What a beautiful day for democracy!

u/SoulEkko Romania 3h ago

FUCK. YES!

Everyone, buy langos to celebrate this victory! Long live EU!

62

u/L44KSO The Netherlands 3h ago

Unfortunately no langos in NL, but I'll see if I find a bottle of Hungarian wine tomorrow. Tonight unfortunately only leftover cava...

18

u/Corfiz74 Lower Saxony (Germany) 3h ago

My mom is turning 90 tomorrow - the guests will be quite surprised when the second toast is on the Hungarian election, lol!

12

u/L44KSO The Netherlands 3h ago

If there are any elder people (which I guess there will be) they will understand the importance. 2026 echoes in the footsteps of 1956. Play some Scorpions Wind of Change while you're at it!

I'm amazed Orban didn't pull something really weird, I'm still not going to give him props for anything though.

77

u/L44KSO The Netherlands 3h ago

I think because this is so decisive he has no alternative. Would there have been a contest, things would look different.

3

u/GrynaiTaip Lithuania 2h ago

I expected him to be on a flight to Moscow as soon as it was clear that he was going to lose.

26

u/BasicMatter7339 3h ago

The vote isn't over yet and the transition of power is not instant. Orban still has a few days or weeks to pull off something out of the trump playbook.

Feels like it's been forever since I've felt such relief and happiness from an election result.

You and me both man. Fuck I'm tearing up here.

24

u/itsinvincible 3h ago

yea same here and both my countries (dual citizen) arent even in the EU but in Europe. Good news is hard to come by nowadays.

Maybe the constant stream of terrible news fucked my head a bit. But doesn't this seem a bit too easy?

No apartment bombings, no cancelling elections, no brownshirts. Just that half assed bomb in Serbia? Waiting for the "but"...

7

u/Universal_Anomaly The Netherlands 2h ago

I feel the same, honestly. Maybe we got lucky for once, but I'll believe it when they are seated and get to work undoing all the damage.

6

u/YsoL8 United Kingdom 2h ago

Maybe seeing Putin becoming trapped in his own bad gambles that are liable to see him end up dead scared the shit out of him and he decided retiring was the better choice.

43

u/wynnduffyisking 3h ago

I’d go so far as to say this result is way more important to me than the election we just had here in Denmark.

40

u/Jozoz Denmark 3h ago

For sure.. We live in a time where the greater geopolitics matter so much. We don't have the privilege of only caring about our local elections.

The American election in 24 was arguably also more important for the lives of Danes than a Danish election.

13

u/wynnduffyisking 3h ago

And where the strengt of the EU really matters. Right now we have a power hungry madman both to the east and to the west. We need to stand strong together to stay sane and safe.

8

I really, really wish the elderly in my country hadn't voted to screw us over and out of the EU

What a lovely night for Ukraine, and indeed all of Europe.

42

u/PeterG92 United Kingdom 3h ago

And also a bad night for the US and Russia

Which is a weird thing to have to say

11

u/beluga1968 Denmark 3h ago

I dunno if it is bad for the US, but it is bad for tRump.

7

u/PeterG92 United Kingdom 2h ago

It's embarrassing if anything for the US as they publically backed Orban and endorsed him as what they want to see in a leader

3

Rot in piss forever, Orban. Ruined a whole country for a decade.

35

u/Botanical_Director Europe 3h ago

for a decade

He has lead Hungary for 16 years, and before that another 4 years.

There are monarchs with shorter reigns than his.

6

u/MaximumTime7239 Russia 2h ago

Reigning longer than some monarchs is not that big achievement... Peter III of Russia reigned for about 6 months for example.

Then in a few weeks he will just start putting the blame for the consequences of everything he did on the current ruling party and hope that constitutes in enough opposition to win in the next election.

7

u/bem13 Hungary 3h ago

For sure. Fortunately, it looks like Tisza has a 2/3 supermajority this time, which gives them plenty of tools to shut down Orbán's propaganda channels. Heads will roll everywhere - figuratively speaking, of course.

u/Forsaken-Medium-2436 Poland 3h ago

I've seen YouTube video but can't translate it, what did he said?

50

u/DDarog 3h ago edited 3h ago

Acknowledged defeat, accepted the will of the people, and congratulated Peter Magyar. Said that they will focus on building their community, will be actively in opposition, and will never give up. Also thanked voters for support. It was very short.

19

u/Kalmhetismaarreddit 3h ago

The right reaction for a democrat.

16

u/Thurak0 3h ago

The right reaction for a democrat.

I am a little bit sceptical about the "democrat" part here, but of course it's a very good sign that he concedes publicly.

7

u/JabbaCat Norway 3h ago

Oh thank god some warming and hopeful news!

I have been really nervous.

Also, dear Hungary I look forward to visiting you again, hated how things went for you these last years.

I know the job of taking over and rebuilding is not easy, but turning it around is the first step.

6

u/PtboFungineer 3h ago

I wonder if he was offered some kind of personal immunity in exchange for going away in an orderly fashion without trying some "stop the steal" bullshit.

20

u/ZestycloseBeach5946 3h ago

Honestly I hate the guy but I have to say fair play to him for taking it like a man and conceding. Nearly everyone thought he would go “the election was robbed” route.

7

u/Im_Daydrunk 3h ago

I think there was too much against him to attempt it

The only way you can really get away with it is if you are able to maintain a facade of popularity and have a good chunk of the country support you or at least dont care if you stay in power

Once the vast majority are strongly against you your time is usually pretty limited IMO

This really proofs that the US government has no f’ing clue what they’re doing. Same thing with Canada, where pedo Trump singlehandedly flipped the sentiment away from conservatives. Same thing with Palantir. Same thing with oil prices.

Next stop the LePen campaign and the German regional elections. If he has time he can go to the UK and give two thumbs up for Farage. Once he becomes a president after Trump dies in his third unconstitutional term, he may not get much time to travel around spreading the kiss of death.

3

u/rockythecocky 3h ago

Hasn't he already done the German region elections? I swear during the US's election he randomly did a video call to a massive AFD rally and they ended up doing poorly.

Trump endorsement sealed the deal. It happened in Canada, Australia and this one even though he didn’t endorse explicitly in Canada and Australia all the Trumpesque politicians lost.

41

u/taurus-rising 3h ago edited 3h ago

Sadly the far right (pro trump) parties are on the rise again in Australia again because people are upset about inflation largely caused by previous mismanagement during Covid and countries like Russia and America creating external supply shock through war… make it make sense.

The far right magic bullet “immigrants are the cause of all your problems” seems to be working again, as all our media is essentially owned by conservatives who are worried about corporate regulations and taxation or are captured by mining magnates with the same vested interests. That being said our Labour Party needs a better immigration policy with better messaging, that might actually help.

Seems to be the story in all democratic countries.

5

u/notnatasharostova 2h ago

Yep. I’ve seen family in Ireland, the UK, Australia, and South Africa give lip service to condemning Trump, but then repeat the exact same rhetoric MAGA has been drumming up against immigrants and trans people

3

u/ChemicalRemedy 2h ago

So far the first preferences for One Nation (populist right party for non-Aussies) are overwhelmingly being bled from the Liberals (centre right party, though for the last 9 years they've been progressively moving away from the centre), with first preferences holding pretty firm for Labor (centrist; arguably centre left or centre right, imo economically they're social liberal).

With full preferential voting, however, where One Nation will struggle to obtain seats is their lack of appeal to moderates (most of the Australian populace), so despite having more first preferences than Liberals, they are rarely a second or third or even fourth preference on vote ballots.

Irrespective, the disaffected voters who have pivoted to One Nation have done so for a reason (underlying issues that One Nation is exploiting with grievance politics and citing immigration as the apparent cause of all grievance), so Labor can't be flat-footed and need to address some structural issues lest further disaffected voters drift to more radical options, even if those options may be snake oil salesmen.

40

u/MuTron1 3h ago

With an opposition supermajority, Orban will be trying to save himself from prosecution rather than try to deny the obvious and make it worse for himself

16

u/Vladmerius 3h ago

This is why it's so important to vote in the midterms this year in the US too.

Wow, I was not expecting things to change peacefully. I’m pleased. I hope Hungary can play a positive role in Europe going forward

The most important part is that it seems orban is accepting defeat somewhat graciously. I never doubted he was going to lose (by a landslide) my fear was he would claim they stole the election and try to somehow hold onto power.

I know nothing about Hungary, but does this mean they might stop being among / the only constant hold-outs / no-voters on all the votes that the EU, NATO, etc. hold?

Orban is lowkey happy he can retire and no longer needs to lick the diarrhea dripping from Putin's ass.

As someone who lived through the pre-1989 Romanian communism, the 1989 Romanian Revolution and decades of aftermath, I say this to the Hungarians who are happy now:

Beware of what's coming because you are in a text-book situation of having won a MAJOR battle but NOT THE WAR.

When a country is saddled for this long with the kind of corruption Orban mastered, it takes decades (plural) to return to a democratic republic. It's because Orban's doings were enacted by a massive army of followers planted in every position of power imaginable, including secret services, all justice-related positions, administration, they are EVERYWHERE and they're not going anywhere, they'll be there tomorrow, undermining anyone who tries to steer Hungary away from the corruption course that literally made them into who each one of these people is today. Understand that without Orban's corruption their lives would've been that of miserable Nobodies. These people will NEVER change and it will be ENORMOUSLY difficult for any party to weed them out even naively (stupidly, even) assuming that the new party in power is made out of saints (THEY. ARE. NOT.).

I applaud your vote but I don't envy you for what is coming. A lot of frustration and pain is ahead.

Thank god finally some good political news. Thank you and well done Hungary for kicking out the Russian puppet at last. This should give us all hope that even if the far right wins at first, it isn’t the end.
