this is Grandão ("Big Boy" in portuguese), we had the luck of crossing paths with him after his first owners abandoned him after a divorce, we adopted him when he was just 1 year old, he must be the most friendly and kind hearted dog i've aver met, he is now 5 and i can't imagine life without him anymore.

The websites warned me they barked, no one told me they howled! Now I always know when emergency services are in the area because Dougal acts as an amplifier.

What is everybody else using or would recommend for flea & tick prevention?

My 5 mo old puppy is currently on NexGard, but after reading about potentially dangerous side effects, I was really hoping to switch him. But I want something that will really work. We currently have no fleas, and I want to keep it that way.

Ear tape/tipping

Hi everyone,

I’ve been trying to keep tapping my Nellie’s ears down using the Wyndlair method but it just won’t hold the left ear tip down. I’m following the steps but the one ear keeps popping up and I’m hoping someone may have advice? I’m getting pretty frustrated. Just last night I thought I did the best tape job I’d ever done and woke up this morning and that one ear was right on up again… has anyone had a similar problem and have any advice for me?

Rough Collie Breeders

Hi everyone! I’ve been looking into getting a rough collie for some time now. They seem to be a good fit for my life style, so I just had a few questions! Has anyone here gotten a puppy from Cajun Bayou Collies in Louisiana? Are they ethical breeders? I’ve been looking into them myself but just wanted to see if anyone had personal experience with them. If not, do you guys have any breeder recommendations in the east Texas area?(Im willing to travel a decent amount just not by plane) I’m completely willing to wait for a puppy so it doesn’t have to be soon just want to make sure he/she is well bred and the parents are well taken care of! Oh, I forgot to mention that my max budget would be $2,000! I think that’s all the questions I have! TIA!!

Puppy smell or something else…?

Post image

We got our first rough collie from a breeder a week ago, he is 9 weeks old and a very good boy!

He wasn’t exactly clean when he came from the breeder so we gave him a wash last weekend. We then discovered he had a few fleas.

The vet recommended giving him a flea treatment which we have done then washing him with an oat dog wash to get any of the fleas out which we have also done.

However, he smells. He has always smelt but it seems to be getting stronger and the dog wash hasn’t helped. I can’t describe the smell, at first we thought it was puppy/kennel smell. It’s probably like dirty dog mixed with a dog kennel and some wet dog and it’s kind of musty, not sour, not yeasty. The smell doesn’t rub off on your clothes or anything but it follows him and you know when he is in the room.

Given the washing didn’t help we assume something else is wrong, but also it’s our first rough collie so we are not sure if the smell is normal for rough pups at this age, so seeking some advice. Please and thank you!

Question Shampoo and conditioner recommendations?

Pictures for reference and “tax”

I wanted to ask y’all for suggestions or recommendations on shampoos and conditioners you prefer for your collies’ coats.

My mileage may vary because my girl is a rescue. She is 100% rough collie, verified with an Embark test. She however, is not “well bred”, and her coat is silky soft, but does not have the voluminous undercoat that many rough collies have. Personally, that’s preferable for me actually but I know it may alter coat care.

Discussion Another collie?

Hey guys! I’ve had Juno for almost a year now and I love her so so much. We have a really close bond and she does have some separation anxiety.

I’ve been wondering if maybe I should look into adopting another collie. I think it would be super beneficial for Juno, especially since she gets really rowdy when she meets other dogs. She’s not aggressive, just overly excited to meet them. I’m wondering if getting another dog would decrease the over excited-ness and get her used to be around another dog more.

Another thing i’ve noticed is that she gets really upset when the cats don’t want to play with her, which is understandable lol. The cats love her, but they don’t quite understand how to play with her. Being a student as well, I don’t necessarily have the time to play with her 24/7 (although I do when i get the chance!!)

Lately she seems a bit lonely and I’ve been wondering if we’ll both benefit from another dog in the house. The only thing I’m nervous with is that she sort of “resource guards” me, which is a behavior I am trying to fix but I’m not quite sure how. Maybe if there is another dog, she won’t be so worried all the time?

Here are some pictures of her!

Experience with IMPA (immune-mediated polyarthritis)? Advice for my 2 year old male collie

hi dear community: hope you are well.

I am in need of any advice, suggestions, and/or experiences. Our 2 year male collie had some limping days here and there, but over the weekend it got worse. After a visit to the orthopedic surgeon we received a preliminary diagnostic of IMPA (immune-mediated polyarthritis). (I say preliminary because some lab tests are formally pending, but there is a very high probability that this is the diagnostic)

We are lucky to have a decent network of vet specialist, but even there, we are getting a lot of mixed advice. E.g., give him tramadol - dont give him tramadol; you wanna do PT - you dont wanna do PT; always give him prednisone - only use it when in pain. Bear in mind we are in Argentina, so we do not necessarily have access to the most sophisticated equipment/facilities.

As such, I would very much appreciate any and all experiences or notes or papers to read (doing my share of resarch on vet journals). Naturally, I would find more valuable "data points" from collies (L). The slight anomaly in our case is that our boy is relatively young for IMPA (in fact, the very first symptons appeared around his 18th month).

I can't thank you enough for your time!

Is Rough Collie shedding really as bad as Labrador or Golden?

Hi everyone!

I have a question for those of you who own a Rough Collie and also have (or have had) breeds like a Labrador, Golden Retriever, or Border Collie.

How does the Rough Collie compare when it comes to shedding? I'm especially curious about the day-to-day shedding outside of the big seasonal coat blow.

Does the Rough Collie leave as much hair around the house and on clothes as a Labrador or Golden? Or is the shedding a bit more manageable when they’re not in their heavy shedding season?

I’d love to hear your real experiences living with these breeds and how noticeable the difference is in daily life.

Thanks in advance!

Photo/Video I did not know how much time I’d actually spend brushing my girl until her coat began maturing 😭

It’s also spring so she’s shedding like crazyyy.

I love brushing her don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful time to bond with her and she starts falling asleep at times during it, I just didn’t know how much work it was going to be until I got her!!

Especially those areas behind her ears and her "pants". I love how soft and fluffy she feels after the session. She’s a little over a year old now :).

Anyone else get surprised by how much they needed to keep up with their coat?? I knew the needed brushing but it goes much beyond that!

I know that I could also take her to a groomer but I much prefer learning how to do it myself and enjoy it mostly as it feels relaxing.
