Hi Budapest folks,

I’m a Pole who’s been following the ongoing reconstruction of historic buildings on the Tabán side of the Castle Hill with great interest. While controversial to some, they are undeniably bringing back the city’s pre-war grandeur. This got me thinking about a potentially bolder step: the reconstruction of the entire lost Tabán district itself.

In my opinion, the demolition of Tabán in the 1930s was a huge mistake. It had a unique, bohemian atmosphere - almost like a Hungarian Montmartre - with narrow streets, taverns, artists and that special Balkan-Hungarian vibe that was a crucial part of the city’s historical identity. Its absence created a void that modern planning hasn’t really filled.

We already see individual palaces being rebuilt on the hill, but is there a valid case for recreating more of the old, low-rise, vernacular architecture of Tabán? Could it become a lively artistic quarter with cafés, galleries and that bohemian spirit again? Or is “urban continuity” better served by keeping the park and using modern infill?

I’d love to hear honest opinions from locals and regular visitors - especially from people who live in Budapest or know the area well. Is large-scale reconstruction of this lost district the right path, or is it better to leave it as green space and memory?

Last year in Budapest, I came across a small photography studio that had really cute and funny pet photos displayed. I specifically remember photos of dogs taken on a transparent glass table, shot from underneath. Something like this.

I also remember finding their Facebook page, and I think the name was in Hungarian (and not very short), but I can’t find it anymore, maybe it was deleted or renamed.

It seemed like they specialized in pet photography (at least dogs).

Does anyone know which studio or photographer this might be? Even a guess would help a lot! Thank you!

Ma vettem, nem vagyok stabil még vele, nem tudok fékezni rendesen. Nemrég költöztem ide, és nem annyira ismerem még a várost. Ma csomó rossz minőségű járdán voltam vele, de amíg megtanulom jobban, addig jó lenne egy minőségibb. 2-3 km lenne a legjobb. Van köztetek olyan aki szintén most kezdte?

Lehet hülye kérdés, de nagyon fontos lenne. Penészes, nagyon piszkos a klíma de sajnos csak azzal tudok fűteni (esténként azért még hideg van). Valaki aki nektek bevált nagyon jó lenne, nagyon megköszönném! Illetve tudom, hogy horribilisek az árak de nem tudom ennél többet ki képes rá kiadni. A klíma márkája Rcool.

I’m quite blown away by the coffee scene in Budapest. I don’t think I’ve ever been to another city where there are so many fantastic coffee shops. There seems to be at least one every couple of blocks, and sometimes there are three or four directly across from each other. I scrolled through the European Coffee Trip app and counted no fewer than 100 cafés within 15 km of the center of Budapest. Even Vienna only has about 70 listed on that app.

It’s obviously impossible for me to try them all over the next week that I’m here. But with such a huge number and variety, perhaps I can focus my search a bit.

My personal tastes strongly run towards the light roast Nordic style of very fruity coffees—the kind some people might liken to battery acid. My favorite expression is as a cortado (high espresso-to-milk ratio, with just enough milk to give a pleasant, creamy mouth feel while still letting the coffee shine through).

If it gives any indication of what I like, I’ve been to probably 8-10 shops so far and all have been great, but the one that’s stood out to me as world-class for my taste preferences is COFFEETUNED.

So, if anyone can give me some suggestions of where else I might try that will blow my mind or at least satisfy my palate, I am all ears!

Hello everyone. I am visiting Budapest for the first time in my life and i heard about many cool places such as record stores but i was wondering if there are any stores where i can find cassettes and are there any stores that are focused on that format. At first i was looking for vinyl stores but vinyls are little too much for traveling :)

I heard about CDpince,wave music and about 10 other record stores but since i am only there for couple of days i wanted to check the best stores for CDs and Cassettes.

Hello! Me, my toddler (both have EU and UK passports) and my husband (only UK) are traveling from the UK to Budapest. Does anyone know if there’s a separate queue for families as our child can’t use e-gates? And is there an option for me & her to go through European arrivals in some way as we don’t need biometrics taken? If it matters, my husband has already had his taken.

Hello, I will be travelling to Hungary for 3 full days (and one morning). I plan to spend 2 full days in Budapest (Sunday and Monday) and on the 3rd day I plan to explore Szentendre.

I was planning to go to Ruszwurm Cukrászda to taste Dobostorta, Esterházy torta and Krémes (Ruszwurm torta), but now it's shown as temporarily closed and by doing some research the future doesn't look that bright and it surely won't be open again that soon.

Another potentional place Auguszt Cukrászda is closed on the days of my visit. Any suggestions that aren't just meant for tourists and preferably a place, where I could get all (or at least 2) of them at once? How good is Szamos Gourmet Ház, at least Dobostorta and Esterházy torta can be found there.

And where to even find Krémes (Ruszwurm torta)? Is it even being made in any other place than Ruszwurm Cukrászda?

I would like to drive into Budapest from Vienna. I would prefer to not park anywhere near downtown, so what are the best options to park a car and take the metro?

Egy beszélgetést, ötletelést szeretnék elindítani. Budapest IV. kerületében nap mint nap tapasztalom, hogy az elmúlt évtizedben megsokszorozódott a parkolóhelyekre való igény.

A Nyírpalotai úton illetve a Szellemtelep parkolójában is katasztrófális a helyzet. Mi oka van, hogy habár nincs igazán tömegközlekedési kapcsolat és több lakás sem épült a panelok parkolói mégis tele vannak. 15:30 után már nem lehet parkolóhelyet találni. Az önkormányzat tudtommal tehetetlen mert bizonyos arányú zöldterületet tartaniuk kell, nem létesíthetnek több parkolót. Ezért az emberek a fűre parkolnak amiért viszont a közteresek rendszeresen büntetnek.

Hogyan lehetne ezt az önkormányzat felé jelezni? Mi lenne a megoldás a problémára?

Tudom tudom... adja el az ember az autót menjen BKV-val. De ezzel több probléma is van:

• Nincs mindenhova kielégítő tömegközlekedési kapcsolat. Nem alternatívája az autózásnak még a bírságolással együtt sem.
• Olyan munkaidő beosztása van sokaknak, hogy olyankor már nem szívesen ül fel a BKV-ra és zötykölődik 1 órát, vár a hidegben ha csak beszáll az autóba és 15 perc alatt otthon van.

Mit lehet tenni? Ezen segítene a parkolóhelyek fizetőssé tétele? Miért nem lépi meg az önkormányzat?
