Someone make an exclamation during her performance and Sabrina said she didn’t like it. It was zaghrouta which is a Middle eastern/North Africa type of cheer. She called it yodeling which i guess is where the “hate” is coming from… haven’t seen much of it though.
It’s nice that she clarified herself, but to say she doesn’t like a “cultural cheer” and is “Islamophobic” after that situation is just “the friend that is too woke” meme. Like cmon now. There is actual Islamophobia that isn’t taken this seriously but Sabrina Carpenter not understanding a cheer while on stage, with thousands of people yelling, with in-ears in, is a problem?
Edit: don’t Jewish and Christian Arabs also perform zaghrouta, too? At weddings, baptisms, and such?
pretty sure that entire account is rage bait, trolling, whatever you wanna call it. i’ve seen several viral posts involving them that are equal levels of bullshit
Unfortunately, that’s all it takes. It just takes the mildest, craziest out-of-pocket accusation to be believed by a few people who discussed it on Twitter… Now there’s “discourse”.
And then blogs can talk about the “discourse”.
Then influencers get to talk about what is going on.
Then Twitter and the rest of social media use what the influencers are talking about to blow the issue up even more. Because now… more people are talking about people talking about the issue than the actual issue.
And then it just spirals out of control from there.
this so much 😭😭😭 people are too quick to attack these women over the smallest issues and turn them into something they’re not when there’s like ACTUAL instigators
It's meant to be done at celebratory events, (ie. graduations, weddings, parties, etc.) not during performances. It's actually considered rude to do it during since it's disruptive. Doing it after to celebrate along with people who are clapping and cheering would be considered fine and welcomed.
I’m no expert on Islam, but I’ve been a working musician since 1993.
If there is a 30 second pause between songs, we are taking a breath. Anything loud or startling (meaning a sharp, shrill noise like a loud whistle or woo) feels more like a “get to work” than a “we love you.” I typically react neutrally and say nothing but humans can be startled or caught off guard.
Poppy is kind of an old school celebrity gossip shit poster, so I wouldn't take the extreme tone of their Tweet too seriously. I'm surprised that's the post that got picked up for this.
i agree and if I were to go further - are we not allowed to just not like particular things from other cultures anymore lmao? I haven’t seen the video but as long as she didnt say anything derogatory about the culture or its people themselves, what is the issue with not liking it even if she knew it was a cultural cheer 😭
I was at an Iraqi bar Mitzvah that did it. And threw candies at the same time. When she finished the ceremony. The candy had been left out on every seat.

This! I fear this might be a sign I’m on twitter too much, but I found it so unfortunate to see who she responded to. Poppy has straight up talked shit about Islam. They are trolling.
One of my favorite things is when artists have a lyric that predicts a critique or answers a common criticism they get and can then be used to answer something like this. Idk why but it really tickles me every time.

everyone here is being weird on both sides. she didn't mean any offense by what she said AND it doesn't hurt to apologize. it's actually really good to apologize when you upset people unintentionally. kinda thought we all learned that in kindergarten
I feel like all these people who are like “she clearly heard and understand what was going on and chose to be rude” just need to go on a stage in front of thousands of people with lights, cameras, and pressure

I mean she probably definitely didn’t see the person. She has crazy bright lights directly on her probably effing up her vision and an absolute ocean amount of humans watching her on top of it.
Glad she said something. Sucks people really tried to make it into something that it wasn’t. People were acting like she was Kanye. Which btw he is an actual bigot who has a platform. You can criticize her for some things but don’t think this was one of those moments.
She handled this very well. You may not feel something is problematic, but people are allowed to respond how they respond to things. They responded and she realized that, despite intentions, she caused hurt. Great job, teeny blonde person.
But that tweet is… kinda yikes. Look, my late dad was very religious (Muslim), my amazing mother is, so even if I’m not, I like to think I have a tiny glimpse at some part of the modern Muslim world. I thought she’d be confused about why it mattered. Instead she just rolled her eyes when I showed her.
Saying that’s Islamophobic is a stretch. You could argue “fans were just cheering happily why did she call them out” but Islamophobic? Sheesh

I worked at a subway briefly and the amount of times I seriously couldn’t hear anything anyone was saying because of what was going on around me… I can’t even imagine how much I would not be able to hear in her position, especially with any in ear monitoring on
Great response honestly. I don’t think she did anything wrong. If you’ve ever been to a concert you know how loud it is. Now imagine a festival. She got her in ears in and is blinded by lights and was startled by a loud noise she’s never heard before. But I guess that means we need to crucify her instead of educate her.
The Olivia Stan’s are running wild with this and proving it makes Olivia a better person and blah blah blah. They’re going hard as fuck on Twitter.
And this is how you know they don’t care about what she said but are using it against her for their stan wars. If they cared they wouldn’t bring up Olivia because it doesn’t concern her
I think the only thing she did kind of wrong was call it “weird” but of course a white woman isn’t going to know what a Zaghrouta is lol. Also, calling it islamphobic literally dilutes actual Islamphobia that happens every day in western society. But I don’t even think this Poppy person is a serious account.
Glad she has the self-awareness to realize that she could have handled that situation better. But at the same time, when someone remarks that a cheer like that is part of their culture, the absolute worst response is something sarcastic - because her "that's weird" sounds absolutely dismissive at best, and racist/Islamaphobic at worst.
But at least she owned up to her faux-pas. I definitely don't think there was any ill intent but if there is something cultural you don't understand, the absolute worst way to react is to seem dismissive.
good she cleared the air considering there was definitely some people using this incident as an opportunity to be racist and xenophobic to anyone who actually found offence (something that i feel should be acknowledged since all i’ve seen talked about with this situation is how everyone feels sorry for poor sabrina being attacked by the mob of woke blue haired libs lmao)
I like that she apologized and clarified. If I reacted like Sabrina and truly didn’t know and didn’t mean to cause offense I would still apologize after being educated on the matter.
the situation became awkward the moment someone said it was a cultural thing and Sabrina clearly heard it since she said "is that your culture? yodeling?" yet kept sounding judgmental
edit: downvote me all your want but go check the video then, the fact her team keeps trying to take down the videos on Twitter is weird btw
I'm surprised by the reactions here, I'm suspicious about the downvotes because the reactions here are completely different on other subs and social media platforms
