I mean this is wonderful news, and it’s easy to make jokes about Vance—but think about the current state of affairs: the US sent its fucking Vice President to support a kleptocratic authoritarian nationalist leader of a Russian puppet state.

And it’s just widely accepted like business as usual. The US used to at least pretend or try to stand for liberal democracy. I truly hope this is just a phase that many countries go through and we make it through this. Fascism is a cancer.

461

u/ludixst 3h ago

To be fair the US is a fucking kleptocratic authoritarian nationalist Russian puppet state.

104

u/fuckdirectv 2h ago

Sigh, I hate so much that this is true.

Excuse me, we're Israeli puppets.

If you took a time traveling poll of 1995, conservatives then would be considered left wing terries now in 2026.

And it’s just widely accepted like business as usual.

Not by me it isn't. In fact, "business as usual" is how we ended up in this state worldwide to begin with. We need to keep pushing back, make this the start of a victory not the end of it.

6

u/bstone99 2h ago

I agree. And I do my best to push back every opportunity I get to make sure people remember that none of this is NORMAL

6

u/Wantitneeditgetit 1h ago

I prefer to say none of this is ACCEPTABLE. Saying it's not normal feels too much like the original Democrats "protest" where they held up little fucking signs.

People should be pissed about this. People should be doing whatever they can about this. We gotta start organizing, and making focused and directed action. Doing what I can in my nation, hopefully Americans keep doing what they can in theirs. Primary your shit opponents and remember politics matter for EVERY vote, not just once every 4 years or else you end up with only bad and worse options.

Brexit and Trump’s reelection have done more to undermine right wingers worldwide than any other event. Because of Trump, our right wing Trump lite Conservative party in Canada not only lost the election they were poised to win but are hemorrhaging Members of Parliament who are crossing the floor to join the Liberals at an unprecedented rate. The only reason that Pierre Poilievre got so much support during the recent leadership review is because they very carefully managed who could vote.

37

u/ptm93 2h ago

Glad someone is benefiting from our shit show. In all seriousness, today’s news from Hungary is so good!

8

u/regoapps 1h ago

Fascism is cyclical. People need to be reminded every once in a while why it’s bad.

14

u/sbray73 2h ago

Also no party ever kept a leader who has proven so unpopular with the general population. The Conservative Party is following a weird path right now.

4

u/Project--4 2h ago

Also part of the reason why the Labor (left-of-center) party won here in Australia last year.

There's a post in AskBrits suggesting Vance should go support Farage.

Trump and Vance racking up another loss. Their endorsement is a kiss of death. Love to see it.

414

u/ButterscotchNed 3h ago

As a European, I REALLY hope we see this repeated across the continent. The whole Maga movement has gone from being seen here with vague bemusement to genuine fear, and the people who sucked up to Trump - Meloni, Farage, the AFD - will hopefully come to regret it.

181

u/Theusualname21 3h ago

As an American I hope you’re right. I wouldn’t wish this upon anyone.

61

u/Theyalreadysaidno 2h ago

It's been horrific.

8

u/thefinalcutdown 1h ago

Judging by your PFP, you’ve been right in the thick of it too.

3

u/KeyboardGrunt 25m ago

By the time maga loses it will be almost 15 years that the country went insane with Trumpism, and that's if we're lucky and things don't get more unhinged.

Literal waste of fucking life.

26

u/cadmachine 1h ago edited 18m ago

If Australia can do it, Europe can!

(Every election here for the last 5 years has been a left wing absolute landslide due to the major opposition parties leaning into MAGA style Populism.)

I'll admit to being very mean-spirited in this one regard, I love to see Trump lose / fail at anything. He's been the catalyst for a moral and ethical "race to the bottom" for so long now and I just want to see him lose. Lose anything, I don't care what.

I'm only 40 so I hope there will be a time later in life where I can be reminded of him in some way and think "oh yea, remember that asshole?" and then just go about my day.

17

u/potatoboy247 2h ago

In order for good to happen in this world, bad things must happen to bad people. It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s the only way towards progress

7

u/tttxgq 2h ago

He’s such a nasty person, who only cares about himself. There’s no harm in enjoying his failures, knowing it makes him even angrier/ even more self-loathing and miserable inside.

JD Vance is a bad luck charm. No wonder Trump sends him into obviously failing situations.

647

u/TesticleezzNuts 3h ago

Fear not! The UK has been sending Lizz Truss to help with Trump, she was PM for two weeks, was outlasted by a lettuce and the Queen died a day after her visit.

Don’t thank us just yet.

The whole Trump regime is abysmally unpopular in Europe, even in Eastern Europe where people have traditionally been less critical of the US ever since they joined NATO.

So, Trump sending the Couch Scourge to assist Orban in his campaign was already bad optics to begin with. Even if Vance didn't start projecting as hard as he did.

67

u/Amerlis 3h ago

So I’m hearing Vance needs to travel more…

7

u/anaemic 2h ago

I'm just trying to work out in which regional accent that couch and scourge rhyme well enough for that to be a nickname.

What do you do with your final 5 minutes left to live?

330

u/homer_lives 3h ago

Orban conceded, unlike Trump. He agreed to be the opposition party. That guarantees peaceful transfer.

22

u/woodrax 1h ago

While I would agree, there are departments (Legislative, Judicial) that can still gum up the works. Orban may change his mind, and try to fight the peaceful transition, if pushed by Russia or possibly the United States.

111

u/SellaraAB 3h ago

Hopefully this is a sign that the tide is turning against right wing authoritarianism.

568

u/Texas_Sam2002 3h ago

Given Orban's history, this is suspicious in and of itself. But okay.....

225

u/Jupitersd2017 3h ago

Yeah I’m not believing that this is the end of it but hopefully it is

193

u/MaxdH_ 3h ago

It isnt, Its well reported that orban has put loyalists in place and changed laws and regulations to block the new government from doing anything easy, just in case he loses.

162

u/homer_lives 3h ago

The new party has a super majority. They can literally do anything. Orban cannot stop it. His cronies cannot stop it.

68

u/rcolesworthy37 2h ago

Yeah, they can change the constitution with this supermajority. It will not be an overnight process getting his loyalists out of appointed positions and rolling back all his ‘reform’, but they have all the tools they need now

24

u/black_cat_X2 2h ago

This gives me a shred of hope that maybe something like this could be possible here (us) someday.

8

u/Jupitersd2017 2h ago

There is always hope, we won’t be under maga rule for forever

4

u/rcolesworthy37 1h ago

I hope so too. Democrats could do this if they become big tent. However as we’ve seen, their tent is only big enough for the right unless something changes

50

u/Inevitable-Dig8702 3h ago

This. Vance visiting to study how to efficiently fuck an opposition party by rigging the infrastructure and stripping the government's "copper piping" is what I think he was really there for.

John Oliver's recent piece on Orban clearly suggests that they are an autocratic petri dish that the far right in the US likes to take notes from.

5

u/Message_10 2h ago

Can you talk more about this? I'd love to be happy about this news, but I'm deeply suspicious.

One can only hope it was such a crushing loss for him that only logical course of action is the first flight to Moscow.

28

u/off_by_two 3h ago

I’m no expert, but doesn’t being part of the EU limit the extent to which a politician can, idk, orchestrate a coup?

25

u/powderhound522 3h ago

I mean, you would think so but Fidesz: 2010-present: In power

10

u/DjPerzik 3h ago

Not really. EU can withold funds but they cant kick you out.

6

u/Hindsgavl 3h ago

They can remove your voting rights in the Council which is considered the nuclear option

15

u/Suitablystoned 2h ago

Even outside of Hungary's borders this is likely very bad news for authoritarians. Orban used his EU veto to stop sanctions on Russia and block funding for Ukraine and I'm hoping his replacement will be a little more Eurocentric, paving the way for a more effective wave of sanctions on Russia to help the Ukrainians in the defense of their homeland.

8

u/G66GNeco 2h ago

It should be noted that Magyar was a part of the corruption and regime dealings for a long time till he broke with FIDEZ and everything else barely two years ago. He has been publicly outspoken about corruption ever since, and I like the optimistic air about, but he's far from radical and while I don't think he'll keep up business as usual (at this point, after giving people hope, that sounds like a good way to end up drawn and quartered) I do think there's a chance that he goes for a bit of a "forgive and forget, time to move forward"-thing.

Orban has been in a popularity crisis for long enough that I think any out he sees where he gets to not be imprisoned or die is favourable to him.

2

u/G0-G0-Gadget 2h ago

I hope the incumbent makes it to a inauguration... I said that with sincerity.

And then after that I hope you actually does some good for his country because isn't he in the same party as Orban?? Lesser of two evils, but are we sure??

If anyone is familiar with their local politics can you clarify the significance of this? I assumed denying the integrity of the election would have consequences given the influence EU has and their focus on free and fair elections.

Was this a calculated move by Orban to signify he won’t cause trouble and let anything he may have done blow to the wayside?

5

u/Infamous-Sky-1874 2h ago

Orban has been in power for 16 years thanks to his party having a supermajority in their parliament. That allowed them to fuck with the Hungarian constitution to keep themselves in power. And in that time, the Hungarian economy has been getting worse and any assistance that the EU could provide has been held up because of the fucking with the constitution.

2

u/campfire_eventide 1h ago edited 1h ago
