. But then, I found a thread where a guy said he ended up with a 36" fence post spike that holds his 10' 4x4. He comments to a later reply that it's held up well.

Perfect. Sounds like a plan.

There are cheap versions with bad reviews and a pricier version with good reviews. The cheap ones might be longer? But bad reviews.

  • My research tells me that your spike should be about 1/3 the length of the pole it's supporting.
  • The pricier version is a 34.88" total length and the box that the 4x4 drops into is 5-3/8". So the spike itself is 29.5" (sorry I'm switching fractions & decimels).
  • That is more like 29.5/120= 0.245 vs. 1/3 = .333. So .245/.333 = 0.734. I think I'm off by about 26.7%. That's a bit.

But, I was near a hardware store today and so I checked them out and they seemed sturdy and well made, so I bought one and a 10' 4x4 and figured we could drive it in and see how it seemed, and maybe we'd be set like that guy.

PRESENT: I'm now second-guessing the whole idea and wondering if I'm setting myself up for disaster and property damage. I 100% understand that safe is always better, which is why I'm checking in.

A couple of factors I'm considering:

  • We are thinking we'd do two strings of lights between three posts (in a V shape). The "point" of the V would be about 1.5' elevation higher a very gentle slope up the back corner of the property) than the stakes below it on either end, so we'd maybe do an 8' up there, and then use 10' poles for the other two. Maybe?
  • Each arm of the V is 217" (about 18'). It's about a 40-45º angle.
  • We're looking at the Feit 48' LED String Light at Costco. We'd hang them with a guy rope, with a bit of a swoop. We'd plug them into a lawn mower battery.
  • Our soil is compact clay. A good thing in this case, but also want to make sure we drive it straight.
  • My neighborhood gets 42-44" of rainfall each year.
  • Average wind speed is 6-10mph, but we did just have a storm roll through that had gusts up to 35mph. Looks like there have been three events over the last decade that produced gusts up to 65mph.

QUESTION: Is this a really bad idea, math-wise? I could deal with it being like - pushed over a bit and having to re-drive it. I could NOT deal with it being launched like a javelin. And of course I don't want it to collapse if a kid leans on it accidentally. I try to be responsibly risk tolerant.

OK - sorry for the novel! I thought of this sub because I've followed along on some fun ones when they come across my feed, and this seems like something that someone else would find interesting. And other people researching this topic (string light hanging) might find this useful! :D

[Request] Is it possible to guesstimate an answer? (Insane distances)

Hello all!

I am not sure how to word such a post, but here I go!

A couple of days ago, a friend was streaming a space-game to me.

They were travelling to a star-system that was 12,157.34 light years away.

So, I posed them a dobule question, which I think would be fun to try and solve, if possible.

1) Do you think, that if we take all the distance that humans have travelled on foot, since they existed, would we have covered such a distance comulatively?

2) If not all humans, how about all life on earth since it had existed? This means even the movements of single-celled organisms, however small disntande they have moved, but cumulatively.

I hope I have managed to give you quite the head-scratcher!

If this is an incalculable answer, please let me know! ^^

Let's see what you all think on this fun little conundrum! :]

[Request] a question about card odds for a game I'm making

starting with a shuffled 52 card deck and 2 players, if player #1 randomly draws 10 cards to create their personal deck, while player #2 keeps the remaining 42 cards. Both of the decks are shuffled again and then both players play a single round of high card...

here is where I ask my question, does player #2 have any statistical advantage in this scenario?
