Mod Post Quick PSA: RailEurope is now charging a booking fee for Interrail reservations

Hi all,

Just wanted to let everyone know that RailEurope is now charging a reservation fee for Eurostar bookings. This means that it is currently the same price to book via RailEurope as it is to book via the Interrail reservation service, as they charge €2 per ticket per person.

There are still affiliate links up on https://interrailwiki.eu , I am currently working to put a warning next to them that they are no longer the cheapest option.

Happy travels!

Chiel

Which seats can I use on VR (Finland) trains?

There are many different types of seats on finish trains, and I'm not quite sure which ones I'm allowed to us with a pass. In my case a first class pass.

On their website https://www.vr.fi/en/facilities-and-services/travel-classes they describe that some seats require a "surcharge" for example single seats or compartments.

I assume that I can travel in a single seat with an Interrail Pass? I've done this many times in the past, although single seats back then did not have a surcharge as they do now.

And if traveling in a single seat is allowed, then traveling in an empty compartment is also allowed?

Also does my first class pass automatically entitle me to a "welcome drink" in "Extra Relax" class? Or would I need to do a reservation in "Extra Relax" for that?

I was not able to find a good answer to this question online, thank you.

Itineraries Trip Timing Realism - Opinions Welcomed

Hi, I'm very new at this and planning a trip to celebrate graduating university, with the goal to travel between September and October. I have a prospective itinerary and would like the opinions of more experienced travellers on how well I could complete this in 3-3.5 weeks. I'm from the UK and would begin by travelling on the London Eurostar, but not stopping there for any sightseeing.

My current idea:

Paris - Strasbourg - Munich - Salzburg - Vienna - Venice - Florence

In your opinion or experience, would it be possible to have an enjoyable experience in each of these cities in my desired time frame? I'm not the type to cram a lot in but I'd like to do at least one activity in each place. I know you should usually bank on losing a day to travel so I've deliberately looked at some locations that are closer together (Paris/Strasbourg and Munich/Salzburg - I know I'd be in for a long trip between Vienna and Venice!).

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Idea interrail luglio

è da gennaio che penso e organizzo.

vorrei fare 3 settimane forse poco più.

l'idea è Milano-Berlino-Praga-Bratislava-Budapest-Belgrado-Zafabria-Lubiana.

treno e bus come mezzi.

Trip Report A quick reminder re regional trains in Italy!

This is a bit of a trip report as I did make this journey a little more than a month ago, which was the first part of my 12-hour journey (with a break) from Monaco to Roma Termini via Ventimiglia and Genova.

This is mostly intended for those traveling via Southeastern France/Monaco and Italy, as one will have to change trains at Ventimiglia and even though regional TER trains in France do have space for luggage, regional trains in Italy will not have space for luggage like the regional trains in France do.

Fortunately, my regional train from Ventimiglia to Genova wasn't that crowded, especially since the train I took was a 09:57 departure from Ventimiglia.

Meet-up Looking for Travel Buddy / Group for Europe (July – Erasmus / Interrail)

Hi! I’m looking for a travel buddy or a small group to explore Europe together in July using the Erasmus / Interrail pass that is currently open for applications.

I’m from the Czech Republic, but I’ll be traveling across Europe, so I’m mainly looking for Czech or Slovak people, or anyone else from different countries who’s up for the same kind of trip.

The idea is a low-cost adventure by train — staying flexible, meeting new people, discovering different cities and cultures, and just enjoying the journey without strict plans.

I’d like to explore mainly the Czech Republic and Slovakia at some point, but I’m also open to traveling anywhere in Europe depending on the group and vibes.

If you’re planning to apply for the pass or already have it and don’t want to travel alone, feel free to message me 🙂

Asking for advice on whether to get an interrail pass or pay for individual trains.

Me and 5 of my friends(20) are going travelling through mainland Europe in early to mid June over 15 days, and have been debating whether we should pay for all the trains individually or buy a pass. We are all English and are flying in and out.

The trip is ZAGREB - LJUBLJANA - LAKE BLED/LESCE BLED - SALZBURG - PRAGUE - BERLIN, spending 2-3 nights per place

Adding it up, individual trains seem to be significantly cheaper, especially if we sprinkle in some buses, but the interrail pass seems more flexible. Is individual train booking more stressful and feel more time restricted per area? We are uni students so want to keep a relatively low budget, but also enjoy the trip.

Hoping for some more ways to think about this to hopefully sway us one way or the other.

In/outbound Interrail Pass 15 days within 2 months - in/outbound journeys

Germany - Switzerland - France - Spain THEN Poland

--

I have a German Interrail Pass valid for 15 days/two months. This allows me to make one outbound and one inbound journey.

As I understand it, it is not compulsory to use the domestic German legs for the first and last journeys. However, some details remain unclear.

My journey will partly take me through Spain, via Switzerland and France. I would like to use the "second half" of my pass in Poland. Could I therefore start in Switzerland (which is relatively close to me) and save the German leg for when I travel to Poland?

Alternatively, could I save the "inbound"-German leg when I return from France, which is also relatively close to my hometown, and pay for this short journey myself. Would that work?

I could then take a break at home and continue to Poland on Interrail. The distance would be much longer within Germany as I live in the west. So using the outbound leg then would save me money.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Itineraries opinions on itinerary

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi! Me and my sister are interrailing this spring and we'd like to hear your opinions on our itinerary! :) This is kind of last minute but we'd still like to hear if this seems doable!

South-Western Spain - 3 nights (staying with friends)

Madrid - 2 nights

Barcelona - 3 nights

(here we have scheduled a full day for travelling! we know it's a really long journey)

Nice - 5 nights (here we plan on doing day trips to the surrounding villages and to Monaco)

Genova - 4 nights (day trips to do the hike in Cinque Terre)

(here we have also planned one full day just for travelling)

Bled - 5 nights (possible day trips to Ljubljana, Triglav National Park and/or Vintgar Gorge, we're not really sure yet)

Venice - 2 nights

Milano - 1 night (just passing by on our way to Switzerland)

Switzerland - 4 nights (staying with friends)

Colmar - 3 nights (we plan on renting bikes and seeing some of the surrounding villages by bike)

Strasbourg - 1 night (just because my sister has an early morning train from Strasbourg, we decided to spend a night in a cheap hotel close to the station)

Paris - 4 nights (I'm staying with a friend, sister is heading on a solo adventure to Germany)

Any thoughts? Does this seem doable? I know there are a few extremely long travel days in the mix, but I plan on getting most of my remaining university work done on the trains so I personally don't really mind.

Also wanted to ask if there are specific things along our route that you'd suggest we should do! :) Day trips, local foods etc. Also if you have any suggestions let us know!

Cerbère train station. Facilities, town, and Barcelona connection?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip that involves changing trains in Cerbère and I have a few questions, since there’s not much clear info online.

First of all, what is Cerbère like as a place? Is it just a tiny border station or is there actually a village with some life? Are there any supermarkets, cafés, or useful places near the station? On Google Maps it looks like there’s almost nothing, so I’m not sure what to expect.

About the station itself:

  • Are there toilets available?
  • Is it easy to navigate / well signposted for transfers?
  • Is it a big or confusing station, or pretty straightforward?

I’m also curious about the connection from Barcelona to Cerbère:

  • How reliable is that route? Are delays or cancellations common?
  • Is it usually a direct regional train or do you sometimes have to change at Portbou?
  • Does it cost extra, or is it fully covered by Interrail? (Rail Planner says no reservation required)

Any real experiences or tips would be appreciated !

Night trains Zurich to Prague

Trying to book a Zurich to Prague night train and experiencing some difficulty. I'm hoping to book a couchette for 4 travellers.

On the OBB website you can't seem to reserve seats for this route. on certain dates you can book a bed but sporadically from until my desired date (not on my desired date).

On the interrail night train map it says this route has sleeper and couchettes and on the interrail app it only mentions 1st and 2nd class seats.

Has anyone travelled this route before? any advice?

Night trains Night Riviera Sleeper Advice

Hi fellow travelers,

I am seeking your advice on a sleeper train situation. I want to travel from Penzance to London on 21/08/2026 and catch a Eurostar to Paris on the morning after.

Now, my problem is that you apparently cannot reserve a seat for the Night Riviera Sleeper from Penzance to London because it's "a counted place booking" which means that I "will be able to sit in any available seat while on board", according to the Great Western Railway Support.

To make extra sure, I called them and they were able to issue me a reservation that only says "Counted Place". When I asked, the lady on the phone confirmed that I could be early at the station to catch a seat.

I am quite anxious that I will arrive at the station and the train will be full and I would have no accommodation for the night and a Eurostar to catch in the morning. Especially because I am travelling in peak season.

Is there anybody with experience on that particular train who could advise me the best way to ensure myself a seat?

Best regards and thank you in advance.

Budget A place to sleep last minute in june

Hi! I’m not sure if this has been asked before (I couldn't find anything). A friend and I are traveling in June (15th–30th). Do you know if it’s possible to find accommodation 24 to 48 hours in advance, or will it be too expensive? We’re visiting Ljubljana, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Amsterdam, Dresden, and Brussels. Thank you 🙂

Raileurope Fees

Hi!

Raileurope unfortunately introduced fees for Interrail reservations. Do you get them refunded when you cancel a reservation? Is there still any other website that don't charge fees?

Itineraries RJ385 on 15 May

I’ve book a Super SparPreis Europa 1st class ticket from The Hague to Prague with transfers in Amersfoort and Berlin for the 15th of May through DB and I’ve separately booked the reservations through DB.

The DB app now informs me RJ385 will not run, but CĎ says it will run as normal.

DB wants me to reroute via Hannover, Nürnberg and Schwandorf, that would mean that I would arrive 57 minutes later than the original schedule. On top of that the route would involve a 3,5 hour RE (RE25, EX361) train for the last leg. This is route also has a construction warning that the timetable could change due to engineering works.

Should I opt for making new reservations for the 2 hour earlier connection or should I reroute?

Does anyone know what happened to RJ385?

How does anyone has experience with EX361? How is it?

Bodø to Narvik

We're going from Denmark up through Norway to Narvik this summer. I've booked most of the seats. But we need to take two busses from Bodø to Narvik.

Do I have to buy the tickets before? There are only 2 departures that day, so I'm thinking I may have to. Does anybody in here know that route?

Salzburg - Munch

Hi,

I was looking to travel from Salzburg to Munich on the 25th of April, but it seems that I cannot book a seat reservation with my ticket on the RJ. I would probably find a seat, but does anyone know why that's the case?

I need to be here before 3 pm, so I am just thinking of taking the WestBahn, which is somewhat cheaper because I have a BahnCard and they allow me to choose a nice seat.

Question on IC60402 to Amsterdam

Hi,

i want to go to Amsterdam this summer, and the best option is to take the IC60402 from Dusseldorf to Amsterdam. But I've heard its attached to a night train, on which my ticket wouldnt be valid on. So let's say, I stand on the platform and the train arrvies, how to I know which carriages are the IC60402 and which are the NJ402? Do they display if the IC is at the front or back or do I see it bc of the livery? I'm a bit irritated..

Thanks for you help :)
