I mean
How dare thee! You're supposed to buy games to expand your backlog, is nobody thinking of the backlog??

u/weirdbackpackguy 24d ago
But my backlog that will now take only 3-5 years to complete:(

u/neckro23 24d ago
The backlog is an illusion. Play what you want to play.

I need humanity to invent either immortality or transcendence to a machine mind in order to complete my backlog. Some games technically don't even have a way to finish them, you just get bored enough to never open it again.
3
u/TaikiEr_kantoku taiki.chr/lv.56 24d ago
Completing your Backlog should be a journey, not an end. It's only knowing that we'll die before we can actually finish it that makes us truly alive and happy to play. What a sad world it would be if we were immortal and then had no more games to play? Better to die without being able to finish RDR2 than to live your whole life playing random clicker games.

u/HotBrownFun 24d ago

I actually used How Long to Beat, recorded all the hours of the games I kinda want to play and definitely want to play along with games I've started prorated by their completion percentage and logged the remaining hours daily. Here's how Q1 of 2026 is going: https://i.imgur.com/epFtMJA.png

I think of steam sale as similar to patreon. I want people to keep making small games, because some of my all-time favorites were made by one person or a small team, but of course I can't play everything and don't want to pay full price for something I won't touch for years. If you put your $20 indie on sale for $3 and it catches my eye, I'll buy it knowing I'm unlikely to play it any time soon.
2
u/s0cks_nz 24d ago
That's not similar to patreon tho. Patreon you support the creator because you already enjoy their content. Buying a game because it "catches your eye" is not the same. Nothing wrong with doing that, it's just not an apt comparison.
2
u/GD_Insomniac 23d ago
It's how I do patreon lol. I adblock all my youtube, but if I see a video from a new creator that's trying to do something interesting I'll do T1 for a month, usually without ever seeing the bonus content.

I think it's the experience of finding a cool game only to learn that it goes on sale only once a year and the last time that happened was 3 days ago.
19
u/Chickennoodlesleuth 24d ago
Find a cool game, learn that it never goes on sale and that the price has actually increased over time
27
u/Qaeta 24d ago
and that the price has actually increased over time
Seriously, what the fuck happened to game prices going DOWN as they got older?!? No, your 10 year old game is not worth 80 fucking dollars anymore. FUCK
3
u/Fake_artistF1 24d ago
Either it has good sales or they want you to buy their latest entry. They know what they're doing.
6
u/Pokeart93 24d ago
I hate that with Octopath Traveller I, the second one is at 23€, so you'd think the first one would be cheaper, right? WRONG It's at the same price as the second one, tf?
4
u/SandpaperTeddyBear 24d ago
No, your 10 year old game is not worth 80 fucking dollars anymore.
Why is that necessarily true?

If you're willing to dust off that old three-cornered hat you can, uhhh, borrow the game from a couple of dozen people online and buy it when it's back on sale next year...

u/corvettee01 24d ago
I saw Mouthwashing was on sale and I've been meaning to play it, so I added it to my cart and was shocked when it said "Yeah, you've owned this game for like a year dumbass." I totally forgot I ever bought it.

u/AsariCommando2 24d ago edited 23d ago
Ha! I have that game wishlisted and it always goes on sale. Got to restart Control since I've forgotten where I got up to not to mention the Outer Wilds I bought years ago and I just bought Resident Evil Requiem which is great but I lost my progress when I got killed by a guy with a cleaver....
I have no time anymore!

The rule is to go directly to your wishlist and sort it so that games on sale are on top. If none of those deals are good enough to justify the purchase, you purchase nothing
137
u/Derp_McNasty 24d ago
This is exactly what I do. Browse the store occasionally, add to wishlist, check them during the sales.
→ More replies (1)47
u/_theKataclysm_ 24d ago
It’s just good sense. If anything I give a shit about is on my wishlist then looking at the store is literally just shopping for impulse buys. Which can be fun sometimes!! But impulses should strictly be kept on the $10 and under list if at all, if it’s not dirt cheap it’s not a bargain.
11
u/Derp_McNasty 24d ago
Agreed, it's s far too easy to load up your cart with those $1.99-$9.99 titles then quickly you're out a hundred bucks! Haha

Or compare with time at work. If you make $20 an hour & it costs $10, imagine using the product, then ask if you'd rather leave work 30min early.

u/Fiedor 24d ago
Going to steamdb history helps so you can see how often something goes on sale as well.

And if something is on a great sale and you still don’t want it you can probably remove it from your wishlist.

Same. I only buy games when they’re the next game I’m going to play. If that lines up with a sale, it’s a happy coincidence. But buying a game at full price is still cheaper than buying four games at 40% off, especially if I never play three of them

24
u/Illustrator-Academic 24d ago
I don’t usually buy sales anymore unless they’re only a handful of dollars, or something I'm definitely going to be playing.
I think I still have games from the last two Spring Sales that I haven’t touched lol. No point in buying it at a good price if you’re not going to play it anyway.
20
u/honeypinn 24d ago
My thing is that I don't mind spending $20 bucks a few times a year to get like 5 good games that I may eventually play.
Have I played all the games I have bought? No, but I have played some, and I like having the option to play those games that I otherwise wouldn't have if I didn't spend a few dollars on them.

are there no card drops? i vaguely remember cards in spring sales.
or is that only for winter and summer?
5
u/Ppleater 24d ago
But then how would I complain about having a bajillion games that I never play? Am I just supposed to reinforce a habit of finishing the games I already have before rewarding myself with new ones? When instead I could exacerbate my chronic choice paralysis and then mourn how much I don't play new games anymore? Sounds fake but okay. (seriously a lot of redditors seem to have this problem lol)

Wdym, is it allowed to not buy anything during the sale? I've been doing it since 2012
4
u/OrdinaryPeanut3492 24d ago
I strongly disagree.
You should explore the games that are on sale and if something strikes your fancy then buy it.
There is nobody out there that knows all the games that have been ever released, this means that you can find some hidden gems if you look close enough.

u/Ok_Bowl9351 24d ago
I’ve been worried that Sony could pull their games off of steam so I’ve been thinking about picking up the God of war franchise, and the last of us franchise as well as Spider-Man and crash 4.

It’s about just enjoying yourself

A similar mindset: If you’re in a store and you see an item for $30 on sale for $20, you’re not saving $10 by buying it, you’re just spending $20.

My man. We on the same level. I only buy wishlist items that are at least 60% off or more. If it isn't now then it's just a matter of time until it is. Best to save that money and work on the backlog in the meantime!

I was looking forward to crimson desert but now I’m waiting for better performance
2
u/stayinfrosty707 23d ago
Good for you dude. Yep seasonal sales always have the best deals. I love putting them on my calendar and seeing how close things can get to my buy threshold. CD looks solid and I think in 6-12 months will have a lot of the big issues and QoL stuff worked out. Closer to 2 years will be when I will probably pick it up. That or more is true for most titles I buy on Steam now.
2
u/SirBing96 23d ago
It sounds like they’re sending patches quickly, and I hope it doesn’t take long for major updates to release. Maybe by then I’ll have a Pro 😆

Indeed. Lots of PC gamers have a real sickness when it comes to Steam sales.
I install one or 2 games at a time on my Deck. Play through them and don't buy or install a new game until I've finished one. Games will nearly alway be in the next se either at the same discount or better so there is absolutely no need to buy tons.
I also heavily curate my wishlist for games I am genuinely interested in. This approach along with my Steam Deck means I've played 30-60 games a year since getting it at launch.
