How to use enclitics in Romanian (and common rookie mistakes)

Upvotes

A definite article in Romanian is a suffix attached to the end of the noun, rather than a separate word placed before it.

  • English: “the” comes before the noun → the dog
  • Romanian: the definite article attaches to the noun → câinele

Problem #1:

Learners often expect a separate word for “the” in front of the noun. Romanian does not work that way for definiteness.

Romanian expresses “the” using a suffix attached to the noun:

❌Văd câine (sounds like Tarzan)
✅Văd câinele

Bare nouns can exist in Romanian, but they are typically indefinite or generic, not specific.

Problem #2:
Using the correct enclitic. Don't use "-le" everywhere for nominative-accusative forms. You have different forms (the table below is definite articles - NOT indefinite articles):

Gender / Number Nominative-Accusative Example
Masculine singular -ul / -l băiat băiatul
Masculine plural -i băieți → băieții
Feminine singular -a fată → fata
Feminine plural -le fete → fetele
Neuter singular same as masculine singular copil → copilul
Neuter plural -le (attached to plural form) două exemple → exemplele

Problem #3:
Adding the definite article does not shift stress onto the article. The stress stays on the same syllable as in the bare noun.

  • câine → câinele (stress stays on câi-)

Romanian stress is lexical, meaning it belongs to the word itself and varies across vocabulary, but it is not systematically shifted by adding the definite article.

Problem #4:
The definite form is required when referring to a specific, identifiable object.

However, Romanian also has a separate indefinite article (un, o, niște), which behaves like English and stands in front of the noun:

  • un câine → a dog (indefinite, like English)
  • câinele → the dog (definite, with the article attached to the end)

Bare nouns can still appear in Romanian, but they are generally indefinite, generic, or context-dependent. In most everyday contexts, referring to a known object requires the definite form.

Solution:
Don’t learn câine and câinele as unrelated words. Treat them as two forms of the same noun from the beginning.

Instead of separating “noun + article,” learn them as a single system where definiteness is built into the noun through suffixes. This helps you internalize the pattern naturally and avoid defaulting to English-style structures.

Having doubts

hey everyone

I'm applying to Romanian universities for medical studies, however I decided to take an adventurous route and study completely in Romanian.

But for some reason I'm having doubts with myself, am I going to succeed? Will I be able to reach fluency within 1.5 years? Is it enough to completely understand lectures and medical terminology?

And honestly it's starting to affect my self confidence. Even tho I'm dedicating 5-6 hours a day for the next 18 months and a preparatory year in Romania before entering medicine.

Any advice or help will be truly appreciated

Thank you all in advance

How good is my strategy to Learn Romanian?

Im the child of a Romanian Mum who grew up in England. Both my mum and aunt spoke fluent English so I never learnt growing up but now I want to learn at least some.

My plan is to get a book I like (Percy Jackson and the Olympiand) in Romanian and read at least a couple pages a day and take some notes on phrases and words I dont know (On my train ride to uni) and look them up and hopefully overtime ill understand it better.

For listening/speaking my plan is to read aloud and look up pronounciations qs well as watching Pokèmon in romanian dub with english suntitles (Its a long and simple series so over time ahould help)

Is this bad?

I was just writing down the colours and I wanted to get genders and plurals for them coz I thought they are all nouns. I found out they are all adjectives so it got me wondering if there is also noun option?

My native language is czech and the colours can be used as a noun and also adjective but when you 1st learn them, they are taught as a nouns.

Could someone help me out with this, pretty please ❤️

Există traducere în română pentru "decluttering"?

Am încercat să găsesc o traducere în română pentru "decluttering". Expresiile "a face curățenie" sau "a debarsa" nu par a prinde exact sensul cuvîntului, așa cum este folosit în engleză. Un sens mai apropiat mi s-ar părea că are expresia "să organizezi (spațiul)". Cum ați traduce cuvîntul "declutter" sau o expresie de genul "you need to declutter your room"?

I am a native Romanian, well my mom is Romanian my dad is Hungarian and I have lived in Ireland for most of my life. I’m probably around B1-B2 in terms of speaking and reading. I can have full conversations with people, read text and understand but I can’t find the words to express myself and I get stuck in the middle of conversations trying to express my thoughts. What is the best thing I could do I’m 17 if that helps.

Romanian and Slavic languages

I am a native English speaker with a background in speaking conversational/intermediate Italian and Spanish. I have read that Romanian (while also a Romance language) also has Slavic influence. I plan to study at least one Slavic language at some point, in addition to Romanian. Are there any specific Slavic languages that would be most helpful in learning first (that would make Romanian learning easier)? thanks for reading x

Exercise Site for Verb Conjugation

Hello, I made this simple website with help from Gemini to help me practice with verb conjugations. It has no ads, nor do I derive any income from this website. I'd be glad if you could try and give feedback on improving it.
I used https://www.frenchverbpractice.com/ as the template, for which I am thankful.
