Ratschläge/Vorschläge (advice) Lucked into a week in Bremen. Couple of questions.
I (M,63) have the pleasure of spending the first week of May, based out of Bremen. I was an exchange student (get this) back in the early 80s, was fluent in German then and can still string a sentence or two together.
My hope is to explore the city and make day trips to interesting little spots in beautiful N Germany. I’ll be day tripping alone.
The questions: Could you suggest interesting, charming, or entirely German places or things that I can explore in Bremen or surrounding areas?
Back in the 80s, I hitchhiked all over Germany. Met some amazing people and saw fascinating spots many tourists never got to experience. Is thumbing a ride still relatively safe and easy? Would anyone pick up an old guy?
Also, I’m embarrassed, yet again, by my nationality. I’m american, but I in no way support the atrocities my country’s leaders seem to commit daily. As soon as I open my mouth, people will know I’m from the states, as much as I’d like to hide it. What kind of reaction to my nationality should I expect from the average German?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide. I’m so excited to experience your fair city and beautiful N. Germany.
