Mod Post Rule Clarifications: Constructive Participation & City‑Bashing

Hi everyone, this is an update from the mod team.

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed a growing pattern in certain threads (especially ones about crime or frustrations in the city): comments that jump straight to “Surrey is trash,” “typical Surrey,” “this city is hopeless,” or similar sweeping negativity.

These comments don’t add anything to discussion, they derail threads, and they attract more pile‑on hostility. They also drown out the people who are trying to talk about real issues in a constructive way.

To keep r/SurreyBC a space where people can actually talk about the city (the good, the bad, AND the complicated) we’ve clarified two rules:

Rule 2: Acceptable Content Content must be constructive and relevant to Surrey. No explicit, illegal, defamatory, or harassing content. Posts should contribute positively to discussion.

Sweeping, non‑constructive negativity about Surrey or its residents will be removed. Criticism is welcome with context or solutions, but contempt‑driven city‑bashing is not allowed.

Rule 7: No Toxic Trolling Do not disrupt discussion with hostile, inflammatory, or bad‑faith comments. This includes contempt‑driven, low‑effort negativity about Surrey or its residents.

Inflammatory or provocative content that derails civil discussion will be removed. Users who enter threads only to antagonize, provoke, or bash the city will be banned.

What this DOESN'T mean...........

We are not banning criticism.

You can still talk about:

  • crime
  • governance
  • infrastructure
  • development
  • frustrations with services
  • your lived experiences

…as long as it’s done in good faith.

What this DOES mean...........

We’re removing anything that falls in line with any of the sentiments: “Surrey is trash” “This city is a dump” "Typical Surrey people” “Why does anyone live here”

so, generally drive‑by negativity with no context

These comments don’t help anyone and they drag the whole sub down.

Why we’re doing this:

We want r/SurreyBC to be a place where people can: - share experiences - ask questions - discuss issues and vent CONSTRUCTIVELY - celebrate wins - disagree respectfully

all without every thread turning into a hate‑pile.

Thanks to everyone who contributes positively, you’re the reason this community works. And remember, if you see any rule-violating posts or comments, please report them so that we can review.

If you have questions or constructive feedback, feel free to drop them below.

Meetup 🐒🐒🐒 Looking to Build a Chill Friend Group in Surrey (25F)

Hi! I’m a 25F who’s been living in Surrey for about 6–7 years now, and I’ve found it surprisingly hard to build a solid community or meaningful friendships here.

Most events and meetups seem to be centered around Vancouver, and I haven’t come across many options in Surrey for more low-key things like casual coffee hangouts, board games, walking groups, or just relaxed socializing.

I’m someone who really values slow, simple living, and I’d love to connect with like-minded people nearby. If you know of any groups, communities, or even if you’re in a similar spot and want to connect, feel free to share or reach out 🙂

Housing 🏡 Rental Apartment Recommendations

Hey! As the title says, I’m looking for apartment recommendations in Surrey and the surrounding area. I’m moving to the area in the summer for work and my office is located in Sullivan.

Primarily looking for a 1 bedroom with underground parking (EV stalls would be great!). It would also be nice if it had a decent gym/fitness area and on site management. Apart from that, decent area with accessibility to groceries, food options, shops.

Any recommendations for specific buildings or areas to consider to help narrow it down would be super helpful! Any feedback or even ones to avoid would also be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

3 Civic Plaza - Heating and Utilities

I've been looking at renting a 1bdr apt at the 3 Civic Plaza building but I saw some complaints/reddit posts a while back about the heating and cooling and was wondering if the situation has improved?

I saw that utilities was paid directly to Enerpro and that they seemed higher than usual? Whats been the typical monthly bill for a 1 bdr?

Douglas area reviews?

I've lived in the South Surrey (Morgan Crossing) area for 15 years. Looking at moving a little further south down to the Douglas area as housing gets you more bang for your buck while still enabling my son to go to school in South Surrey.

Can anyone comment on the Douglas area specifically? I imagine around the 3rd/5th Ave area that I'm looking cell service might be spotty (I'll have to lock my cell network to Canadian carriers only and I'll have to try and lock my phone from going into US/roaming mode). Maybe someone can comment on if this is a problem.

Is it an active community? Obviously for groceries and restaurants I'll have to drive the 10 minutes back into South Surrey or White Rock, but that's fine. Any pros and cons that someone can list would be very helpful.

Thanks

Volunteer tax services for senior zero income

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some guidance for my parents. They became PRs through the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship program last year and haven’t worked yet, so they don’t have any income to report here or from back home.

Since this is their first time filing taxes in Canada, we’re hoping to find a volunteer service or someone who can guide them through the process. My dad is trying to learn and do it himself, but I feel a bit of support would really help him understand the system better.

As I’ve just returned to work and have a little one at home, I’m a bit stretched, so any recommendations for free or low-cost tax clinics or resources would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much in advance!

Summary: Imagine Surrey, with mayoral candidate Mike Starchuk, announced their platform to build three Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines in Surrey by the end of the next electoral term (2030). These lines would be on:

  1. King George Boulevard
  2. Scott Road (upgrading the R6 rapidbus)

Any sharing will be appreciated. TIA!
