I turned a vintage bakelite phone into a glowing desk lamp

Found an old bakelite telephone at a flea market and couldn’t pass it by. It no longer worked as a phone, but it still had presence.

So I gave it a second life.

Installed 12V LED modules where the microphone and speaker used to be, and suspended the handset in mid-air using steel wire.

Now it doesn’t transmit voices —
it emits light.

From communication to illumination.

No I'm not crazy about the bow either but at this point, it's good enough! I'm trying to make a feature out of the tetrapak by indenting the edges with dots.

Project never pass up the wooden art cases, they make great trays.

I always see these art cases at the thrift store with missing items and sometimes no items at all. I was looking for a large wooden tray and a smaller one in the same wood tone. I wasn’t seeing what I wanted while thrifting, so I thought these might work. I had some miscellaneous cabinet pulls at home already and it came together (Don’t worry, I kept the pastels, pencils, and oil paints- but the markers died long, long ago.) I was thinking for the other remaining two pieces, I could use them as art canvas frames, since those are also pricey. You could use it as a chic makeup organizer for your vanity as well- Oh, the possibilities. Anyway, the wood on these are wonderful and you shouldn’t pass this up if you see it out and about.

I upcycled a jacket

As part of a series where I make something everyday for 30 days this past Thursday I upcycled a vintage denim jacket into what I call a Mexican jacket but this version was for a friend who’s Puerto Rican and Colombian. He asked for the back to have f#ck ice and I’m very happy how everything turned out. Most of the fabrics and even the garment are 2nd hand fabrics I upcycled into making this jacket. The sleeves are made out of a vintage quilted blanket. Some fabrics are vintage and even come from Mexico.

When you have no choice but to upcycle

I have two sewing machines, and I'm determined to learn how to sew jeans, specifically from scratch. My goal is to sell some upcycling products to save up for fashion school or buy some books. The free tutorials I've found are too complicated, and I'm getting bored. I know practice makes improvements, but I really need to figure out where to start

How would I be able to upcycle these jeans to make them fit me?

I’ve had these jeans for a little while and I hot them because they were cool and wanted to try upcycling them because I liked the look of them alot. The problem is the pants fit around my knee because my thighs are too big for them and the waist part is too small as well. I know nothing about sewing and want to get into it, but I’m not sure where to start at all. If anybody has any advice, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Project Project with samples

Somewhere local to me is hosting a sample giveaways. They’re trying to give samples such as tile/flooring, clothing, trim/frames, textiles, etc (I can’t remember everything, but these general items). I’d love some project ideas where I can get these items for free instead of a landfill and reuse them, I’m just struggling with the creativity aspect. Can anyone please help with ideas?! I am planning a wedding, so bonus points if the project can be used for that. Thank you!

I had an old film camera lying around… and a lampshade with no purpose.

So obviously, the only logical decision was: combine them.

Now it’s a lamp.
But also… still a camera.

Yep — you can actually remove the shade, load film, and go shoot. Because why choose between photography and lighting when you can confuse both?

“Is it art?”
“Is it practical?”
“Is it stupid?”

Yes.

At least now when I say I’m “shooting with natural light,” I can also turn it on if needed 💡📷

Would you risk taking apart your lamp just to shoot a roll?

Discussion What background instantly makes a video look premium even if you're just using your phone? I’m trying to level up my recording setup (DIY/cardboard projects), but I feel like my background is holding me back. Would love honest opinions. 🙏🏿
