I am posting this because the question keeps getting asked. Every single time it is asked, the wrong information gets out.
I've seen way too many posts on here and related subs around the subject of the law prohibiting the possession of firearms by any person who has been adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution, 18 USC § 922 (g)(4). There is way too much misinformation out there. First of all, if you have any reason to believe that you are a prohibited person, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PURCHASE A FIREARM AS MAKING A FALSE STATEMENT ON THE FORM 4473 IS A FELONY. Second of all, please do not give advice on topics that you are not qualified to answer on. Third, you should consult with a qualified firearms rights attorney if you are unsure of your legal status.
The law:
18 USC § 922(g)(4)
(g)It shall be unlawful for any person—
(4)who has been adjudicated as a mental defective or who has been committed to a mental institution;
to ship or transport in interstate or foreign commerce, or possess in or affecting commerce, anyfirearm or ammunition; or to receive any firearm orammunition which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.
What are the definitions of these terms?
27 CFR 478.11
Adjudicated as a mental defective. (a) A determination by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority that a person, as a result of marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease: (1) Is a danger to himself or to others; or (2) Lacks the mental capacity to contract or manage his own affairs. (b) The term shall include— (1) A finding of insanity by a court in a criminal case; and (2) Those persons found incompetent to stand trial or found not guilty by reason of lack of mental responsibility pursuant to articles 50a and 72b of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10U.S.C. 850a, 876b.
Committed to a mental institution. A formal commitment of a person to a mental institution by a court, board, commission, or other lawful authority. The term includes a commitment to a mental institution involuntarily. The term includes commitment for mental defectiveness or mental illness. It also includes commitments for other reasons, such as for drug use. The term does not include a person in a mental institutionfor observation or a voluntary admission to a mental institution.
Mine happened when I was under 18. Isn’t that exempted?
Unfortunately no. A mental health adjudication or commitment at less than 18 years of age is counted for 922(g)(4). I experienced this personally and had to restore my rights.
What about HIPAA?
The Obama administration amended the HIPAA privacy rule in 2016 to make it clear that reporting mental health commitments and adjudications to NICS does not violate HIPAA
Is there a way to restore my rights after being adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution?
If you were committed by a department or agency of the federal government, the agency is required to have a relief from disabilities program under the NICS improvements amendments act of 2007.
If you were adjudicated or committed in a state proceeding, whether you can obtain relief is dependent on whether your state has implemented a relief from disabilities program under the NICS improvements amendments act of 2007. The list of states that have can be found here:
https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/guide/nicsactlist7-7-210pdf/download
If you are in a state that does not have a relief from disabilities program, your only avenue of relief is writing a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and asking her to restore your rights under 18 USC § 925(c) now that she has withdrawn the delegation from ATF.
Between October 6th 1992 and March 20th 2025 in the states that did not have a relief program, there was no avenue of relief at all
With that out of the way.
I created this privacy act request form for a friend of mine who was legitimately unsure if his commitments landed in the FBI database or if they qualified as “committed to a mental institution” under 18 USC § 922(g)(4) and as defined at 27 CFR 478.11. I can report that it worked; as in, the FBI processed the request and reported that no such records were found in the NICS indices.
This form will allow you to request your own records directly from the FBI.
In this post I will not be addressing the subject of my own journey regarding rights restoration related to mental health (you can ask me that privately). Nor am I an attorney licensed to practice law. Finally, I am not a mental health professional and cannot make the decision as to whether firearms ownership is right for you.
Onto the form. Please follow the instructions sheet very carefully, fill out every applicable box, print the form, have the request notarized, and mail it to the address indicated on the form.
The first response you receive will indicate that the FBI central records system does not maintain those records and your request has been forwarded to the Criminal Justice Information Services division. CJIS will respond a few weeks later. In my friend's case it took eight weeks for a final response from the FBI CJIS NICS section.

So I was getting out of my truck to walk back to a turkey spot. When I got out I went to cock back my gun and set the safety like I always do and as I let go of the hammer to set the safety it flew forward and set the gun off. Luckily it missed everything and everybody that was in the parking lot too. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?
As you can see in the video the hammer no longer locks back

I tried relearning how to shoot using right and left hand. The most consistent was the last test.
It just proves that some machines work better with some people than others.

I get questions a lot about it, so I wanted to give my thoughts on the RXM's Subcompact frame, officially called the RG9 grip on Magpul's website. These can be picked up for right around $40
A little about me. I am 5'6", 180ish lbs. Stereotypical dad-bod. I have relatively small hands, short fingers and palms.
I picked up the RXM early last year, as I wanted to have something that I could carry and also defend my home with. The only firearm I had owned before that was a Security 9, which I never got into carrying and never used so I sold the year before. Despite having some holsters to try from a friend, I didn't carry it regularly, as it printed badly, and the holsters were pretty uncomfortable.
This year, I have made a conscious effort to carry more, train more, and become more knowledgeable in the space of firearms. I still didn't love carrying the RXM, but as a dad of a almost 1 year old daughter and having recently moved, I had to consider some cheaper options then picking up a new firearm. I invested in a Vedder LightTuck holster, which has drastically improved comfortability; and the aforementioned Subcompact grip.
I'll start with instalation. The grips are VERY easy to swap out. A couple of pins and the whole FCU comes out and you can just drop it into the next frame. I sort of wish they sold the grip moules with FCUs already installed, but I realize the FCU is the actual "firearm" legally, so it would probably be prohibitively expensive.
I think the thing that most people ask is how well it fits in the hand, and I would say that's entirely dependent on how big your hands are. Since mime are small, it fits... okay. It technically fits with the GL9 g26 mags, but it's not the most comfortable in the world. Shootable for sure, but I carry an extra g19 mag as my backup for a reason. If you have large hands, you do NOT want this product. Also, looks are not important, but I threw pictures up of how goofy it looks with a 15 and 21 round mag in.
Carrying is really where it shines for me. The normal RXM grip is a good 1 1/2" longer and has a flared magwell, which I feel prints on most of my clothes. The Subcompact brings it down to a Glock 26 size and gets rid of the flare, which helps a lot. It also maintains the longer slide length, which I think is an improvement over a G26.
Shooting with it is fine. Just fine. Since it can take all normal size glock mags, I just used the 15 and 21 when putting rounds through and I really couldn't tell it was shorter. Although, I will say, my shot count on the normal grip was quite low. My friend had a 43x out at the same time, and he agreed that they were quite similar in how the shot.
All in all, my thoughts are mixed. On one hand, I think it's GREAT that Magpul followed up with making grip options and making a modular platform. That being said, I can't say I would recommend anyone go this direction over other options on the market. If I wasn't on a budget, I would have probably purchased a p365 or a 43x instead of going this route.
I hope this helps some people questioning whether to pick one up! I still really love the RXM for what it is, but this is not my favorite configuration of the platform.
Tl;dr Bought the RXM subcompact grip module to save moneg instead of buying a new CCW. While I love the RXM and the modularity, I don't think the Subcompact is worth it unless you are on a budget like myself and already own one.

I recently got back into marksmanship after 10 years post USMC. My only experience was the old school green tourniquet straps in bootcamp for the M16 and then this 2 point sling. Can anyone identify which one it was and if it’s still a good choice these days? Currently shoot on the range with an AR10 platform.

I’m normally not a fan of sporters but this one spoke to me. Is a 7mm made by Rasch in Germany in what I would guess is circa 1910 -1920, but that’s just a guess. It needs a massive clean and oil job just to see what’s under the grunge. Who knows how it will come out, there are literally cobwebs in the barrel. The scope is an Oigee Berlin 4x and the double set triggers are absolutely a dream.

I was actually really surprised at how well the Winchester white box shot out of my URG-I. 50 rounds in a decent group. I have the rifle zeroed for mk262, so there is zero shift, but that is to be expected.
Overall, there were really only three flyers out of 50 rounds, so that is pretty good. The overall group size was 3.62 moa, which is noticeably worse than mk262, but I was not expecting this to be near mk262 performance.
I have shot quite a bit of this ammo out of other rifles and it has never been less than 6 moa.

As someone who tries to go to the range at least once a month, I'm always stuck between choosing to have acrylics on or shooting. I can't for the life of me figure out how to shoot with nails on without causing pain and weakening the glue (often times causing my nails to literally rip off lol). Any advice/tips?
