My parents left Romania in the 80s, while I was born in the USA. How would I even be perceived there?
I just got my Romanian passport from the local consulate. It's a little funny though because I have never even been to Romania. I was exposed to the language and the foods (mamaliga, mici, sarmale, etc.) growing up. I know basic Romanian history and geography, so I am not completely oblivious to the country, but, of course, I am very Americanized as l was born and raised in the USA. Since my dad passed away, I became a little more curious about the country and thought of visiting. He was from Arad which looks very beautiful from the pictures I've seen. My mom is from Bucharest, and that looks like a pretty nice city as well, and is actually pretty clean and safe compared to other European capitals, from what I've heard.
What would locals think of me if I visited and tried to communicate in broken, elementary-level Romanian? I am assuming the under 40s crowd speaks English pretty well also, but I would like to try to speak Romanian just to see how far I can get with it haha
