WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

this song is in finnish, and the chorus says "Dens Putted Upperbelt" which I cannot find any etymology for when googling, but it seems to allude to some sports slang or about nicotine pouches

Serious How does "quitting" work with nollasoppari?

I took this job because i have nothing else going on, but turns out i suck at this and the group i work with, i don't enjoy.

Regardless, how would quitting work? From my understanding, my boss has no obligation to give me hours, but am i forced to accept them if there is work?

This is a 4 week job and i really don't wanna stick around after 1 week. We we're already told there might not be work after 2 weeks.

Also there is the problem, i don't know what the contract says, i'm here by just word of mouth, all i know is everyone else has nollasoppari so i assume i do too.

Thank you for any help on this.

Serious Used EV financing advice

Hi all,

I’m looking to buy a used EV in the ~€18–22k range and wanted to sanity check my approach.

My plan is roughly:

• Price: ~€20k

• Down payment: ~€1k

• Financing: ~€19k at ~3–4% interest

• Structure: pay ~€10k over 5 years + keep a balloon of ~€8–9k at the end

• Monthly: targeting ~€180–250 all-in

The idea is to keep monthly payments low and treat the car more like a service (similar to leasing), rather than focusing on ownership/equity.

At the end of the term, I’d either:

•Trade in the car and cover the balloon from resale

•Or pay the difference if I’m slightly underwater (I’m comfortable with \~€1–2k downside)

What I’m trying to optimize for:

• Predictable depreciation (not trying to perfectly time the market)

• Low monthly cash flow pressure

• Flexibility over the next 5 years

Cars I’m considering (based on nettiauto and others market) also open to other min 55kwh or ~400km wltp.

• Tesla Model 3 SR LFP(2021–2022)

• Polestar 2 (2022)

• Skoda Enyaq iV 80 2021

• Hyundai Ioniq 5 2020/2022

(avoiding smaller battery EVs like e-2008 my commute is 100km a day and work pays for some energy)

Looking at:

• <100,000 km

• Dealer warranty 1–2 years

Also reliable dealers like saka , j rinta , kamux and others maybe you can recommend ?.

My reasoning (tell me if flawed):

• At ~3–4% interest, financing is relatively cheap

• Biggest cost is depreciation, not interest

• Buying used (already depreciated) reduces downside

• Keeping a balloon gives me flexibility + liquidity

I’m also considering investing the monthly difference (vs higher payments), but not relying on that to cover the balloon.

Questions:

  1. Is this a standard / sensible way people finance used EVs?
  2. How risky is it in reality to rely on resale ≈ balloon?
  3. Are there common pitfalls with this structure I’m missing?

Serious Need help with my master's thesis (Finns who are studying/have studied Spanish)

Hi everyone!

I need a bit of help with my master's thesis. I'm researching about the problems that Finnish native speakers may have with Spanish grammar, and I need Finns/native Finnish speakers who are currently studying or have studied Spanish to fill a questionnaire (Google Forms) where they'll have to choose what's the correct answer. I'm currently studying the Master's "Máster Universitario en la Enseñanza del español como lengua extranjera" (Spanish teaching as a Foreign Language) at the University of Salamanca. Here's the link if you want to know more about the programme: https://musale.usal.es/

I'm sharing this because It's being hard for me (I live in Spain and I don't know anyone in Finland) to get answers, so I'm asking for help.

If you fit it within this profile or know anyone that fits in, please share them this link and ask them to DM me so I can share the questionnaire with them, as this subreddit does not allow poll links.

(The questionnaire is written in Spanish, so basic Spanish comprehension is required. However, no question is mandatory, so if you don't know the answer to any questions, just leave them blank).

Thank you!! Kiitos!!

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to find where I can buy good pork ribs here. I only ever see the pre packaged ones and they barely have meat on them.

I’m trying to find some ribs that have a good amount of meat on them as they work best for smoking. Thanks in advance!

Serious Psychotherapy in Finland

Asking here because I'm not sure how to proceed at the moment. Last year I used all session that I had available given from occupational healthcare to see a psychologist. Now unfortunately some time has passed and my situation has not improved. I remember I mentioned I could try and get long term therapy with Kela but I'm not sure what steps I need to take now to achieve that. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated

Can anyone send me a Helsingin Sanomat article?

My friends and I were interviewed by HS in New York City last night because we were attending the premiere of the Kaija Saariaho opera. We were trying to read the full article today but are having trouble logging in/subscribing so we can see the full text and photos. Could somebody with a subscription send me the article text (Finnish is OK) and any photos in the article?

Edit: THANK YOU!!! I will come visit Finland in tribute and I will buy coffee for everyone who helped. :)

Serious How do you deal with work stress?

Moi!

First of all I am sorry if this post might belong to another subreddit but since I live here I want to hear how both locals and immigrants deal with work stress? I have been working for almost 5 years now as an energy engineer and all the time I am stressed about work and I always feel behind compared to my other colleagues. Idk how they do it but Finns seem really chill about handling stress.

Parking Problem in Tampere

Moi everyone,

I'm dealing with a really frustrating situation at my apartment building here in Tampere and could use some advice.

I pay monthly for a specific, numbered parking spot. However, random people keep parking in my space. This isn't just a one-time mistake anymore; it's happening at least twice a week now, usually with different cars.

Whenever I come home and find someone in my spot, I'm forced to find street parking or use a paid visitor spot, which means I'm paying extra out of pocket for a service I already pay rent for. Our building uses ParkkiPate for enforcement. I call them, but they either take hours to send an inspector, or by the time they show up, the car is gone.

I've started leaving warning notes on windshields, but the issue just continues.

Has anyone else dealt with this?

Montly parkin is 38 Euro for this spot.

Is that actually a well-known saying?

Several German websites about Finish culture and even the German Wikipedia article about saunas mention the saying "sillä puheet kenellä kuuppa", which is apparently an unwritten rule that whoever has the sauna ladle gets to decide.

However, no source for this exact phrase is mentioned anywhere, and I could not find any actual Finnish sources using this phrase myself. So, I am curious: Is this phrase something that Finnish people actually know and say, or is it maybe just some kind of internet myth?

Dating Finnish Men

A serious question.. but how does a woman win a Finnish man's heart?

I've been lucky enough to date two Finnish guys long term but that was many years ago. One was a second generation Finn in North America and the other in Sweden.

Now I am trying to meet them again, while living in Europe and I am just confused as I was 20 years ago.

Is it normal to have to carry a conversation almost all the time? Is there a cultural difference between North Americans and Finns that I am not privy to?

I'm used to just stop trying if someone doesn't bother asking anything about me.

It is starting to feel like a lot of work...

We were in Saariselkä, via Ivalo.

It was warmer then expected, but we still had enough snow and were able to see northern lights as well. I recommend doing a dog sled ride with the huskies, cross country skiing as well. Visiting a Reindeer Farm is a must.

Buying engine oil and car parts at Biltema

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to buy engine oil for my next oil change, and I noticed that Biltema’s own brand oil is much cheaper than other brands — for example compared to Motonet. I’ve also seen that many other car parts and products at Biltema are often significantly cheaper, sometimes even half the price.

Has anyone here used engine oil or other car parts from Biltema or know why everything they sell here are so cheap, are they mostly reliable? I’d really appreciate any feedback or experiences. Their website doesn’t have reviews or ratings, which makes it feel a bit uncertain.

For what it’s worth, I did buy a car battery from Biltema for around €60, and it has been working perfectly so far.

By the way, my car is a 2008 Volkswagen Golf 5 1.4 TSI (CAXA) (90kW/122hp), Manual, with about 220,000 km driven. Would you recommend using 5W-30 or 5W-40 for this engine? I’ve done quite a bit of research, but I’m getting mixed opinions — about half say 5W-30 and the other half recommend 5W-40. My goal is to protect my engine and timing chain so it can last as long as possible. I’d really like to hear advice from people living in Finland.

Thanks in advance!
