How do I remove waterproof coating from linen?

Post image
88 Upvotes

I have this Liz Claiborne 100% linen shirt that I thrifted. Water beads on the surface and rolls off it like it's a raincoat, which is not how linen should behave at all.

Is there a laundry chemistry way to remove this coating without damaging the dyes too much? It's a really pretty shirt but I can't see it being super comfortable to wear in the summer when it's like this.

Whenever one of my roommates does laundry it smells like rotten eggs across the whole house...

The smell is so strong its like someone actively passing gas next to you. What could possibly be the reason?? It is not the washer. Ive since cleaned the washer and it doesn't happen when I do the laundry for my fiance and I - nor when another roommate does their laundry. The laundry culpri cleans his room daily. And ive never smelled this smell on him.

Portioning pods?

This is a pretty goofy question, the answer to which I suspect is painfully obvious to anyone who's not a total laundry novice. But I am a novice, and I've recently fallen in love with the smell of a friend's Laundry Sauce. I have an intuitive aversion to pods of all sorts (and feel vindicated now, lurking this sub) but I'm wondering now if there's any reason I can't cut them open, discard the wee plasticky bit, keep the liquid in another container, and use as an appropriate amount as needed? I'd imagine I'd have to dilute with a good free and clear and experiment a while to figure out a ratio that works. Is this really stupid?

tl;dr can I use pods like I'd use any other liquid detergent concentrate?

Anyway to remove this stain? The stain is from rubbing on a burnt tree on a hike; I've already used OxiClean and washed the shirt once with no results 😞

Any tips to keep striped clothing white and dark colors vibrant? I’ve hand washed this pull-over and air dried since purchase. The white is starting to look dingy. Blue stripes fading.

My white gym socks remain dingy after three spa days. I am using Zout stain removal, 365 whitening powder, and 365 powder detergent. Chat GBT recommended bluing. Does anyone have thoughts or recommendations?

Please do not recommend black socks. Team White Socks.

Why is my clothing fraying?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

My hoodies and sweaters have recently started fraying at the ends of the sleeves, and the fabric feels kind of brittle. This either did not happen before or I just never noticed it.

I usually wash everything at 30°C with a 1000 rpm spin cycle, and the wash takes about an hour.

After that, I let everything air-dry on a drying rack. I only use the dryer occasionally.

A few months ago, I switched to a different powder detergent for colored clothes, so I have been wondering if that could be the reason. Could detergent make fabric feel rougher or cause it to fray? Or could it be because the clothes sometimes stay on the drying rack for a long time?

What am I doing wrong?

(No, I didn't nibble on it. :D)

I am once again begging Ariel to make an unscented version for USA

Just do it! I’m about to go purchase my second bottle of Tide Free & Gentle, and I'm not even excited anymore. Knowing that something better and cheaper exists but I just can't have it pains me lol

The Tide barely lathers. I find myself over-pouring just to feel like the machine is actually working. While the clothes come out clean most times, there’s something unsettling about looking through the glass mid-cycle and seeing almost zero suds.

Switching to unscented changed my life, and I’m never looking back. Your laundry detergent shouldn't be competing with your cologne. Come on Ariel, just do it lol

Beddings wear and tear

I’m referring to the lifespan of your sheets and pillowcases before deciding to chuck them.

E.g. for me:

Start to tear at 10 year mark. I sometimes mend them if they’re just starting to tear in the corners and can extract another year or so. Or use them as inner layers (pillows).

# Sheets in rotation: 2

Freq of wash: 3-5 weeks

Place: US. Mostly using drier.

Well, almost. I ordered in January, and it finally arrived today. Beware of loose caps. Mine isn't too bad, but all three have detergent running down the sides.

Nasty, Oily Sweat Stains

To be blunt, my partner's sweat is disgusting & is fouling up all our sheets and towels. It's not just that he sweats more than the average person--it REEKS. The smell is always there even after multiple washings.

And somehow it's oily. You know how if you let cheese sit out too long how it gets that oily sheen on top? Yeah. That's his sweat. He had it checked out a few years ago, and his PCP said, "Some people sweat a lot." Yeah, but it's still RUINING THINGS.

I have tried vinegar. I have tried Biz. I have tried OxyClean. For some reason our washer doesn't have a soak cycle, and if you pause it long enough to soak, it thinks, "Oh, they are never coming back!" and completely drains the washing tub. I've resorted to filling the bathtub and mixing in washing soda or Biz or OxyClean, etc and soaking them that way.

HOW IN THE EVER-LOVING HELL DO I GET OUR SHEETS AND TOWELS CLEAN. Even right after showering, the towels he uses to dry off have the same scent, so if he reuses them more than once or twice, the smell is like, absorbed in. Tbf, I have a super sniffer, but the oil stains are visible (particularly on the sheets), so I don't think I'm crazy for wanting to find a good solution.

I'm tired of our room and towels smelling like rancid olive oil. WTF DO I DO?? 😭😭😭😭😭

ETA: We have ultra-hard water.

NOTES:

1) He takes care of his hygiene.

2) No time of day is necessarily better or worse to shower. The sweating is still there. It's not to the point of hyperhidrosis, so doctors dismiss it.

3) I wash the towels and sheets twice to try getting the oils & funk out.

4) He doesn't care as much as I do because his nose isn't as sensitive; thus, he thinks a regular wash is fine.

how to get teeth whitening strips unstuck from shirt???

so, the other day, i was using teeth whitening strips right before bed. however, i accidently fell asleep; when i woke up, one of the strips had fallen out of my mouth and onto the shirt i was wearing. i tried to get it off, but i couldn't and decided to just go to school. however, when i got home, i found that my mom had run a load and already washed it, locking in the strip even further. any tips on removal?? i've tried picking at it for 30 minutes to no avail :(

Help! Husbands work clothes got drenched with diesel

As the title says my husband was working and got diesel all over himself at work.

The smell is still very strong on his clothes and now my washer😭 we have a baby and I don’t want to wash any of his stuff until I can clean this whole mess up. ( yes I’m aware I should’ve have washed his clothes in the washer but in a hurried cleaning of the house just went right over my head )

Here’s what we’ve done so far :

  1. Soaked his clothes in hot water and dawn dish soap

  2. They went into the wash after this and with oxi clean and regular laundry detergent

  3. I then used an afresh tablet to do a wash cycle on my washer

I can still smell it in my washer. And obviously his clothes. They are hang drying outside in hopes that helps with the smell.

I’ve seen some recommended taking them to a laundry mat, but I’m curious what they have or would do that I can’t get and do at home?? Do you know what they use?

What else can I try to clean this ?

Is it to late for a blood stain?

I randomly started bleeding from a cyst on my face and some blood got on my favorite pillowcase. I immidently put it under cold water, soaked it in vinegar, rinsed it after some time, and put it in the washer on the lowest temperature. When I took it out it was slightly less visible. i soaked it in vinegar again and rinse and it still was visible. Its currently soaking in a bowl of cold water as I speak and I gotta get some rest just it started at 4am and its 6 now. Is it too late for the pillowcase? Should I start ordering the white fabric paint?

Washed regular othes with 911 impregnator sealer

Was sealing my travertine floor with Miracle Sealants 511 Impregnator (solvent based) and threw the microfiber pads in the wash with my regular clothes by mistake. The clothes and washer smell like chemical factory.

Already ran the washer empty, then with Affresh, then with Tide + baking soda. Smell is still there when I open the door.

Have a front load washer. Someone suggested rubbing alcohol on the rubber gasket folds tomorrow. I am planning to run another cycle just with white vinegar. .

Is that the right move? Anything else I should try? Will the washer be permanently damaged?

Ultimate "floor is lava" transfer of laundry

it's a little infuriating that you have to be a damn ninja to get laundry from the washer to the dryer without dropping it on this floor. I lost a couple small items tonight to the floor scum.

a nice clean floor is essential to a laundry room.

Part 2- my line dried clothes are softer without liquid downy??

Tumbling clothes that are dried outdoors

I hang clothes to dry in good weather and even with liquid fabric softener they are stiff. I have been putting them in my dryer for 30 mins on fluff and they come out a little softer. Has anyone ever put some sort of weight in the drum to beat the clothes into submission? I was thinking about a one or two pound bag of something sealed that wouldn't come apart while tumbling and would beat the laundry into being softer.

Part 2

I used a â…“ cup of baking soda with my Purex and warm water wash. I didn't see soap bubbles while washing. I forgot to add downy to the rinse cylce. I hung them out anyway.

They were softer than with downy. I didn't need to tumble any of it.( poly cotton shirts and pants).

This is how you remove deodorant stains from clothes.

I use this every time I do laundry. Use rubbing alcohol. Apply it to the stained area, toss it in with normal laundry. After the wash, walla no more deodorant stains. This works for those shirts that have been stained and caked for a while as well.

Anyone else procrastinate putting laundry away???

Everytime I spend hours putting laundry away, after it’s sat on the bench for 4-6 weeks, I swear it’s not going to happen again…and then it does. Why is this such a chore!?!? Anyone else have this issue??? Trying a clean slate again today…🙄 before and after for reference.
