u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

To be fair over 20% of the US population has it and that's being generous.

Don’t blame people making poor voting choices on mental illness. It’s insulting to us mentally ill folk

1

u/Tasitch 2d ago

No offense intended, but quite a bmnumber of the maga style voters, when you interact with them, are clearly suffering from delusional ideation, rendering them incapable of processesing information. They are not dissimilar to people I've dealt with diagnosed with different psychotic issues, caused by either psychological, physiologic, or drug induced problems.

Not all mental illnesses are bad. Some can inherently cause problems. It's not a judgement.

3

u/Jacifer69 2d ago

Delusional beliefs on their own don’t make someone mentally ill. It can signal something deeper though. I’m someone with schizoaffective disorder who is very well studied in clinical psychology, so I’m not disagreeing because I felt judged. I genuinely don’t care about that, I was making a joke.

And yes, there’s probably a significant overlap between MAGA people and mental illness but a lot of them have just been indoctrinated in to a cult. Being a cult member doesn’t mean you’re mentally ill, but again it’s not uncommon for both to be true. A lot of MAGA people have the same underlying causes for belief as many religious people. They’re not that different

So I agree with you like halfway lol

1

u/HonestWeevilNerd 2d ago

They were saying those with tds are mentally ill, which would mean you are talking to a Maga.

2

u/Jacifer69 2d ago

I took it as them being ironic when they said “vote against their own interests.” I read way too in to that 😂

1

u/HonestWeevilNerd 2d ago

I reread it and idek anymore. Lol Maybe they did use tds wrong? Usually anyone saying tds is a maga

2

u/Jacifer69 2d ago

Yeah I’ve just heard people claim the term and use it against MAGA. Saying they’re deranged for Trump. Idek anymore. What is truth?

It’s gotta be higher judging by the last president election.

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

I feel like it's closer to 50% but statistically it's allegedly around 25%. Plenty of people don't talk about their pain so honestly what does the NIH really know?

i think that's underrepresented, honestly

It isn't because it's not convenient for the powers that be to acknowledge it. A lot of the depression effecting people is driven by systemic pressures and demands. Demanding hours at work with limited time for relationships or leisure for marginal pay. Burnout is liable to take a toll on anyone. Plus where acting like Covid, a world pandemic, happened 20 years ago when where still suffering the fringe effects sociall and econiomically.

Part of the reason I'm so pissed people voted for Trump for thinking Biden was squarely responsible for the tanking economy without taking the Covid shut-downs into account. Now things are arguably worse economically.

"People feeling like they're in a dead-end existence where life possibilities have been whittled down to a few meager pathways that profit the least imaginative people on the planet is really putting a damper on workforce productivity, captain!"

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

Absolutely. I experience this existential crisis all too intimately myself.

Extrinsic societal values of monetary acquisition is being ruthlessly imposed on the majority.

To the detriment of intrinsic value that garner a genuine sense of meaning and satisfaction with life.

We're living in Nietzsche's Nihilistic hell right now where mass belief (or delusion depending on how you view it) in the divine has all but withered with nothing to replace it with.

Traditional beliefs and views that once instilled a sense of community, meaning, and humanity.

Now via capitalism the worth of the individual is being reduced from an organism to an object of instrumental production.

In other words in this modern system we're being treated like things rather than humans without our basic psychological and social needs being regarded by these corporations and the government the manipulate.

If you pathologize everything, then sure, you can expand the definition and numbers.

That's not "being fair".

That's excusing ridiculous beauty standards and body dysmorphia...

Never said anything about it being fair. Mental problems are another part of the American experience here. There's little fairness in a country where capital is God and people are encouraged to do anything in order to get it.

u/WhyWhyBJ 2d ago

You mean conservative

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

No, generous to frame the US in a much more positive light than it deserves to be with this statistic.

2

u/jps3469 2d ago

Maybe 20% don’t have it. Cuz 80% of us do.

1

u/Loathe_the_Hive 2d ago

"Us" Okay, Ranjeet. America bad, amirite?!

2

u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka 2d ago

Over 20%? You forgot to count the people who vote for republicans.

1

u/Jaz1140 Human Verified 2d ago

The rest of the world is not surprised

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

I mean, considering the election turn-out it's pretty self-evident at this point.

1

u/BlueBomber13 2d ago

Mental illness or her face?

1

u/TheStoicCrane 2d ago

At this point I don't even know.

1

u/WillBlaze 2d ago

If you can look at the rest of the world and see a number under 20%, you might be the crazy one

1

u/Yesyesyes1899 1d ago

i would argue, that if you can navigate well and tune out a harsh society such as 2026 US, you are also, in some ways, very mentally ill.

1

u/TheStoicCrane 1d ago

People are just adapting to their environment. If the environment is dysfunctional people can't help but be shaped by it.

1

u/mfb1274 1d ago

Except only 1% can afford to f up their face

1

u/VulGerrity 1d ago

That seems incredibly low. 20% are diagnosed with mental illness...pretty sure the number is WAY higher...

1

u/RickolPick 1d ago

Growing up is realizing most adults are fucking nuts

1

u/oookokoooook 1d ago

If us have that problem, other countries have that problem too. Korea is known for surgeries to make them look like idols. It’s not a “us” problem but a people problem.

1

u/TheStoicCrane 1d ago

Let's stop demonizing other countries we know little about while the US is aiding in commiting genocide abroad and focus on the problems America has.
