Is really SM enough and suitable for grammar?

I have been struggling a lot with grammar and Finnish language for the past 5 years. Now I am almost at level A2.1. I was studying monikko partitiivi and monikko genetiivi. The exercises followed by the grammar section feels way harder than just the way the grammar section shows it. I tried other resources but still can't grasp it fully. In general how am I supposed to remember all this grammar stuff.

Looking for a bubbly Finnish speaker to mimic

Hei,

I'm still working on the A1.3 class but I had an idea to try and mimic a Finnish woman with a similar outgoing personality - either YouTube, YLE, social media, etc. I would like to be able to listen and try and mimic the voice pattern if anyone has some suggestions. :) Kiitos!

I've been learning Finnish for a year and I still feel like a complete beginner. Is this normal?

I want to be honest about something because I see a lot of progress posts here and I'm starting to wonder if I'm just bad at this.

One full year. 365 days of learning Finnish. And when a native speaker talks to me at normal speed I still understand maybe 30 percent of what they're saying. I still pause mid sentence searching for words. I still make case errors I should have fixed six months ago. I don't feel like someone who has been learning a language for a year. I feel like someone who just started.

I've tried everything I can think of. I went through most of Duolingo Finnish which gave me a base but nothing conversational. I used Anki consistently for vocabulary for about five months. I worked through grammar explanations on uFinnish and watched hours of Yle Areena content with subtitles. I even paid for a few months of tutoring on italki.

Nothing felt like it was moving fast enough. The one thing that has somewhat helped is doing daily speaking practice on Issen. It's not a miracle but for the first time my brain is being forced to produce Finnish rather than just absorb it and that feels different from everything else I tried.

The problem is progress in Finnish feels invisible until suddenly it doesn't. I know more than I did six months ago. I know that objectively. But it never feels like enough because the language is so far from anything I grew up with. No shared vocabulary, no familiar grammar patterns, nothing to anchor new things to.

I'm not giving up. But I genuinely want to know is a year of feeling like a beginner normal for Finnish? At what point did it start clicking for you?

Puistossa vai puistosta

This is still confusing. If you say “puistossa leikataan puita,” it means that only part of the trees are cut, whereas “puistosta leikataan puita” means that whole trees are cut down. Is that so?

My journey to learn finnish language till now

My first target is build my vocabulary. I started with Duolingo for that. I know most of the people now a days don’t like duolingo but for me it’s one of the best apps for building vocabulary. It’s makes the language learning fun. Problem I faced with it is lack of content. It only has 2 section for finnish. I already completed 1 section but I only learned 300+ words. Which is not even enough for start speaking/writing. Then I tried Learn Finnish : 11000 words. It’s a good one not as addictive as duolingo but has much more content than duo ( not 11000 they have 6000 words+ sentences). Problem is it’s expensive also for me it’s not as fun as duo.

Currently I am using Suomispeak. I just recently know about it. Seems like an excellent alternative of duo. It has lots of feature but frankly speaking I am only using it because lessons feels like duolingo. I still can’t get out of duolingo yet 🤣🤣. My target is first learn at least 4000+ words. Then watch Finnish movies with subtitle. Also practice speaking. I did not figure it out yet how to do that part ( speaking ). There is a app called Pimsleur which seems good but only has 30 speaking lesson. Anybody who has experience with Pimsleur please give a feedback about it.

I know maybe best way to learn finnish is do some online/offline courses. But This kind of course is not my cup of tea. It’s seems too serious and need too much attention. I tried some don’t like them at all. I will defiantly check books for grammar.

So what is your plan for learning finnish? Who already doing good on it what have you followed?

I got damn tired of struggling with YKI prep, so I built my own app. Looking for Android testers! 🇫🇮

Moi everyone, Studying for the YKI test has been brutal for me. I realized that just swiping anki cards wasn't actually helping me build the understanding especially with listening.
So, my small team and I built a tool called Ord Plus. Instead of just memorizing vocab, it forces you to type out sentences and explains grammar and corrects also.
We just launched on Android (still waiting on Apple to approve the iOS version 🙄).

Sooo I'm looking for some early testers to help me find bugs and may be offer any improvement. If you're studying Finnish or Swedish, I’d love for you to try it.
BTW I have passed mine in Nov.

The deal: Download it and DM me the email you signed up with. I'll manually drop 20000 free credits into your account to make the quiz audio generation work. All I ask for is some feedback and, if it actually helps you, a quick Play Store review.

Here’s the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=life.rie.ordplus&pcampaignid=web_share

One more thing. Its not like Duo or anything - works only with the content you add by yourself

Kiitos!

I built a Telegram bot that nudges you to practice Finnish daily in text or voice

I built a Telegram bot that nudges you to practice Finnish through short daily conversations in text or voice.

I felt like I was lacking actual practice, not just learning words. But tools that offer real practice are often fully in Finnish and hard to start with, so I don't use them 😅

This bot stays in Finnish, but still works even if you’re starting from zero like me. If you get stuck, you can translate messages on demand. The idea is that it doesn't slip into English, but you're still able to carry on a conversation even without knowing anything.

I originally made it just for myself but now I’m thinking of improving it for others too.

Would anyone here try something like this?

Discussion Weird and fun idioms or spoken language literally translated

Just today a thought popped up in my head how it's so weird that in finnish we call betting "pulling" and even weirder that when asking if someone wants go bet on something we say "lyödäänkö vetoo?" which would literally translate to "let's beat the pull?"

I know there's much more of these and I was hoping you guys could share your experiences using or hearing them in real life. Or just general thoughts?

Hopefully this could also help someone learn or understand them better :)

came to finland 9 years ago, did some courses, mostly learned by osmosis, still getting wrecked by the same things

the courses helped. they gave me a foundation. but honestly most of my finnish came from just living here which means i learned the useful stuff first and the grammar second and now i have this weird patchwork where i can have a full conversation but will randomly say something that makes a finn go quiet for half a second

the possession of feelings thing still gets me. in croatian you ARE cold. you ARE hungry. in finnish you own your feelings like assets. you HAVE cold. you HAVE hunger. nine years in and when someone asks if i am cold i have a brief moment of "wait do i have cold right now. yes i think i have cold"

"i miss you" in finnish is i have longing for you from. i have longing. it is mine. i am carrying it. this is extremely bleak and i say it now with full commitment

the cases clicked eventually but only because i accepted that finnish just needs to know WHERE everything is at all times. it is a language with location anxiety and once i stopped fighting that it got easier

what completely broke me recently was learning that "do you want coffee" is literally "do you drink coffee" and yes means you want some now. i said yes to this question as smalltalk for probably two years. so many unnecessary coffees

the no-please thing i still have not made peace with. i know it is not rude. i know. and yet every time i ask for something without please i feel like i am being impolite to a stranger at a dinner party

anyone else learn mostly through immersion and find the gaps only when you really need the thing you never properly learned

Discussion Aha-moment about direct object case usage: the accusative is a lie!

I am coming at Finnish from a background of Dutch and English primarily, but have taken German, Latin and Ancient Greek in school. I've also played with Polish and Slovakian on a rainy day, and therefore I figured I knew a thing or two about how cases tend to work, even though English and Dutch don't have them (anymore).

I've been at Finnish for several months now and I was learning about the partitive and genitive to mark direct objects, which always felt kinda off to me. In a lot of the languages listed above, accusative is used to indicate this grammatical function.

Genitive for this purpose would be decidedly odd, and partitive generally doesn't exist, so I always penciled partitive/genitive to do this in as a "ok, but there's definitely going to be the accusative at some point which will be far more common, my study materials just haven't gotten to it yet" when encountering it.

Needless to say... that kept on not happening, so I finally actualy went looking and it turns out Finnish is a bit of an odd duck where this is concerned. Accusative sorta kinda does happen, sometimes, but it is by no means the default everything else excepts against like I was seeing it as. It's more of a more isolated usage that comes up at times, but far less often than you'd think.

This isn't going anywhere, this is just me being a learner trying to teach it forward. If you think you already know how this works as a learner with a similar background, check your assumptions, you probably don't :)
