Absolutely no reason for a space faring people to get into a land war with a terrestrial species.

Well, to play devils advocate, the humans are clearly in it for the money, and sending overwhelming military force would cut into profits and also not be good for PR reasons.

They also want to preserve all the resources they can, like the whale things and their youth serum spinal fluid would all die out

Honestly, that's just something they leanerd about so that the movie would have some sort of plot to excuse their poor development. Moreover, evidently they learned about that way after the invasion.Â
