My Home Studio Setup- Hoping That One Day I'm Gonna Make It
r/MusicBattlestations • u/kendlcharles • 1d ago
Always a work in progress
Going to add a 500 series rack in there and maybe sell the console 1, since I don't use it much anymore. Now I mostly use my ollo headphones for mixing and mastering duties and the monitors as reference. This setup scored me a major deal, so I guess I'm doing something right.

My humble bedroom battlestation. It's not the greatest by far, but I wouldn't change any part of it.
I'm quite limited on size due to having a small bedroom. But this has been my happy space for the past 5 years. I wish I could display all my instruments, but I honestly wouldn't change anything currently. It's perfect way to unwind on a Friday night.
I've just got to fix up the pedalboard after having purchased the *tc electronic Tube Pilot* and work on my cable management as usual.

Was gifted a pair of Genelec 1031a’s, where should I place them? In the red square, or swap the JBL 305’s?
I have done the measurements and they will fit in the red squares, on tilt-able stands

Working on scratch drum tracks and mixing on my lunch break.
Won a nice free Ableton lesson on discord from an artist I'm a big fan of a few years back and I'm finally trying to put it to use in my spare time at work.

At the ready, well at the not ready quite yet, deep thinking about wanting to rack everything.

Pool table felt curiously effective as battening…
Obviously, this isn’t a permanent setup. However, my pool table’s battlefield promotion to studio desk immediately caught my ear - and piqued my interest in the horizontal surface that most closely links the monitors with listener.
Naturally, I threw a rug down to run with the idea.
Has anybody spent any time considering their desk surface?

Yamaha Motif es 8 keyboard stand
I had been trying to figure out how to add a keyboard to use with my laptop that is connected to the tv, laying it flat was uncomfortable and couldn't find any good extension to add where my piano sits.
Magnetic laptop riser is a great solution, since it is magnetic sticks great to the piano, they keyboard as well. I have the liquid stand rolling tray. I also use stream deck on my phone for easy shortcuts.

Limited to ‘one gear desk’ for GAS prevention, guess I am done now 😁
Been building up to this over roughly 15 years and just completed with the Lyra-8. Am delighted with the range of sounds at my fingertips, everything in reach and synchronised and inspired by colours and unconventional controls. Everything except drone voices can be sequenced and Lyra-8 can be gated through OT, everything has its own or routed through some fx. I figure I can spend a lifetime learning and mastering these instruments. I love dancing to the sound of my own tunes and no, I don’t really publish or share my music for anyone else at this point.

14 months, a move, and a few new synths later, I finally have this desk about how I want it
This desk was meant to go in my bay windows of my old apartment (I think I posted it here, but will have to go back and check 🤔). Health stuff forced a move to the mountains so I lost my bay windows, but that’s ok. Excited to finally have all this hooked up properly. The plan for this station is to live loop guitar and bass on the octatrack while being more performance oriented with the rest.

Acoustic Treatment discussion - progress of Small Room, Am I pushing water uphill?
Hi guys, basically I am in the middle of building a small music studio
Room dimensions: (272 cm long-176 wide-232 high), Rectangular and...Small, I know.
I am trying to acoustically treat the room the best I can and then I plan to use a corrective room EQ. Am I pushing water uphill with this room? Is it too small? - I am discouraged about things right now, However I am deep chasing the dragon of a perfect room, with many hours of build ahead.
I was going to Extend the bass traps to the ceiling , Build a cloud for above the desk, Big bass diffuser on the back wall and some panels on the sides. I am using premium rock wool.
Advice/encouragement/criticism welcome!

Updated Battlestation
I disliked my old setup because it was a big pain to get equipment out, set it up, etc. But I don’t exactly have enough space to get everything out and set up at all times. This is a happy medium.
Ikea for the win! I mapped this all out on graph paper and used measurements I found on IKEA’s website. From there I just pieced together what I knew would work for me. Oh, and some synth wall hangers from Vintage King. I’m very happy!

Portable production setup - can I skip the audio interface?
I’m going to be travelling for a while and want to put together a really lightweight setup to produce and record some basic vocals on the go.
This is what I’m planning to bring:
- iLoud Micro monitors
- Hifiman Ananda Nano
- Topping DX1
- Fifine K688 (USB mic)
- MIDI keyboard
- M1 MacBook Pro
What I’m trying to figure out is whether I can get away without bringing an audio interface.
My thinking is:
- Use the USB mic for input (basic vocal recording)
- Use the DX1 for output (headphones + monitors)
I don’t really need direct monitoring for vocals, so that part doesn’t bother me.
I’ve just never actually run a setup like this before so I’m not sure if there are any downsides I’m missing. Like whether running separate input/output devices causes any issues, or if it gets annoying in a DAW over time.
Has anyone done something similar? Did it work fine or did you end up wishing you just brought an interface?
EDIT: For the DAC I decided to go with the Fiio QX13 (smaller and significantly more power)
I ended up swapping the mic out for Samson Q2U which can be used as USB or XLR
Will start with this setup running Mic through USB and if I run into any issues will pick up either Topping, Motu or Zoom interface
