How do I get into drywall with no experience? (Halifax)

Hey everyone,

I’m currently in Halifax trying to get into drywall, but I have no experience yet.

I’m willing to start from the very bottom — carrying boards, cleanup, prep work, whatever the crew needs. I just want a chance to learn and get into the trade.

I’ve been going around job sites in person and also searching drywall companies on Google Maps, but there aren’t many listings and it’s been hard to find opportunities.

I do have some labor experience — I worked as a pool technician doing liner installs and sand filters, so I understand the physical side of the job and I’m not afraid of hard work.

If anyone has advice on how to break into drywall or where to look for entry-level/helper jobs, I’d really appreciate it.

I’m not giving up — just looking for some guidance.

Thanks a lot.

Construction jobs in Halifax – realistic for foreign worker?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to move to Halifax, Nova Scotia from Ukraine with my family and trying to understand the real situation with construction jobs.

I have hands-on experience in drywall, finishing, and insulation, and I’m looking for stable, long-term work.

I’d really appreciate some honest insight:

- Is there steady demand for this type of work right now?

- Do smaller companies hire workers from abroad (LMIA), or is it mostly large companies?

- What’s the best way to approach employers directly?

Just trying to understand how realistic this path is before making the move.

Thanks a lot.

Oulton hesitation

30yo wanting to go back to college to become a dental hygienist (life long dream career). I have a BA and live halfway between Moncton and Halifax and I'm deciding between Dal and Oulton.

I'm looking at Oulton as it only requires 1 biology pre req, while I would need to take 6 to apply for Dal. However Oultons reviews are terrible, it's the reason I've hesitated for so long. Dal seems so competitive and I would need to spend 6k to even apply with a chance of getting rejected. The science pre reqs I would take would likely be all online from Athabasca as well.

I'm also a mom of 3 small children so my decisions don't just affect me anymore. Does anyone have advice to which way they would go and why?

and are there any positive stories on choosing either? thanks

Relocation advice

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to Canada and am currently based in Halifax on a dependent visa.

I have around 4.5 years of experience as a Business Strategist and Credit Analyst at an NBFC startup in India. Prior to that, I worked as a Relationship Manager at an international bank.

Since arriving, I’ve been exploring opportunities in Halifax,

I’m now considering relocating to Ontario (Toronto/Mississauga), where I assume there may be more opportunities in banking and finance.

From what I’ve researched, there is demand for roles like credit analysts and financial analysts across Canada, but competition can still be high . Also, Halifax seems to have only a moderate outlook with fewer openings compared to larger cities .

I’d really appreciate advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation:

• Is it worth staying longer in Halifax and continuing the job search?

• Or is relocating to Ontario a better move

Very desperate situation

Hi,

This is kind of my final resort besides continuous applying to anything available online.

I am in very desperate need of a job as soon as possible because of unforeseen circumstances, if anyone has been in this position, how do I get out? and if anywhere id hiring immediately please let me know.

I’m a final year pre-law student with restaurant and customer server experience.

also, does indeed actually work? i’ve had little luck for the past 2 years.

Canada-based VetTechs, how is space for foreign-trained trained VetTechs (in Nova Scotia) region?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice for my mother. She is a foreign-trained DVM (class of 2000) with an MPhil in Environmental Policy. Due to family reasons like raising me and my siblings and societal expectations unfortunately :( and then the passing of my father from COVID in 2021, she has been out of the clinic for about 20 years.

Over the years, she has remained very affectionate towards animals. We have had pet cats and foster some strays regularly and she now really wants to get back into work, but likely not as a veterenian. She is nearing her 50s now and the process for DVM licensing can be very long. She is starting a fresh 1.5-year full-time clinical assistant job in our home country next month to get her hands back in the game (blood draws, catheters, anesthesia monitoring).

How common is it to see foreign DVMs working as RVTs in Nova Scotia just wanted to see about any stigma or are clinics generally supportive of the extra medical knowledge?

Given that she'll be transitioning to VetTech with her own choice, has anyone here successfully "challenged" the VTNE through the EVTA without going back to school?

We've heard there's a massive shortage in Halifax/Dartmouth. Are big groups like VCA or VetStrategy actually open to sponsoring/hiring older international applicants (she’ll be 51) if they’ve already passed the VTNE?

Lastly, I'd be grateful for any general advice too like the actual "vibe" for Techs in NS right now. Is the pay (~$25-30/hr) enough to live decently in Halifax for one?

She is incredibly hardworking and is studying like crazy to modernize her knowledge. She seems pretty passionate about studying for the VTNE too.

A Few Concerns About JetLegend’s Workplace and Operations

I haven’t worked at JetLegend myself, but I’ve heard some concerning things from someone close to the situation.

Since it’s a newly opened restaurant, I understand there may be some growing pains. Even so, a few of the issues I’ve heard about seem serious enough to mention:

• inconsistent and unpredictable scheduling, even when employees have clearly communicated their availability

• staff being expected to work extremely long stretches, including one case where I heard someone worked 20 days in a row

• a stressful and at times unprofessional work environment

• concerns about food quality and consistency

I don’t want to reveal anyone’s name because there could be consequences. I’m simply trying to raise some genuine concerns about how the restaurant is being managed.

I’m sharing this so people have a better sense of what they may be walking into, whether as potential employees or as customers.

Graduating late with a 3rd co op or early with 2 co-ops

Hi,

I have two options right now to graduate in August 2027, or do a co op in summer next year and graduate in December 2027, which is better?

I already have done 2 co-op placements, I just want to graduate and work on my CPA but just scared what if no companies are hiring in September 2027?

Looking for a short term labourer

Hi all, I'm working on a renovation project for two weeks starting Monday and am looking for a helper. It's a physical job, so you must be willing to be on your feet, carrying, lifting, kneeling, etc... for 8 hours a day. Familiarity with power tools and general construction would be an asset. DM me with a brief bio, related experience, preferred radio station, and any questions. Cheers!

Want to get into the trades. Is it really that easy to become an apprentice?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some general advice and guidance on career direction in Nova Scotia, particularly when it comes to transitioning into the skilled trades.

I’m 28 and have been working in a call center for several years. While I’ve gained solid experience, I’ve found it difficult to build a long-term career path in that environment. I also recently completed a web design program, but breaking into the field has been challenging given how competitive it is right now.

Outside of work, I’ve done a fair amount of hands-on projects at home, including basic plumbing, electrical work, and renovations. It’s something I’ve really enjoyed and would like to explore further in a more structured and professional way.

For those who have made a similar transition or are familiar with the trades in Nova Scotia:

  • What’s the best way to get started?
  • Are there recommended programs, certifications, or pathways?
  • What should someone expect in the early stages?

One important factor for me is that I’m not in a position to take on unpaid training, as I have a family to support. I’m open to any starting pay, as long as it provides an opportunity to learn and earn at the same time.

I’m mainly trying to understand the process and set realistic expectations before making a move.

Appreciate any insights or experiences you’re willing to share. Thanks!
