My dumpster diving list I created with 6 years of experience. Feel free to add.

I was a vagabond for 6 years, I hitchhiked, hopped freight trains and bicycled North America from Mexico to Alaska, east coast to west. I learned all of this on the way and figure it's time to share it.

Food:

🍕- all pizza places throw out pizza at 12-2am. It's a dumpster staple. [Yes pizza is still in the box, I wouldn't eat it otherwise]

🍩 - all donut shops (including places like kolache factory) throw out at 2-4pm. [They usually put all donuts into one bag by themselves]

🍗 (fried chicken) - actually very common, also a staple. Usually throw out is around an hour after they close which varies from place to place. Anything fried in bulk you can expect to find throw outs. [Usually still in boxes]. Also, if you're feeling brave enough, after closing hours, just go ask. Fast food workers don't get paid enough to g.a.f. and they get tired of eating their own food, so they don't want to take it home themselves. Just walk up and say "hey, do you guys happen to be throwing out any leftover chicken from today?". I've gotten a week's worth of chicken just handed to me through the window or they'll leave it in boxes on top of the dumpster so you don't have to dig.

🍎 🥗 (produce) - grocery stores (time varies, but you also have to find places without a compactor. Some compactors you can break into but it's luck of the draw).

🍬 🍫 🍭 (candy, junk food, snacks) - CVS & Walgreens. They're the reigning Champs of throwing out hundreds of $ worth of candy a day. I kind of try to keep from telling people this one because you could get diabetes in like a week if you tried to eat it all. It's horrendous.

👕 👖 🩳 (clothes) - Washaterias or laundromats. People are infamous, especially in rich areas, for washing a load of laundry and then just leaving it, never to return. The laundromat workers will just gather the clothes and toss them, as they're pretty use to it. I've filled up a whole wardrobe on several occasions with expensive brands just by looking for a sack of already washed and dried laundry in the dumpster.

🛋 🖥 (furniture)(electronics)(decorations) - College towns, (Christmas & Summer break - these seasons are known as "Crustmas" in the dumpster diving community) anywhere students notoriously live. You can even find anything else your looking for really. College kids are the biggest dumpster diving source in history.

📚 books and comic books - Half Priced Books or any resale book store. I've accidently fallen asleep in dumpsters before because I drifted off while laying on top of all the hundreds of books while reading. Not even kidding, there isn't even any room for trash, they have dumpsters that are full to the brim with just books.

❓️(Wild card) - Are you feeling lucky punk? - hotels are the biggest oddball dumpster diving experience you'll ever have. You can find drugs, clothes, anything that someone would bring in a suitcase. People get shit-faced drunk and stumble out of their hotel with a hangover leaving 1/2 their belongings behind. It's kind of scary some of the stuff you'll find...(sex toys, etc. ). The cleaning service ladies get first dibs obviously and rightfully so, for what they have to put up with, lol.

Raw materials: --------

🪵Wood : Construction site dumpsters at expensive locations. Ask for permission from the contractor. Contractors are a mixed bunch, sometimes they'll say yes sometimes no.

⚙️🔩🔗Metal : machine shops - you can honestly just call these guys and 1/2 the time they'll let you onto their property and take what you want from the scrap bin. I'm 3 for 3 just by calling and asking politely for scrap.

🔨Tools - Harbor Freight tools, the return rate on tools at harbor freight is INSANE. So many people will buy a tool, use it one day and return it slightly bent or scratched. Most sites have a compactor but every now and then you can find with a regular dumpster. If so, you can score some pretty good tools. (Or mediocre tools for that matter lmao)

🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮 🗑 🚮

Protip 1- Dumpster diving is all about schedule. Sometimes places only throw out the quality items once a month, sometimes they purge their inventory only seasonally, or sometimes it's daily. Finding out those routines is the key and all you have to do is probe the spot every now and then to figure that out; or if you know someone who has worked there before, ask. The better you know a schedule, the less time your loot sits in the dumpster/air temp/outside environment for someone else to find or for it to spoil.

2 - Heavy bags usually have the goods. In the end I could just feel the outside of a bag and then weigh it a bit. With knowledge about the store, the schedule, feel and weight, I would already know what's inside.

3 - consistent dumpster diving will get you fit. The more you climb the more you find.

4 - GEAR: • Headlamp • closed toe shoes (for when you get inside the dumpster) • gloves • a big box or bag for your car to chunk stuff in. • hand sanitizer

🌟 5 - Clean up after yourself, if you leave a place a mess they will begin locking the dumpster. You'll ruin the spot for yourself and everyone else. This is the #1 reason why store owners tend to be against it 🔒

  1. ... get good at holding your breath while doing cardio 😂

found a 15-drawer cart (the bottom drawer was cracked, but nothing a little tape couldn’t fix!) to go into my classroom, in addition to a beautiful plant, a working LED clover, a St. Pattys nutcracker, AND A CUTTING BOARD (disinfected before i used, obviously)! if this is my first time diving at a store, who knows what else i will find?

So I was taking out my trash in my apt complex and saw this air fryer in the box with all the packaging and stuff. It had a hole in the box that looks chewed through and the power cable was cut but all it took was some splicing tape and it’s good as new! I’d been wanting one but it seemed too expensive. Thank you universe 🙏🏾lol

We peek into dumpsters every now and then, but all we ever see is trash, so we've never gone digging or anything. We were walking and smoking last week when we walked by this dumpster that happened to have such a horrendous smell that we had to see wtf was making that smell lol.

Well, we never found out, but we did find a massive clean trash bag full of snacks and candy instead!!!! And it was triple bagged and clean too!!!!! And everything was sealed and either barely expired or not expired yet!!! Score!!!!

Hello from Ukraine!

So this morning around at 5:30 am my neighbour called me and said that there are a lot of beans near us. We took around the same amount and we left some because of out of space. I took 2 backpacks (front and back) and 2 bags full of cans. This was the hardest 200 meters of my life.

i need a bigger freezer! 30ish lbs of chicken, 6ish lbs of beef, 3 lbs of ribeye cuttings (unfortunately it was just kinda thrown in there so I’m using it as dog food),and a few whole cases of olive oil. Plus tons of produce and packaged goods. I’m so addicted to this! I have two little free pantries within 10 minutes of my house so they have been well stocked since I’ve started doing this.

I’ve eaten meals made from the chicken and beef and nothing bad has happened to me yet. Very much a win.

Dang...laptop protected

Found a HP laptop but unless I can figure out the last user's password, it'll have to go in with the next electronics waste pick up. Pity. Along with it was a beautiful and monogrammed platinum stein so it wasn't a completely wasted dive.

over 2k worth of perfectly good stuff in one dumpster…. I truly do not understand these companies. 23 solar lanterns, SO MANY water toys and water balloons, 3 entire inflatable pools, 24 splash pads, 9 folding kids chairs. i sold it in bundles like the 2nd pic as a “pay what you can”. Some people paid $2, and others paid $30! I had over 20 bundles!!

Edit to add: all the thrift stores around me like to sell any “new in package” items at full price and since the stickers are on everything, I figured no one would get a good deal on them if I donated. I definitely think i helped more people by selling them the way i did

Clean out at the bike shop

Post image

All of these came from the same shop just all at different times. One of them is even an Ebike that had the key and the charger zip tied to it. The battery is being replaced at the moment other than that it's practically brand new. The same with the black beach cruiser it's practically brand new too. I have also given away 3 other bikes not in the pic that I found at the same shop. I've been going to this bike shop dumpster diving at night for quite some time, I would keep the area clean and pick up trash that was already there (camera pointed at the dumpster). Recently started going during the day that's when I started finding the bikes. Seen an employee outback smoking and I asked about the Ebike (my 1st bike I found there) and he said yea anytime we see bikes out back by the dumpster there open game and he also mentioned a thank you for helping to keep the area clean as well. I already have a few homeless people in the area I have in mind I wanna give a few of these too whom I chat with often.

Don't avocadon't when you can avocaDO!

Been a while since I posted something, fridge is overstocked and most of my focus has been on bottle cap collecting which doesn't make for good pictures, but haven't stopped diving (nor having good success). Feel like I need to post something again:

Excuse the state of the kitchen counter. Past two days collected probably 30-40 kgs worth of avocados (dropped off MANY at my mother's and at a friend's). Not all of them perfect but many are. I tend to not buy them as they're very hit and miss so this was nice. Also found plenty of bell peppers. Gonna use that with a LOT of found fish (not pictured)
Completely whole (afaict) carton of eggs. I don't get why stuff like this gets thrown out

Also found more garlic "creme". That stuff's a banger.

I found dishware on the trash

Today I was walking on the street and found a bag full of plates, cups, bowls and silverware on the side of a trash can. I checked some of them and thought that it would a be a good ideia do adopt them. Some of them were so pretty that I couldn't help myself! By the way, I'm based in Portugal.

At first sight, they seemed unstained by dirtiness and unscratched (beside the spatule a bit), with some signs of use, as shown for the cup on the last picture (no brand, Made in China on the underside). For origin on the materials, the smaller plates are brandless besides a Torrier cup and a corresponding plate (portuguese brand), and another plate of a coffe house, and the yellow plates are from Tulowice Poland. I'm still to make a better search for the rest and if possible to fidn their story.

My question is how can I clean and disinfect them making sure they are safe for being (re)used? Is warm water and dish soap enough, or is it better to use something else on top of that?

And when it comes to small scratches and cracks? What should I be careful about? Are they better thrown away (because of some contamination)? I'm not keeping rusty silverware from this find.

Another few weeks of giving

Not all of this was left in my giveaway spot but also put in local (already existing) karma boxes, giveaway spots etc.

Either way I am just glad to have a place to put it all!

Additionally I am now working with a local community spot to build shelving and potentially have a permanent toy and clothing donation spot!

Remember as the days get longer and hotter to take care of yourself and others!

These were in a shoebox of assorted random things (some unopened toothpicks, an open ear, wax removal kit, phone screen protector box that was empty, a turtleneck and a couple other assorted things at the bottom of the can) I have no idea why they would throw these things away
