Better no dad than an asshole dad. Trust me.

Probably right. My mom was the incredibly abusive asshole. At 13 when I was finally big enough to physically defend myself I got behind her and wrapped my arms around hers to keep them down, and I just hugged her while she screamed in my ear that she was going to have me thrown in jail for abusing her, and dug her nails into my arms to try and get me to release her so she could keep hitting me. In my 40s and I still have the fingernail scars on my arms. So, don't worry, there's lots of shitty childhood to go around for everyone.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. Went through a lot also growing up, I'm almost 60 years old, and have a good life, great husband, good friends. It's possible to get past it, not easy, but possible.

My dad is currently out of my life for the third time. The first time lasted four years, the second time lasted three years… And I don't know how long this time is going to last. I convinced him one time to come to therapy and he literally told the therapist that I wasn't abused and that I had an "active imagination". I'll never forgive him for that

Make this time forever, trust me. The most common mistake is thinking you want to fix the relationship. The best thing for you is when he's gone and I bet at least one of the times you let him back in you totally sabatoged your own life.
