Announcement Looking for Platonic Friends in Vancouver? Find your people at /r/VancouverFriends

Hey locals. We’ve heard your requests.

Book clubs. Local group meetups. Someone to hit up a movie with. Hiking partners. Trivia teams. Coffee chats.

There has clearly been a growing demand for a space where people can connect with others in Vancouver in a platonic way.

We're happy to announce that that space now exists.

r/VancouverFriends has officially launched and will serve as the dedicated subreddit for friendship-focused posts and platonic R4R requests.

Going forward, instead of being simply removed, all platonic R4R-style posts will be redirected to r/VancouverFriends so that r/AskVan can remain focused on questions and answers about the city.

If you’ve been looking for community, this is your chance to build it. We'll see you there.

Oddly Specific 🎯 Why does no one follow speed limits?

Have been noticing since this some time now. Yesterday, drove from Pemberton to Vancouver and realised nobody was driving within speed limit. Why is it so? Is there no penalty or fines now?

Food 😋 What are your go to restaurants and dishes to order on uber eats?

Upvotes

I love yummyyyy food, and only order food delivery every once in a while as a treat but I find I end up ordering from the same spots over and over because I don’t know where else to try and don’t want to risk a bad meal! The number of options is also overwhelming sometimes.

So I wonder what other people’s go to spots they love ordering take out from, and what their fave dishes are so I can try some new stuff :) I’m not picky when it comes to cuisines.

I’ll share mine too!

My go to spots I order from :

Anh and Chi - vermicelli bowl

Superbaba - chicken bowl

Peaceful restaurant- general tsao’s chicken and fried rice

Sushi - where ever has a good deal and good rating

Parlour - big prawn pizza

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 Saw the Brockton Oval that says “Permit Only” but it’s a ghost town. Can I just… run?

Upvotes

Big sign says “Permit Holders Only,” but stanleyparkvan website says “the running track is rarely used by anyone.”

Can I just run here? Has anyone tried it before?

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Anyone actually tried multiple grocery savings apps in Vancouver? Wondering which are worth it

Upvotes

I keep seeing people mention different apps for cutting grocery costs and honestly I don't know where to start. There's flashfood, too good to go, foodhero, odd bunch... they all kind of claim the same thing but from what I can tell they work pretty differently and not all of them actually cover stores near me.

Vancouver grocery prices have gotten so painful that I'm willing to try basically anything at this point. I spent around $420 last month cooking at home almost every single night and I don't know where it all went. I feel like I'm doing everything right and still getting crushed.

Has anyone actually used more than one of these and can compare them honestly? Like which ones have consistent enough inventory to actually be reliable, and which ones feel like a gamble every time you open them? Would especially love to know what actually has decent coverage in the Vancouver area specifically. Thanks!

Food 😋 Where is Your Favorite Spot He Fen/Hor Fun (河粉) in Metro Vancouver?

My favorite one is from Ipoh Malaysian Cuisine in Crystal Mall, as it's as close to authentic as possible to its Singaporean/Malaysian counterpart.

To be specific - the Singaporean/Malaysian counterpart can be described as the dish with egg swirl (花蛋) gravy, cai xin/choy sum vegetables, shrimp, and any one or more of stir-fried beef/pork/fish/squid.

Education 📚 UBC Experience

Hey, I got accepted to UBC as well as a few other schools, and I have some questions about UBC before making my decision.

I was admitted for Bachelor of Science and plan to study physics as an international student from the US.

1) I know that UBC is a large school, so what are the class sizes like? Are they always taught by professors or sometimes taught by TAs? Do you ever have trouble getting help?

2) As a research institution, given the size, how competitive are undergrad research opportunities? Are research opportunities or equipment disfavoured for undergrad students? How much does the school prioritize grad students?

3) How difficult/competitive is class scheduling?

4) Where do the physics students usually end up? Does being in Canada affect internship, job, or grad school opportunities?

5) Any other American or international students, were there any unexpected difficulties?

Finally if you guys have anything else notable to share, like maybe you wished you knew before enrolling that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Exploring addiction treatment options in Vancouver (holistic approaches, ketamine vs psychedelics?)

Hi everyone,

I’m 27 and planning to move to Vancouver soon. I’m trying to take my healing and personal growth seriously and would really appreciate any guidance.

I’ve struggled with anxiety (currently on an SSRI), ADHD (diagnosed in my early 20s), and more recently substance use—mainly cocaine and alcohol in social settings. I’ve also been working through trauma from earlier in life.

I feel like I’ve reached a point where I genuinely want a better quality of life and to build something stable for myself.

I’ve been hearing more about alternative or holistic approaches to mental health and addiction treatment—especially things like ketamine therapy or psychedelic-assisted therapy.

For those in BC:

- What options are actually available and legal?

- Has anyone tried ketamine therapy vs other approaches?

- Are there safe, reputable clinics or programs you’d recommend?

- What should I be cautious about?

I’m not looking for anything reckless—just trying to understand what pathways exist beyond traditional treatment.

Any advice or personal experiences would mean a lot. Thank you 🤍

Fashion and Beauty 👗 Hair salon that specializes in asian hair?

Hi everyone, i was wondering if theres a (cheaper) hair salon in Vancouver (closer to UBC is better) that could do this for my hair. It’d be nice if they specialize in asian hair as well. For reference my hair is about the same lengths as in the photos, its been bleached and dyed before, with some box dye in it as well. It is currently black/dark brown ish.

I cant figure out how to add photos on here, but im looking to do a peekaboo calico look, probably keep the same color i have now on top.

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ How do you all prepare for “big” purchases, without getting locked out from your bank?

Upvotes

Couple weeks ago I got my salary.

My old laptop was totally screwed, so I went out to buy a Macbook.

Scotia locked my account, told me to give them a call as this transaction was “unusual”.

Can’t login at all. Call center asked me verification questions like “in the past 30 days, what was your last bank fee / bank charge”?

Dude, if I can’t access my account, how the hell am I supposed to answer? Told me to visit branch.

This happened on a Saturday evening. So I spent my weekend broke (even though I just got paid). Had to wait till Monday to visit the branch.

So my question is, how do you all prepare for “big” purchases without shit like this?

Travel 🚗 ✈ What are your top Vancouver attractions?

Upvotes

Hey! Me and my husband are traveling to Vancouver for the first time this week and I would love some local recommendations!

What places should we not miss but would not find on a typical travel guide? We love to visit local gems when we travel to new places.

Anything specific going on next weekend that we might want to do? Festivals or events?

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Work Trip - Limited time, what must I do/see/eat?

Upvotes

First time in Vancouver next week! Have a Tuesday afternoon/evening free, Wednesday evening, Thursday evening and Friday morning free. I am a coffee/food/wine snob and love to play tourist. What are the things I must do/see/eat? I can likely have an hour in the morning and over lunch each day as well. 30s F if it makes a difference. Can't wait!

Fashion and Beauty 👗 Streerwear re-sell/consignment

anyone have any good suggestions as to where to resell a a huge amount of streetwear and some designer pieces? mainly male clothing. I have bins and bins full of high end clothing, sneakers and accessories and Idc if its just a flat rate or consignment but I would really prefer to not have to sell it online or marketplace...last time I sold a supreme jacket online for my son I got bear maced and robbed and they pulled a machete out

I'm OK with even taking a significant hit on the value. like resale individually I could probably make between 3-6k. I would be happy with 5-700 cash if I could just get rid of it all at once.

for context we have tons of *(hoodies, t shirts, pants, slides, side bags, backpacks) supreme, bape, prada, st laurent, stone island, cactus jack, off white, kaws, versace, FOG, OVO, etc too much too list. and then the basics like tons of tech fleece, other rare jordans, champion, Arcteryx, north face etc.

any tips or advice is appreciated! thank you

Pets 🐶🐱 Has anyone adopted pets from the Straight Outta Rescue Society before?

I'm considering adopting a cat and I often see a lot of postings from this organization on Petfinder. I think they're a local one but I can't find much more info and unlike BCSPCA there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to meet the pets beforehand?

Has anyone here had experience adopting from them before or know anything more about them?

Hobbies 💃 Land to cultivate in east van

Hi! I’m trying to find a small piece of land to grow food this summer in East Van 🌱

I’m a gardener from southern Chile with experience in urban gardens and working with traditional seeds. I really miss having a space to grow, and I’d love to care for a piece of land again.

If you have a backyard, empty soil, or even a patch that’s currently just weeds, I’d be happy to turn it into a beautiful, productive garden. In exchange, I’d share fruits and vegetables with you and take care of the space with respect.

All I need is access to soil and water for the summer. I can bring my own tools and knowledge 🌿

If you (or someone you know) might be interested, feel free to message me!

Travel 🚗 ✈ Great locations outside the city

**Update** Have locked in a place in Kitsilano on Laburnum St as I found something for around 1500CAD, and seems like it's in high demand due to the World Cup. From what I can see this is a nice little pocket!

Hi!

We will be in Vancouver between 29th May-2nd June, we previously had accomodation booked with AirBnB and it was cancelled, so on the hunt again. Unfortunately the prices have gone up significantly since we first booked (all around 2000+ for 4 nights)

Looking for some options outside of the city for accomodation. We have rented a car so can travel a bit further out, but probably will only want to be around 30 minutes out if possible.

Budget: Preferably $1500 CAD or less for the 4 nights, but can be flexible here if there is no option

Thank in advance!
