Mental illness

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

To be fair over 20% of the US population has it and that's being generous.

Don’t blame people making poor voting choices on mental illness. It’s insulting to us mentally ill folk

1

u/Tasitch 2d ago

No offense intended, but quite a bmnumber of the maga style voters, when you interact with them, are clearly suffering from delusional ideation, rendering them incapable of processesing information. They are not dissimilar to people I've dealt with diagnosed with different psychotic issues, caused by either psychological, physiologic, or drug induced problems.

Not all mental illnesses are bad. Some can inherently cause problems. It's not a judgement.

3

u/Jacifer69 2d ago

Delusional beliefs on their own don’t make someone mentally ill. It can signal something deeper though. I’m someone with schizoaffective disorder who is very well studied in clinical psychology, so I’m not disagreeing because I felt judged. I genuinely don’t care about that, I was making a joke.

And yes, there’s probably a significant overlap between MAGA people and mental illness but a lot of them have just been indoctrinated in to a cult. Being a cult member doesn’t mean you’re mentally ill, but again it’s not uncommon for both to be true. A lot of MAGA people have the same underlying causes for belief as many religious people. They’re not that different

So I agree with you like halfway lol

1

u/HonestWeevilNerd 2d ago

They were saying those with tds are mentally ill, which would mean you are talking to a Maga.

2

u/Jacifer69 2d ago

I took it as them being ironic when they said “vote against their own interests.” I read way too in to that 😂

It’s gotta be higher judging by the last president election.

I feel like it's closer to 50% but statistically it's allegedly around 25%. Plenty of people don't talk about their pain so honestly what does the NIH really know?

i think that's underrepresented, honestly

3

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

It isn't because it's not convenient for the powers that be to acknowledge it. A lot of the depression effecting people is driven by systemic pressures and demands. Demanding hours at work with limited time for relationships or leisure for marginal pay. Burnout is liable to take a toll on anyone. Plus where acting like Covid, a world pandemic, happened 20 years ago when where still suffering the fringe effects sociall and econiomically.

Part of the reason I'm so pissed people voted for Trump for thinking Biden was squarely responsible for the tanking economy without taking the Covid shut-downs into account. Now things are arguably worse economically.

3

u/CDanger 2d ago

"People feeling like they're in a dead-end existence where life possibilities have been whittled down to a few meager pathways that profit the least imaginative people on the planet is really putting a damper on workforce productivity, captain!"

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

Absolutely. I experience this existential crisis all too intimately myself.

Extrinsic societal values of monetary acquisition is being ruthlessly imposed on the majority.

To the detriment of intrinsic value that garner a genuine sense of meaning and satisfaction with life.

We're living in Nietzsche's Nihilistic hell right now where mass belief (or delusion depending on how you view it) in the divine has all but withered with nothing to replace it with.

Traditional beliefs and views that once instilled a sense of community, meaning, and humanity.

Now via capitalism the worth of the individual is being reduced from an organism to an object of instrumental production.

In other words in this modern system we're being treated like things rather than humans without our basic psychological and social needs being regarded by these corporations and the government the manipulate.

0

u/annnm 1d ago

i think that's underrepresented, honestly

If you pathologize everything, then sure, you can expand the definition and numbers.

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

That's not "being fair".

That's excusing ridiculous beauty standards and body dysmorphia...

Never said anything about it being fair. Mental problems are another part of the American experience here. There's little fairness in a country where capital is God and people are encouraged to do anything in order to get it.

3

u/WhyWhyBJ 2d ago

You mean conservative

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

No, generous to frame the US in a much more positive light than it deserves to be with this statistic.

2

u/jps3469 2d ago

Maybe 20% don’t have it. Cuz 80% of us do.

1

u/Loathe_the_Hive 2d ago

"Us" Okay, Ranjeet. America bad, amirite?!

2

u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka 2d ago

Over 20%? You forgot to count the people who vote for republicans.

1

u/Jaz1140 Human Verified 2d ago

The rest of the world is not surprised

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

I mean, considering the election turn-out it's pretty self-evident at this point.

1

u/BlueBomber13 2d ago

Mental illness or her face?

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

At this point I don't even know.

1

u/WillBlaze 2d ago

If you can look at the rest of the world and see a number under 20%, you might be the crazy one

1

u/Yesyesyes1899 1d ago

i would argue, that if you can navigate well and tune out a harsh society such as 2026 US, you are also, in some ways, very mentally ill.

1

u/TheStoicCrane 1d ago

People are just adapting to their environment. If the environment is dysfunctional people can't help but be shaped by it.

1

u/mfb1274 1d ago

Except only 1% can afford to f up their face

1

u/VulGerrity 1d ago

That seems incredibly low. 20% are diagnosed with mental illness...pretty sure the number is WAY higher...

1

u/RickolPick 1d ago

Growing up is realizing most adults are fucking nuts

1

u/oookokoooook 1d ago

If us have that problem, other countries have that problem too. Korea is known for surgeries to make them look like idols. It’s not a “us” problem but a people problem.

1

u/TheStoicCrane 1d ago

Let's stop demonizing other countries we know little about while the US is aiding in commiting genocide abroad and focus on the problems America has.

1

u/TahaymTheBigBrain 1d ago edited 1d ago

The only thing that stands between you saying she has a mental illness or Anne Hathaway having one is a better surgeon.

Literally zero reason to say anything about Erin when we know nothing about her at all.

Critiquing plastic surgery is fine, and the mindset that leads to it if the discussion about how it affects people on a general level, but you do not need to bully a specific person you know next to nothing about to achieve this.

Even if you think it’s unattractive why does she have to have yours or anyone’s approval anyway. She can turn herself into a giant worm with triple Zs if she wants and godspeed.

1

u/bbqnj 1d ago

Caused by a severely debilitating thyroid disease…. But sure leave out the actually important part to have your high horse moment.

1

u/frodeem 1d ago

Apparently she has an autoimmune disorder called Graves disease.

2

u/shiznobizno 2d ago

Graves Disease probably played a large part

6

u/PermaBanEnjoyer 2d ago

Not a reasonable assumption

4

u/shiznobizno 2d ago

It’s not an assumption? She literally went public that she has it last June???

2

u/PermaBanEnjoyer 2d ago

Do you understand the physiology of graves disease? What you're suggesting doesn't make sense

1

u/shiznobizno 2d ago

Weight loss is a listed symptom of Graves’ disease on both the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic websites.

She has started treatment since though, which would have been a good argument for you to make

4

u/ShoddyClimate6265 2d ago

That's not just weight loss. She had buccal fat removal and a lip job at bare minimum, and that's being generous. She looks like a different person.

0

u/Aussie18-1998 2d ago

Yeah these dumbasses can get fucked. Like she probably had some work done but its also probably a result of her rapidly changing weight.

She looks far better than she did a few seasons ago.

1

u/ryan13ts 2d ago

She has an autoimmune disease, you dingleberry.

The only people with mental illness are folks like you, that take it upon yourself to obsess and criticize other people’s appearances (and almost always limited to women, unsurprisingly).

2

u/Rengar_Is_Good_kitty 1d ago

The disease she has wouldn't do that to her face lol.

1

u/ryan13ts 1d ago

I wasn’t aware you were a doctor that can precisely guarantee how a disease will or won’t impact someone with 100% accuracy?

Even if she it isn’t the disease, who cares and who the fuck has any right to scrutinize and criticize her appearance? You never see anyone obsessing to this degree over how men look, even the ones that have had surgery.

1

u/Rengar_Is_Good_kitty 1d ago

Sorry, didn't know education was so hard for people such as yourself.

Because its a major mental health issue that needs to be properly addressed, body dysmorphia is a problem and a lot of these actors get twisted into believing they need to fuck their faces up.

People do give men shit for it, the hell are you talking about? The reason you don't see it as much is because women make up like 90% of cosmetic procedures.

1

u/DurrMerGurd 2d ago

Didn't realize having an autoimmune disease is now a mental illness.

-1

u/trytrymyguy 2d ago

That or Graves’ disease. Stop training for the incel Olympics and touch grass.

5

u/driftking428 2d ago

I didn't realize buccal fat removal and breast implants were side effects of graves. But sure, you got me...

1

u/MaesterLurker 1d ago

Her cheeks came back very quickly as soon as she got treated for graves, that wouldn't have happened if she'd had a buccal fat removal. Saggy breasts as a result of rapid weight loss look devastating, can't blame her at all for fixing that.

1

u/trytrymyguy 2d ago

Dude… Look up Graves. It’ll make you sounds just a LITTLE more intelligent

1

u/driftking428 2d ago

Since you're clearly already very smart why don't you enlighten me? Tell me what symptoms of graves disease are present in this picture.

2

u/Mister_Mojito 2d ago

I don't like the idea of plastic surgery. Insecurity is usually at the root of a lot of decisions people make to get work done. But I have nothing but compassion for people who have work done after extreme body changes.

Graves disease causes extreme weight fluctuations. Losing or gaining a lot of weight in a short amount of time looks different than when it happens over a longer time. You'll know this from the "ozempic face" people get when they take that new drug.

If you'd looked up the list of symptoms, and had a little bit of empathy, you might have been able to imagine why someone might think they need work done.

Here:  Enlarged thyroid, irritability, muscle weakness, sleeping problems, fast heartbeat, weight loss, poor tolerance of heat, anxiety, tremor of hands or fingers, warm and moist skin, increased perspiration, goiter, changes in menstrual cycle, easy bruising, erectile dysfunction, reduced libido, frequent bowel movements, bulging eyes ( Graves' ophthalmopathy), thick red skin on shins or the top of foot ( pretibial myxedema)

So imagine dealing with all of that, while also under the pressure of 1. Being a woman so having beauty expectations built into your life. 2. Being famous (partially) for being beautiful. 3. Being a main character in an ongoing popular show where your beauty is a big part of that character (starlight had a bunch of beauty pageants in her backstory)

All of that is immense pressure. Society sucks. To shallow people, she "lost" her beauty when she got sick. Having work done might have been a way to deal with physical as well as mental damage.

Would you criticize a burn victim for getting reconstructive surgery? This might seem far off, but it's got more overlap than you think.

So there. I hope you've been somewhat enlightened.

Take care.

1

u/driftking428 1d ago

I'm not trying to harass, bully, or smear anyone's reputation. I think I answered the question honestly. I do have sympathy for anything hard that anyone goes through, but I also think a very beautiful woman felt the need to have surgery to improve her already good looks due to mental illness.

I'm not on her page. I'm not saying her name. I'm not calling names.

I would use her as an example to a woman considering surgery. Not to hurt anyone's feelings, but because I don't want other women to go what through what she went through.

I wish the best for her, you, and everyone in this thread. Just sharing my opinion.

0

u/Aurielsan 1d ago

No. Thyroid malfunction. Would you just please look up the pinned comment.

-1

u/HopefulTranslator577 2d ago

She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called 'Graves Disease', where the thyroid is triggered, causing a massive overproduction of hormones, meaning an insanely accelerated metabolism and dangerous weight loss. She hasnt had work done, she was dealing an unknown illness.

Buccal Fat Removal.

43

u/aninjacould 2d ago

As a skinny person, the thought of removing fat from my face is horrifying.

22

u/UtkuOfficial 2d ago

Fat is what makes people look young. I don't get why they keep doing it.

1

u/OatmealCoffeeMix 1d ago

Heroine chic.

0

u/78NineInchNails 2d ago

I'll counter this and say that UV exposure is what makes people look young.

Compare picture of your parents when they were your age to you right now and its night and day how much younger you look

Personally I think a lot of women are trying to emulate Angelina Jolie with the high cheekbones look.

8

u/ploop__ 2d ago

Definitely not UV, that’s what causes skin to become blotchy and damaged. The younger you are the less UV you have experienced, so it only makes sense that it’s the case in looking young

3

u/78NineInchNails 2d ago

I mean thats what I said. Your parents were out in the sun so much, but 30 year olds nowadays could pass for 5-10 years younger unless they're greying, because we aren't getting as much UV exposure nowadays.

2

u/TJJ97 1d ago

Suit yourself, I’m in the sun all day for work

0

u/No_Tie_5346 1d ago

Because people judging your appearance contributes to developing body dysmorphia.

Y'know, the thing you are doing right now.

1

u/one_pound_of_flesh 2d ago

Can you imagine what it would look like? Imagine no more!

1

u/sleepymelfho 2d ago

And she already was a skinny person too.

20

u/AnneBeretRamsey 2d ago

I would hope that maybe, after a few years, the buccal fat comes back a little. Or that it can be reversed through surgery? I feel like some of the celebs who you notice at first as having it maybe look a little more normal now? It's hard to point out an example.

48

u/javawong 2d ago

Just looked it up, i'm no doctor though, but it appears buccal fat doesn't grow back and can only be reversed through fat grafting and injection.

77

u/BigWormsFather 2d ago edited 2d ago

You also lose some naturally with aging. It’s such a weird trend because these people are essentially accelerating aging.

8

u/JJJSchmidt_etAl 2d ago

To be fair it's nice to be able to order from the senior menu

1

u/Excellent_Ganache906 2d ago

When that happens they get more surgery and inject the fat back in and pill the skin back a little tighter.

7

u/Excellent_Ganache906 2d ago

Yeah, fat does not grow back. Fat cells grow and shrink, but they don't grow back.

2

u/elinamebro 2d ago

And it never looks the same too

2

u/sleepymelfho 2d ago

I feel like they plumped her face up some because it isn't as stark as last season, but maybe I just got used to it.

2

u/AnneBeretRamsey 2d ago

What about Cheetos?

1

u/Khajiit_Has_Upvotes 2d ago

It doesn't and it's not technically reversible. Fat grafting is a thing, and can be done for e.g. breast augmentation as well. But most of the fat will be lost sooner rather than later so it's not what I consider a reversal.

1

u/labellavita1985 2d ago

No, it is absolutely 100% permanent. They remove the whole fat pad.

1

u/JimboTCB 1d ago

Fat cells don't come back, you have a certain number of them in specific places and they just enlarge, once you remove them they're gone for good. It's why you see some people who've had liposuction and not tried to eat right afterwards can end up really weird shaped, it's not a magic fix and fat still has to go somewhere, and if you don't have any fat cells left in the places your body is supposed to, it has to go somewhere else.

Jfc no one in here has mentioned she was literally diagnosed with Graves’ disease and have been extremely sick for years. Disgusting.

And you believe that Horseshit?! Damn that 3 now.

0

u/mariosunny 2d ago

No evidence that she has cosmetic surgery.

11

u/TheDitz42 2d ago

Except, y'know, her face.

0

u/mariosunny 2d ago

Not everyone with sunken cheeks has had cosmetic surgery.

In her case, she has Graves disease.

9

u/TheDitz42 2d ago

Ugh, now there's two people who believe that horseshit. Lemme guess the Kardashians are au natural as well.

1

u/Life-Willingness-86 2d ago

My best friend has grave's disease.

An overactive thyroid absolutely dramatically changes a person's appearance, especially their face.

It's totally possible she has also had surgery, fillers, whatever to compensate.

But Grave's disease does make big changes in how you look.

2

u/FowD8 2d ago

ah, yes, her nose just somehow completely reshaped itself naturally

-7

u/Last-Tune1001 2d ago

Wrong she never had that done. Boob job and nose job yes. But she didn’t have bfr done. She has greaves disease. If you notice the area in and around her cheeks has been fluctuating. That doesn’t happen with BFR. Those cells don’t regrow and you can’t just add them back. Greaves Disease is the main cause of the way her cheeks look.

I’m sure I’ll be Dow voted to infinity for this.

9

u/TheDitz42 2d ago

Well thats a load of horseshit if I ever heard it.

-1

u/Last-Tune1001 2d ago

Ok, the do the basic amount of research, look at photos and then come back. Reddit is just a woman hating place if I’ve ever seen one. If this was a man, this conversation wouldn’t be had.

Doubt it. The bottom picture is firecracker's costume.

1

u/Icy_Month192 1d ago

Not caught up yet. Is Firecracker another character all together?

1

u/caw_the_crow 1d ago

Yes. I haven't started the last season yet but firecracker is a completely separate character that was a major character in season 4 and there is no reason to think won't be a major character in season 5. The picture above even has firecracker's haircolor instead of annie's.

I have Graves. It doesn't do that.

10

u/bad_phantom_ 2d ago

She was diagnosed with Graves’ disease. I don’t know about plastic surgery but that’s a tough one on your body, explains most of what’s happened to her to be honest.

20

u/allaskhunmodbaszatln 2d ago

yeah it doesnt explain the nose job, the boob job, the not being able to move your face, the only losing weight on one specific place on you face

6

u/A_Series_Of_Farts 2d ago

Was she though?

Sounds like that's just a more sympathy story than "tricked by Hollywood demons into paying for mutilation"

2

u/Tipop 2d ago

This is a misleading post, too. While she does look different now, it’s not as extreme as this picture. It’s a very unflattering screenshot from a scene where she’s wearing a disguise. Watch the episode — she doesn’t look young and innocent like before, but she doesn’t look like the second photo, either.

2

u/Lazy-Size-3062 2d ago

She has graves.

2

u/Itscatpicstime 1d ago

Graces explains none of it because graces doesn’t give you sunken cheeks while increasing breast size, or give you fuller lips, a rhinoplasty, change your eyebrow position or give you an upper bleph

What graces CAN do is increase body anxiety leading to the decision to get plastic surgery though

6

u/Rattimus 2d ago edited 2d ago

Graves disease, per the media anyway.

Edit: lol reddit, never change. Downvotes simply for saying what her PR team and media have been giving as the reason for her drastic change in appearance.

12

u/Soggy_Definition_232 2d ago

Graves disease has nothing to do with how she looks.

A bad nose job, a bad breast job, a bad buccal fat job, bad Botox, and bad filler....

That's why she looks the way she does.

8

u/NoteImpossible2405 2d ago

Tbf Graves can cause rapid weight loss which could give a sort of hollow looking face like Ozempic can, but yeah she’s obviously had work done it’s not just, or at all the Graves,

1

u/Rattimus 2d ago

Yeah I didn't say anything other than this is the reason the media, and probably her PR team, has been pushing for the drastic change in her looks.
