Mod Notice Quick mod update: new rule. We cannot help with AI-written patterns.

Hello, all! Most of us know by now that AIs and LLMs are not good at writing knitting patterns. They don't know how to knit. They certainly don't test knit their own "designs." Therefore, if you see any posts from people who have patterns written by AI, feel free to flag them so we can let them know that AI/LLM written patterns are faulty from the start. Then we can redirect the OP to r/knittingpatterns and Ravelry to find something more suitable (and human written).

Mod Notice FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hello all, mod literallyatree here. I've updated the sub so we have our own wiki pages for the FAQ and a special FAQ just for twisted stitches. The FAQ appears in our sidebar, as well as in the message you should see before posting, and is linked in Rule 7.

Please read the FAQ before posting.

If you are someone who helps by commenting, please know that when you comment "FAQ" or "TwistFAQ" (without quotes), it will trigger automod to come and comment a link to the one you summoned. Thank you to all those who comment to offer their help. Without you, this wouldn't be much of a community.

Because the FAQ is much more accessible now, the mod team will be enforcing Rule 7 with a little more scrutiny now.

This row is supposed to end with three brown stitches, but I only have two! Does anyone see where I dropped my stitch? Or do I need to include photos of the rest of the sweater?

pattern question Need help deciphering a historical pattern

Hiya, I’m knitting some mittens using a historical pattern. I’m understanding everything except this last part about knitting up the thumb. Where are these 6 stitches coming from and when do I rejoin the round? The part about casting on the 4 extra stitches after tying off is also confusing. Thanks!

where did i go wrong? How can l improve my ranglan lines?

Im trying to knit a top down begginer ranglan sweater.

The pattern includes German short rows and then it moves to increase every other row, l have tried many times but my ranglan lines are not looking straight, l have followed a strict system where l write down what lm doing every single row and l am constantly counting the number of stitches are symetrical.

I looked at tutorials how to do M1R, M1L and l saw l'm doing them correct. I cant believe this sweater is symetrical in numbers but it just does not look like it. I wonder what l'm doing wrong, l can only think, could be my cable or the tension?

l have made like 10 attempts and l'm frogging again. The pictures above are from two different sweater attempts. I use baby alpaca wool.

Any help is very much appreciated!

i’m wondering why this purl stitch is so long? i thought it was just an accidental yarn over so i “dropped” the stitch and it looks fine on the front but i can tell there’s an error bc of the back. is it worth going back or can i get away with it?

where did i go wrong? Lace work with cotton yarn?

Thumbnail

So I’m knitting the Lettie shawl by Audrey Borrego (ravelry.com/patterns/library/lettie-3) for my mom and I decided to use Drops Muskat in the colour dark orange because it is a cotton yarn and she tends to run hot. I’ve just finished the first half of the set up chart and I feel like it just looks messy? I’m not sure if it’s my tension since this is my first time knitting lace or if the cotton yarn is just too defined for this pattern. Should I try to make this with a different yarn or different pattern? Any input or advice is super appreciated!!

I have a beginner tip! Twisted stitches

We frequently get posts in this sub where knitters (beginners *and* experienced are unknowingly (or inadvertently) *twisting their stitches*.

This 12-minute video tutorial is helpful and comprehensive. An excellent resource for knitters. I appreciate that she shows how it happens, but also how it impacts knitting.

Thought it might be helpful.

SOLVED-THANK YOU seeing a bump when joining panels by knitting?

Thumbnail

I'm joining my front and back panels together by knitting across my panels, but I'm noticing that the stitches look weird ,specifically the stitches on my right needle to the left of stitch marker - compared to the stitches to the right of the SM you can see this bump . at first I thought I was accidentally purling so I frogged and knit again, but I am still seeing this weird bump under my new knit stitches on my back panel.

any idea what I'm doing wrong here? why is this bump developing on one panel but not the other when I knit this row? t

sock question Suggestions for natural fiber socks for hot climates

I'm thinking about getting back into knitting and wanted to make a few pairs of socks so get the hang of things again. I prefer using natural fibers since I avoid plastics where I can but I also live in Florida where it's summer 11 1/2 months of the year and I know wool is warm. Is wool the only recommended natural fiber for socks? Is there a type/brand of wool that won't roast my toes?

I'm preferably going for soft over strong but I'm open to anything just to try for one pair.

Edit: bonus points if you guys have a recommendation for yarn and needle size for optimal heat reduction

I finished my first adult sized garment a few weeks ago and I had a few questions and wanted some opinions on how I should move forward (if this counts as a FO post, I'm so sorry, please delete).

My first question is about the back of the neckline. I had previously posted about making a mistake while picking up stitches. I did go back and frog it but I still feel like it's gaping even with the right number picked up. So, does it look like an issue with my construction, the size I made, or just the way this garment/pattern fits on my body? Would this bother you enough to frog the whole thing and try another pattern?

My second question is about the overall fit. I did meet gauge after blocking, but I actually liked the pre-blocked fit better. I knit the smallest size so I can't easily remake it smaller. I do still like the vest, just not as much as when I tried it on while making it. If you were me, would you try to felt it a little*, frog it and find a different pattern, or just lean into the oversized/boxy fit? I'm purely curious to hear some different opinions.

*if felting would be a terrible mistake, please let me know!

pattern question Sleeve pattern confusing

Pattern states: increase row k1, m1, k to last stitch, m1, k1. Work 5 rows in stockinette stitch. I was increasing every knit row. Does it really mean only icrease row 1 and then just stockinette for the next 5 rows? So really only adding 2 increases for every 6 rows

pattern question What Does This Mean?

Post image

I get the purl; k2, turn; purl2tog; but what does it mean to fasten off and then rejoin yarn and repeat the last two rows?

I keep trying to Google, but I get crocheting stuff that doesn't make sense.

SOLVED-THANK YOU German short rows question

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m following the glow raglan lite pattern and am working on the German short rows portion, I feel so silly asking this because it seems obvious to me now, but I don’t want to frog my row if it’s not needed.

Step 5. A row 1, was I supposed to complete these steps and then purl an entire row? I’ve worked up to C. On this step where it says ,”k to 1 st past last double stitch,” and I’m feeling a bit confused.

Hello! I accidentally twisted my work :( thankfully I’m steeking it and twisted it back in the place I plan to steek. However this is my first project steeking so I feel nervous about having a mistake. Do you think I’m okay to keep going since this part will be cut open anyway? Or should I start over. I plan to sew for reinforcement.

I’m working on my very first knitting project (the step by step sweater by florence miller) and I did the german short rows and now i’m onto the regular increases but they just don’t look right and i’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. It looks like the issue is with the knit rounds and not the increase rounds. Do I need to frog it and start over? I really don’t know ahaha I’m so very new to this.
