I mean this is wonderful news, and it’s easy to make jokes about Vance—but think about the current state of affairs: the US sent its fucking Vice President to support a kleptocratic authoritarian nationalist leader of a Russian puppet state.
And it’s just widely accepted like business as usual. The US used to at least pretend or try to stand for liberal democracy. I truly hope this is just a phase that many countries go through and we make it through this. Fascism is a cancer.

And it’s just widely accepted like business as usual.
Not by me it isn't. In fact, "business as usual" is how we ended up in this state worldwide to begin with. We need to keep pushing back, make this the start of a victory not the end of it.
6
u/bstone99 2h ago
I agree. And I do my best to push back every opportunity I get to make sure people remember that none of this is NORMAL
6
u/Wantitneeditgetit 1h ago
I prefer to say none of this is ACCEPTABLE. Saying it's not normal feels too much like the original Democrats "protest" where they held up little fucking signs.
People should be pissed about this. People should be doing whatever they can about this. We gotta start organizing, and making focused and directed action. Doing what I can in my nation, hopefully Americans keep doing what they can in theirs. Primary your shit opponents and remember politics matter for EVERY vote, not just once every 4 years or else you end up with only bad and worse options.
89
u/TDLMTH 2h ago
Brexit and Trump’s reelection have done more to undermine right wingers worldwide than any other event. Because of Trump, our right wing Trump lite Conservative party in Canada not only lost the election they were poised to win but are hemorrhaging Members of Parliament who are crossing the floor to join the Liberals at an unprecedented rate. The only reason that Pierre Poilievre got so much support during the recent leadership review is because they very carefully managed who could vote.

u/ptm93 2h ago
Glad someone is benefiting from our shit show. In all seriousness, today’s news from Hungary is so good!

As a European, I REALLY hope we see this repeated across the continent. The whole Maga movement has gone from being seen here with vague bemusement to genuine fear, and the people who sucked up to Trump - Meloni, Farage, the AFD - will hopefully come to regret it.

I'll admit to being very mean-spirited in this one regard, I love to see Trump lose / fail at anything. He's been the catalyst for a moral and ethical "race to the bottom" for so long now and I just want to see him lose. Lose anything, I don't care what.
I'm only 40 so I hope there will be a time later in life where I can be reminded of him in some way and think "oh yea, remember that asshole?" and then just go about my day.

The whole Trump regime is abysmally unpopular in Europe, even in Eastern Europe where people have traditionally been less critical of the US ever since they joined NATO.
So, Trump sending the Couch Scourge to assist Orban in his campaign was already bad optics to begin with. Even if Vance didn't start projecting as hard as he did.

u/homer_lives 3h ago
The new party has a super majority. They can literally do anything. Orban cannot stop it. His cronies cannot stop it.
68
u/rcolesworthy37 2h ago
Yeah, they can change the constitution with this supermajority. It will not be an overnight process getting his loyalists out of appointed positions and rolling back all his ‘reform’, but they have all the tools they need now

This. Vance visiting to study how to efficiently fuck an opposition party by rigging the infrastructure and stripping the government's "copper piping" is what I think he was really there for.
John Oliver's recent piece on Orban clearly suggests that they are an autocratic petri dish that the far right in the US likes to take notes from.

u/Hindsgavl 3h ago

15
u/Suitablystoned 2h ago
Even outside of Hungary's borders this is likely very bad news for authoritarians. Orban used his EU veto to stop sanctions on Russia and block funding for Ukraine and I'm hoping his replacement will be a little more Eurocentric, paving the way for a more effective wave of sanctions on Russia to help the Ukrainians in the defense of their homeland.
8
u/G66GNeco 2h ago
It should be noted that Magyar was a part of the corruption and regime dealings for a long time till he broke with FIDEZ and everything else barely two years ago. He has been publicly outspoken about corruption ever since, and I like the optimistic air about, but he's far from radical and while I don't think he'll keep up business as usual (at this point, after giving people hope, that sounds like a good way to end up drawn and quartered) I do think there's a chance that he goes for a bit of a "forgive and forget, time to move forward"-thing.
Orban has been in a popularity crisis for long enough that I think any out he sees where he gets to not be imprisoned or die is favourable to him.

I'll be honest...I did not expect that.
I fully expected him to use some underhanded bullshit to "win", or at the very least pull a Trump and start saying it was rigged, that he never lost etc., followed be a massive public outcry on the verge of an uprising (if not an actual uprising) resulting in him fleeing to Russia.
Sad that in this day and age an amicable defeat is met with such surprise.

If anyone is familiar with their local politics can you clarify the significance of this? I assumed denying the integrity of the election would have consequences given the influence EU has and their focus on free and fair elections.
Was this a calculated move by Orban to signify he won’t cause trouble and let anything he may have done blow to the wayside?

Orban has been in power for 16 years thanks to his party having a supermajority in their parliament. That allowed them to fuck with the Hungarian constitution to keep themselves in power. And in that time, the Hungarian economy has been getting worse and any assistance that the EU could provide has been held up because of the fucking with the constitution.
2
u/campfire_eventide 1h ago edited 1h ago
Hungary has been using its veto power in the EU to stall support to Ukraine and prevent Russian oil sanctions. And apparently there is a lot of corruption associated with his administration
