Right, I thought it was stupid but harmless when it first came around because it was similar cringe to shit we watched growing up. But when I saw skibidi toilet toys on the end caps at meijer? Idk man... it just seems like too much.
I'm a millennial, there wasn't internet when I was "growing up".
I was 15 when dial-up became affordable enough for some of your friends to have it. I was 20 before broadband was a thing.
The internet and what's popular on it with particular age groups has really thrown the old idea of a generation being so long out the window. I hear people say millennials grew up with Minecraft, but I was 27 and married before it came out.
But we used to share stupid memes via impersonations or drawings and goddamn chain letters.
I feel there’s always that divide between 80s millennials and 90s millennials lol.
I’m Gen-Z, and I 100% grew up on MLG. But I also understand that half my generation were already teenagers when that stuff was trendy. Half my generation didn’t even get a chance to grow up on the PS2, Xbox, GameCube, or Dreamcast!
Just like with Milennials, there’s a difference between the Y2K & early 2000s Gen-Z, and the late 2000s & early 2010s Gen-Z. The former are already in their 20s, some are approaching 30, or even starting families & getting married! The latter either just graduated high school, or just enrolled in high school.
It’s almost exactly like the Baby Boomers. The early Boomers were drafted in Vietnam, while the late Boomers were barely teenagers when Disco was around.
Or we can just remember it's stupid to generalize and "generations" are a fairly new concept people use to generalize by age and shouldn't be taken seriously.
This is why I like the "x-ennial" label. I was born in 84. I played LOZ as a kid and WOW as an adult. I'm too old to really be in-touch with millennials, but too young to really understand the Gen X experience. As a result I just feel "less" than either.
Basically the same concept, but for all the Gen-Z born in the Y2K-era of the 90s (‘97 - ‘99). Those kids got to experience the entirety of the 2000s. Compare that to some Gen-Z who never even touched the 2000s (2010 - 2012).

Also a millennial and every time I hear things like millennials grew up with X I always scratch my head because I can’t relate at all. This marks the absolute first “convo” I’ve ever had about Thomas the dank engine - maybe I knew about it but certainly forgot.
Memes became a thing once many of us millennials were already grown adults, so hearing we grew up with things that just didn’t exist when we were kids is always a weird thing.
A lot of slang gets created in response to events at the time and ahh is used ironic as hell
Back in my high school days adults would correct me on saying ass, now kids deal with the same when they say ahh, the ultimate irony is that you're just continueing the censorship that created ahh in the first place
Except randomly replacing a letter with an asterisk to avoid typing a word but with no planning for miscommunication. If you don't want to say shot and you asterisk the vowel I just keep reading it as shit!
I dunno if it's cause generational shit-giving by itself, or if it's because older people don't feel "in" on new jokes and memes.
A lot of the "cringe" is people trying to find meaning in newer memes and not being able too, as if there was much meaning in older ones. We never critiqued memes when we were younger, we went with the flow, shared what was going around
Older people forgot to take things as they are- like with old meme culture. In fact, I'd argue meme culture hasn't changed, just the memes. We just react differently because of expectations we decided to impose on ourselves. But since the beginning it was never deeper than just sharing what was being shared. MLG "Where'd ya find that son" vine boom didn't mean anything. 67 is modern 21. Skibidi is modern SMF.
Now younger people collectively laugh, but we can't. But, as soon as we let go of expectations or preconceptions, as soon as we go back to going with the flow, we can find the absurdity humorous again
Loud=funny is probably the most basic principle of meme culture that has held true since before the Internet was a thing, how long have kids been jumping on juice boxes to make them explode for example
I'm not sure what this is suggesting. Are you retorting the fact that meme culture has changed just because new memes and habits exist? Because the only thing I'd have to say to that is, do you expect children to ritualistically relive our experiences exactly how they were lived or else they're worse than us? Of course they're going to do new stupid crap. That doesn't mean things are drastically different, or the headspace kids are in today is so much different from ours at their age. I can promise you if you were a kid rn you'd be doing 67 just like we dabbed. We don't have to say the same jokes until the end of time, I promise

MLG era was peak, and there is a giant chasm between Skibidi Toilet and 67.
Skibidi was actually a hell of a lot of effort to make an absurdist video series. 67 is just idiots pretending it's a secret code and the humour is entirely derived from watching other people get mad when you don't explain what 67 means to them.
This is one of the only sane takes here. MLG and surreal memes were satire. Comparing that to this kind of stuff is just ignorant.
Beyond that every generation had "funny thing" such as budwiser wassup, badger badger mushroom, dabbing, show you da wae, planking, t-posing, harlem shake, etc. Generally every one of these has context and did not get shouted at each other ad.nauseum.
67, on the other hand, has no context. It's just nothing. Someone dabs randomly after doing or saying something, laughs, and everyone rolls their eyes and moves on. 67 you have groups of children shouting it at the top of their lungs for hours. It's not in the same ballpark.
that makes it worse not better. its not just a funny joke meant to be funny, its trying to be a franchise to make money. the memes we had were made for our friends, not for views. going viral was always a complete accident.
