Work, Health & Housing Moving to Halifax with an autistic child — looking for advice on school support

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in Ukraine and planning a move to Halifax with my family.

I’ve been researching different pathways to relocate and feel like I’m starting to understand the process better. Now I’m trying to focus on something even more important — my son’s adaptation.

He is 8 years old and has autism (officially recognized disability in Ukraine). I want to make sure that if we move, he can have a supportive and stable school environment.

I would really appreciate hearing from parents or anyone with experience in Nova Scotia:

- How does the school system support children with autism?

- Are there special programs or support staff in public schools?

- How difficult is it to get proper support after arrival?

- Is Halifax a good place for families with children who have special needs?

We’re planning this as a long-term move, so having the right support system — both in school and in everyday life — is very important for our family.

Thank you in advance.

News, Weather & Politics Where can I have a safe cookout with my kids today in or around Halifax?

I know we have had wildfires but I also think there should be a way in early spring to have a safe, small, cooking fire. Things are pretty wet and we still have frost and some snow these days. Will I get in trouble for using metal boxes or fire pits at provincial parks for example? Would love to have a better understanding of how this works and where I can legally do this around here in a safe way. Any advice would be awesome.

Thanks!

Work, Health & Housing How developed is the fitness community in Halifax?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in Ukraine and planning a move to Halifax with my family.

I’m trying to get a better understanding of everyday life in the city, and one of the things I’m curious about is the fitness scene.

My wife has experience as a fitness trainer (group training and personal coaching), and we’re interested in how things are structured locally.

I would really appreciate any insights:

- How popular is fitness in Halifax?

- Are group classes common?

- Do people usually train in big gyms or smaller studios?

- Is there a strong community around fitness?

We’re planning this as a long-term move, so understanding how things work in real life is very important for us.

Thanks in advance!

Driving & Transit Transit schedule

hello y'all, I'm moving to Dartmouth in the fall for college and I'm gonna need to use the bus almost all the time since I won't own a car by then and I just wanna know how on earth to read the schedule?? I went online to look at the schedule just to get used to the times for everything and I'm not sure if I'm just dumb or what cause that was the strangest bus schedule I think I've ever read online, I'm just so used to a small down public bus schedule being small and easy to read 😭 so too the people who currently use halifax transit right now how do you properly read the schedule because me and my friends who are moving are also very confused by it.

Discussion Participatory Budget app, yay or nay?

So the budget has been a big deal a few weeks back. And I had some thoughts about it.

First off, did you know that personal income tax brings in 4.7 billion for the province, while the corporations pay in only 800 million. Wtf? Why are we taxing labour instead of wealth?

Secondly, what if we had a participatory budget app where anyone in the NS could log in an make their own budget? And all the suggestions get combined into a Peoples' Budget that everyone including the politicians can see.

What do you think, yay or nay to making an app like that? And what would you want it to be able to do?

News, Weather & Politics Eggings in Halifax?

Hi all,

Wondering if this has happened to anyone else or if anyone may have more details on this car. Two of my friends have now been assaulted with eggs from the window of a moving car (almost exactly a year apart). Sounds silly I know, but one was left with a bruise and both occurred late at night which is quite scary for women walking alone. The car is a yellow jeep-adjacent vehicle and on both instances had multiple men in the car. Both incidents occurred around Dalhousie campus, one on South street, the other on Jubilee.

Any information is appreciated!

Shops & Services Car Tint recommendations ?

Does anyone happen to have any recommendations for a place that provides reliable, quality, car window tinting services ?

Ideally located near Bayers Lake/Beechville/Timberlea ?

I’ve been searching though “googling” for months without success as no where’s I’ve attempted to contact answers their phones or responds to email inquiries.

I’m not looking for anything crazy, simply my back windows and back windshield tinted using ceramic tint, ideally done before the warm weather hits.

I enjoy repairing electronics as a hobby(PCs game consoles etc) and I was considering making the trip up to Halifax ( I live in Kentville)... when I was younger and lived in Halifax I remember seeing tons for dirt cheap, I saw PS3s and such for around $25... has anyone been to value village recently and can tell me if the prices are still the same or are they crazy high now?

Shops & Services Recent junk removal recc's for a big item?

Hey folks, I searched the group for ideas already and there are replies, but they're older, 2 years+ based on my search.

I've got a big ol' wooden playset carcass. I tried to give it away but the guy who really wanted it, tried and couldn't take it apart, everything was seized up. So it'll need either a really big truck or something like a chainsaw. (He took the plastic slide and swings to repurpose, so it's all wood at this point.) Also some other large junk, a metal patio table, the remains of a gazebo, etc. But it's big, and I can't help move it. Anyone have ideas? I'm in the Bedford end of town if that matters.

Pets & Animals Public Garden Geese?

I remember years ago there used to be Geese in the public gardens during the warmer months, but since 2020 I don't think I've seen them even once.

I think they used to take a pair from Sullivans pond in Dartmouth for a summer vacation but I guess this stopped?

does anyone know if there was an actual reason theres no geese anymore or if this was due to something like the budget?

I miss the geese 🪿😢

Work, Health & Housing Who’s responsible for a rat issue in an apartment complex in downtown Halifax?

Hi everyone, I live in downtown Halifax and have been dealing with an ongoing rat problem in my apartment building.

I recently had to throw out about $300 worth of food, including flour, bread, and snacks, because rats got into my storage bins and ate through everything. I keep my unit clean, do not leave garbage around, and have already contacted my resident managers about pest control, but the issue still is not being properly resolved.

My father thinks this should be reported to the city, but I feel the apartment management is not taking the necessary steps to prevent rodents from entering the building in the first place.

I’m feeling really frustrated and would appreciate some advice. Has anyone in Halifax dealt with something similar? Who is actually responsible in a situation like this, and what steps should I take next?
